it amazes me everytime I read somewhere of a place being 'right in George Bush Territory', sounds like there are still folk in the world who can still handle him.....just seems bizarre, given the amount of times hes made a proper cock of himself.....

maybe the politics are bigger than the man

I was there and I thought Eddie was trying really hard to not be overt in his views. At least he was for Eddie. He even said "I am trying to keep it clean".

With that being said there was a great big good old boy in the pit area that said "you can leave" when Eddie started talking about the gas prices before Gone. It reminded me of the Chili Peppers "hicks don't mix with politics".

I dont want Obama to win but if he does at least Eddie wont be able to bitch about the preisdent anymore. I am so tired of his political rants. We get it, you didnt like Bush 1, you didnt like Clinton, you dont like GW Bush. It has been almost 20 years of bitching about the president, it will be nice if the guy he wanted is in office so I wont have to listen to his disgust with the adminstration for awhile.

That being said, McCain will win, so I guess I will have to listen to Eddie "political genious" for another 4 years at least.

I kinda find it intriguing listening to Eddie all the time, obviosuly its a personal thing, but I like it....let him vent off, he's earned it.....

Bush is a tit, but from afar I though Clinton was great and surprised Ed wasnt more into that....

So is this McCain gonna be a better bet ?

Ed isn't usually into any of the mainstream candidates because they are all in the pockets of corporations.

He is for Obama this time either A) Because he's been duped into thinking Obama is the non-corporate candidate or B) Because Obama is not Bush.

Even if Obama is elected, I can guarantee Ed will be bitching about him on the 2010 tour. I don't even mean this in a negative way. In our country, to get elected president, you have to make a whole bunch of promises you have no intention of keeping.

Can you imagine Bono and Ed playing together? It'd be half-politics, half-music, but at least Bono has his heart in the right place when talking about Darfur, etc.

Very good post! I don't think that all of the people that are head over heels about Obama really realize that he is a politician and he will make false promises just like everyone else.

I think to be a "true all-around" fan of this band, you have to be into politics. I'm not saying you have to be into Pearl Jams politics, but politics in general. They affect so much of what they feel, write, perform, etc. I hear people bitch about how they are tired of Ed's rants. Well I'm fuckin tired of hearing about how tired people are of rants. This band has been openly political ever since Ed scribbled pro-choice on his arm during MTV Unplugged. If you don't like to talk politics, find a new favorite band. It is part of the experience, has been for 17 years. You know what to expect, deal with it. The safest place to be if you want to avoid politics is not at a Pearl Jam concert.

By the way, this goes out to everyone, Liberals, Conservatives, Communists, etc.

Oh, Cigarettes cost less then gas. Fuck driving, start smoking. The folks at FOX seem to think that 2009 will be the end of the world anyway. ;)

I am, in general, a conservative, Republican-leaning dude ... and I have to say, I've never been made to feel uncomfortable or offended at a Pearl Jam show. Ed says what he wants to say, I either agree or (often) disagree, and we move on.

And maybe it just has to do with the relationship I have with this band. I grew up with this band. I've "known" them for 15 years or so. I have a relationship with this music that has grown with me from adolescence to adulthood. So when Ed says something I disagree with, I just look at it as Crazy Uncle Eddie being Crazy Uncle Eddie.

Maybe that's just a sick way of rationalizing it, I don't know.

I think if you completely disagree with the politics, or have no interest in the at all and still spend all kinds of money going to multiple shows, you are atrue fan. Just because I dont feel like listening to somebody's political view doesnt mean I dont enjoy the music.

I am just saying if Obama is elected maybe we will get a break from the politics at shows for a tour or two. And if we dont, I will still go to shows and have fun.

No, your right. This post was not in any means pointed at you. It's the pricks who have to start yelling shit or booing that this is for. It's just appreciating all around what the band is about. No agreeing, appreciating.

On a different note related to the article, I'm posting this review that was in a different thread. I think it really captures the mood there and is a tremendous post. Seems like the best PJ show in a very long time.

Still shaking out the cob webs after what was a really long night but here's some details. So this is my 3rd Bonnaroo and having Pearl Jam there was like having two of my best friends meet for the first time and loving each other. Got up there about 3/4 of the way through BB King's set and started jockeying for position as the anticipation was really starting to build. Jack Johnson came out to an incredibly warm reception and played a killer set. He said at one point "are you guys as excited as I am to see Pearl Jam?" He then brought out Eddie to play a Jack song (Constellations I think). That was an exciting moment because it was our first glimpse of Eddie.

The stage set up is really cool with a big screen behind them with a wave mural and then two big PJ banners on each side of the stage. The lights go out and everyone goes nuts. Hard to Imagine was a great opener and he had the crowd singing instantly. If there was any question that this crowd belonged to PJ it was answered right then. Courdoroy was awesome and then All Night threw some people off but still sounded awesome. Who You Are is a song I've been waiting to hear for a long time. In preparation for this show I hadn't checked the setlists from the previous nights but someone had mentioned they played Who You Are so I had a feeling it was coming. They've reworked the drum intro and they nailed it, absolutely beautiful.

Half Full ripped, Mike did a blistering solo. Before Gone Eddie says that on January 8th, 2001 when Bush took office that gas was 1.56 a gallon and now it's 4.50. He said he wrote this next song when it was at about 2.75 and played Gone. Just mentioning Bush got mixed response from the crowd. Not like the San Francisco crowds I'm used to. Love Reign O'er Me was really solid, Eddie really put it down on this one.

During the first encore the camera man zoomed in on the setlist so we knew what was coming. I saw No More coming up and wondered how it would go with the crowd. Eddie comes out and says "we were talking backstage and you guys really remind us of a crowd at a festival in Amsterdam. All I need now is for you to tell me to go fuck myself in Dutch, Don't worry you'll get your chance in a bit" a reference to No More? I don't know. WMA sounded really, really good. Reworked just enough and it extended out nicely.

For the 2nd Encore he came out alone and told the story of the guy from Body of War. He recently slipped into a coma and Eddie was obviously affected by it, in fact he seemed to be battling a lot of emotion all night. He said I know there's a time and a place to talk about this stuff but I'm pissed!!! He then talked about how the 80,000 people here have the power to change the world. The crowd came around for No More and really made it a nice sing along. Eddie said that if we sang along he'd said Thomas the tape. I had seen Release on the setlist and thought it was really odd to be played so late. Eddie talked about how their friend had lost their Father the day before and he was going to play this for him. The most amazing Release ever with Eddie crying throughout.

To backtrack a second suring the 2nd encore break the crowd starting singing Alive on it's own, in fact it sounded like the whole crowd was signing it so Alive was a big hit when they played not to mention that I think Eddie was into bottle of wine number 3 by that point. Yellow Ledbetter and Indifference were on the setlist as the closers but they must have changed it up and went with Watchtower.

All in all the most amazing PJ show I have been to. I was proud to be a PJ fan. The band really, really brought it and I have a feeling will go down in Bonnaroo history as one of their best headliner ever, hands down the best in my book. Sorry for the long review but last night's show was a marathon, not to mention Kanye West finally coming onstage at 4:30 in the morning and playing until the sun came up. Bonnaroo is nuts, absolutely nuts!!!

Not true.. I used to be pretty conservative when I was a in high school when I really got into the band.. I'm pretty liberal now in my late 20s and it has made no impact to the musics effect on me.. and no, the band did not convert me.

I said you didn't have to agree with their politics. You just have to be in to politics in general. I mean, I guess it's possible just to like the music, but people may look at you funny if you listen to Neo-Nazi tunes just because you dig the beat.:)

For us on this forum I'd say it would have been All Night or WMA.
