Kids that don't have the same opportunities / circumstances as we do.
I agree...so lets work together to help them achieve...I'm all for help others as some day they may help me...
you agree, right...?
sure do...
But is giving money or GPA really helping their cause? It may temporarily but we need life long solutions not band-aids.
Is giving money help there cause...? yes...
the GPA thing is stupid and you know it...
listen, I get it, you don't want a few dollars of you tax money to go to social programs...you'd rather use that few bucks to buy some cola and snacks, fine...but you offer no alternative other than "I don't want my hard earned tax dollars to go to anyone but me"...
come up with a viable solution and let us know....
and i am telling you that GPA in most cases is irrelevent to finding a job, and is not a good predictor of a successful career or salary.
and i wil find your posts in question,. i have the time.
Your telling me that your H.S. GPA is irrelevent to getting into a good college or college in general. So are you saying its irrelevent to an employer if 1.canidate when to college 2. canidate did not attend college?
You said your in the medical field right? WOuld you hire someone for your job with a degee in that field or a H.S. diploma?
my high school gpa helped me get into a good school yes, but i thought you were talking about college gpa and gaining employment, as in a career... in that case i had a shitty college gpa (3.2). i loved to party in college and it did not interfere with my clinical rotations, but i did not apply myself as much as i should have. in my line of work you do not learn as much in the classroom as you do in your hands on practicals. my gpa sucked but it was good enough to earn me a graduate assistant position that paid for my grad school where i had a 3.9 and earned my master's. to get into grad school i had to pass a national certification exam that has about a 25% pass rate on the first attempt. i passed it on the first try. i'm a smart guy and my college gpa admittedly does not reflect my intelligence or my expertice in my chose field.
when i got my first job out of grad school my gpa was not a determining factor. my resume and clinical real world experience to that point was enough. not to mention my people and interview skills were a good thing that i had in my favor. when i left that job and took my current one it was not my gpa or what i knew but who i knew and connections i had made. the point is that gpa is NOT a deciding factor in gaining or maintaining employment.
and to answer your question, as long as someone passes the certification exam and has their degrees and has a state license for the state they will be working in they are eligible to do my job. nobody with just a high school diploma could legally function in my job.

How does giving someone money help their cause if they are never educated on how to use it?
The GPA thing is not stupid, its to merely how stupid the view of forcing someone to give something that they have earned that will help them/family in life. You are essentially taking away money from other peoples mouths.to feed people that don't offer anything to them.
And its not a few dollars...
I have offered plenty of alternatives, alot of them very logical such as the community service thread. Just because you don't accept them does not mean I don't offer them.

You would have never had the opportunity to do clinical real world experience without your degree/college/H.S. GPA. And just because the GPA was not a determining facor for YOU does not mean its like that everywhere.
Why are you against residtributing H.S. gpa, that is where kids fail the most, especially inner city public schools. They don't have the time to study, because they have to support their family. Why do you not take that into consideration yet you do with wealth (taxes)?

i should have clarified. in undergrad i had to have 1800 hours of clinicals in order to even sit for my national certification exam and had to have over 2000 for me to graduate from my program. so my high school gpa had nothing to do with that beyond getting me into the school.
i am not in favor of giving away gpa points because it is a stupid concept. this is why we grade on a curve in classes where kids are failing....

so is the alternative of letting people starve or languish in poverty the better choice?
No the alternative is putting that money into programs that will help the children. A welfare mom is not helping her family by continually have more children with no dad(s) So since the Gov. is already basically raising the children anyways we should create programs (afterschool) that can better their lives, and educate them on real world issues. Also use a voucher only systems, where they are not given money, but vouchers on basic needs and certin food items. Create a system to stop the selling the food stams for drugs or money. Its as simple as showing an id for the food you purchase on vouchers. That wouldn't even cost any money. I could come up with a million examples that would help these people. But cutting a check and turning a blind eye to the abuse is not helping.
I haven't read the whole thread (sorry, had to skim) but I'm thinking about how wealth has already been redistributed. Now how does it get redistributed in the other direction? Is that a valid question? There's so much disparity and it's getting worse all the time and harder to live. How is that fixed? GPA won't fix it. The word "power" comes to mind...who has the power? Who had the power to make it so lop-sided now?
I won't have time to keep posting but I just wanted to express a few thoughts on this topic.

Good points here too... Maybe those in power should stop wasting billions (or is it trillions now?) on senseless wars, and use it to hire some better teachers or guidance counselors to motivate the kids who have low GPAs.

How is it a stupid concept, Its giving kids a future who don't have a chance in their current situation. Right? Isn't they why I pay taxes to support welfare?
So again it comes back to GPA, would you have gotten that college with a shitty GPA? Maybe a different college yes but you can't say you would have had the same results at a lower tier college. I go my CIvil Engineering degree from UK, which is a great program UK has, is it as good as Purdue's?, No... And that would make a very big decision in an interview in my current field. Is a UK engineering degree better than one from Phoenix online, or DeVry, or Morehead State, yes it is and that would also play a huge factor to my employer.

Nope. (maybe just pay them better)
agree, but that is still not going to make kids care any more. If education is not taken serious home then the kids will only follow suit.
You can't MAKE people learn, they have to want to.
The lesser, will, and always will, need assistance from the greater. Is it fair? I don't know? Capable people may have more burden and expectations placed upon them but in the end they also probably live better lives. Tough shit, either way. I learned that in elementary school.
Great, Ill just be a shitty parent, will not teach my kid any sense of responsibiliy and expect everybody that work hard for their families and society to pay for and take care of my children.
I wish someone would have told me sooner that its people who are responsible to make sure everyone else who chooses not to is taken care of.
This is what we have charitys for. People should not be forced to take care of anybody.
I understand your point. It violates your personal freedoms to be forced to pay into a system that you don't agree with, at least in part. There is no such thing as 100% personal freedom in any society, though. We always trade some personal freedoms when we live together and seek to do things for the common good. Complete personal liberty ends as soon as the first law is made. So you want to draw the line in one place and others want to draw it in another. There will surely be abusers in every system but the best we can do is not be the parents you described above and instead promote compassion and understanding as well as personal responsibility.

and for the record, high school gpa is not the only thing that determines your ability to get into a college.
act, or sat, standardized testing anyone???
or a daddy with a big wallet...
How is inheritance of wealth any less noble than inheritance of genetics? Why don't you go hate on the guy who got good genes while your at it as well. All they did was be born and they got all those good genes!
As far as it goes, the free market gives people the best chance to succeed monetarily than any other system. If people had all their money redistributed, what incentive would there be to create more wealth?

yeah but my dad could not afford to donate a new building or anything...
i just finished paying back my loans in 2010...
should we redistribute our ACT scores?
how about give people bigger loans so they can go to the school of their choice?
If your not for GPA/ ACT / SAT being distributed then how can you be for money people work for? How is that logical. Money/GPA/ACT, ect all help people better their lives and achieve success. SO why only go after the money?

why must i be for one and if i am not for one then i am automatically for the other?
i am not against giving money because that is part of the society that you live in. if you don't want to pay for other people then don't pay your taxes, and see if you end up in prison. that is what society has agreed on. we take care of other people here. some like me don't mind it, and a few who think like you piss and moan and carry on and on about something that they can't change. i would like to see you as a 70 year old man and need to have an operation that requires medicare reimbursement like a hip replacement. i would be willing to bet that you would gladly accept that rather than pay for it out of pocket. because, i mean, why should you have to pay for it when others will, right?
i have tired of the worn out $ and gpa analogy. you have your opinion, i have mine.

I don't particularly care for the analogy, but how about looking at it a little differently...what you call income redistribution is a progressive tax system...I understand the frustration with it, personally I would rather see a loop hole/subsidy-less system that is a simple flat tax, but either way those tax dollars pay for programs that are trying (misguided or not isn't the question here) to make the united states a better place to live for everyone. They aren't meant specifically to give income from one person to another simply to do it...while that is what you may perceive is happening, I can tell you from experience that isn't looking at the whole story. if you disagree with how a program is implemented what is your solution? personally I think that a revamp of the welfare system is in order with more focus on job training.

Because the reasons you give me for not wanting your GPA / ACT/ whatever redistributed is the same reason I give you for not wanting my Pay check redistributed, but for some reason its a problem (selfish, don't care about the poor) for me to have that stance. I am just pointing out your and everyone on this boards hypocrisy.
