Great night!
I just arrived in Toronto last night for a new job that started today. After I got home from work I got word that The Hip were playing in Kensington Market. I rushed down there and found myself watching them play in a little bar. The first time I saw them (my first concert ever in 1996), I was in the very back row of a stadium. It was pretty cool to see them all these years later at such a small place. Might try to go see them again tomorrow!0 -
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Goddamn, I hope someone is capturing the audio from this. Absolutely EPIC version of Grace, Too."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. Damn, didn't get in tonight.
I see that Jack White is playing the next two nights, RNDM is coming to soon, The Wallflowers are playing this month, and Social Distortion is coming up soon as well. I think I need to be careful not to go broke... bit of a different town than Ottawa0 -

Agreed. Hands down the best thing they've done since Music@Work in my opinion. Even the songs I wasn't too keen on at first have grown on me (About this Map, Done and Done). It's just brilliant from start to finish, and it's quickly becoming my favorite album of 2012. I can't get enough.
Oh, and remember that kick-ass version of Hundredth Meridian I posted earlier in this thread? Well this one is even better:

I picked up the vinyl as well. I need to have both: CD for the car, and vinyl for home."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. Amazing interview with Gord Downie on CBC the other day. Never seen him so candid and personal before, especially when discussing his private life, which he rarely does. Turns out his wife had a scary bout with breast cancer as the band was in the middle of making the new album, which ended up inspiring some of the lyrics on the new songs (Transformation, The Lookahead, Man Machine Poem in particular). It certainly puts things in perspective and gives even more emotional weight to these songs:

saw Bobcaygeon yesterday. Good watch, not great. I wish there was more intimate stuff with the band....
I really dont like when Gord YELLS grace too as opposed to singing it.
here is a QandA with filmaker Andy Keen after our viewing.
Some questions may not make sense without seeing the movie.

1st: Now for Plan A is EXCELLENT!!!!
2nd: Ironically... I keep seeing and hearing reviews that are like "best Hip since Phantom Power... or best Hip since Music @ Work" My affinity and love for We Are The Same cannot allow this.
But... N4PA is probably one of their most 'beautiful' albums. The arrangements, the lyrics, and Sarah Harmer... beautiful.
I've listened to it almost twenty times now since it came out..... gets better every spin.Toronto 2000

Here's Downie's full interview from the George Strombo show tonight. Much funnier and more light-hearted than the one he did last week:

So.... who bought hip tickets today???
My brother has been on my case to come visit him for the last 2 years while he's been working on his law degree at DAL... Got the email about the Canadian tour and said "this looks like a fantastic excuse to go to Hali!".
got 4 gold circle seats to the metro center show this morning in the presale... already psyched!Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.0 -
Sadly this will be the first Hip tour since 1991 that I won't be able to see. For some bizarre reason they've decided to skip Calgary on this tour, and I don't have the funds or the vacation time to venture down south for the U.S. tour. It's a real bummer.
That being said, I can't stop listening to the new record. Nobody expects a masterpiece from a band who has been around as long as the Hip have. But a late-career masterpiece is exactly what they've made. This is the best album of 2012 in my opinion...and the best thing these guys have done in 10 years. The amount of heart and soul they've poured into this album is inspiring to me. This is a band that clearly cares about their craft, and I love that they continue to throw us a few curve balls and push themselves forward artistically after almost 30 years in the biz. Long may they run!"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. I'm not all that fond of the new one. I've listened to it a couple times, and nothing grabs me.
But he comes across in interviews as incredibly intelligent and enormously humble.Gimli 1993
