    Correct.

You ALWAYS do what ever is in the brackets first. Then the other calculation. If there is no symbal between the numbers and the bracket that means you multiple the first part (48/2) with the second (9+3)

    oh shut up~~

and i mean that in the nicest possible way

  • I'm pretty sure that a number attached to the brackets gives that priority in the math problem.

    So, first its the brackets.

    9+3=12

THEN its what is attached to the brackets because they are a happy little number family.

    2x12=24

THEN the rest of the problem.

    48/24=2

You DON'T break up the happy little number family.

No you're wrong. It's 288. I've been doing maths the past 2 semesters, trust me

If any one gets stuck, get a scientific calculator and type the equation in as 48/2(9+3)= and it will give you 288.

3 pages arguing about a math problem?

True! There are much more important things to discuss, such as Dancing with the Stars, and Dez Bryant's antics.

    Stuff that really matters.

hate dancing and have never watched it and who the f' is Dez Bryant?

there is a difference between 'brackets' and 'parenthesis'...sometimes both are used in the same query.

  • really guys? Not to sound all pretentious and shit... but I figured this out in the 3 seconds it took to open up the thread after I read the topic. I just saw 24*12 when I saw the thread and wondered what the reference to the number 288 was.

I'll guess "a" only because I think you're supposed to do the operation inside the ( ) first. But, of course, I could be wrong. :?

Btw, I got 2 as the answer, thats how we were taught here. Do the brackets part first, and take it from there.

When operations are of equal precedence, as are multiplication and division, you go left to right which is why you divide 48 by 2 first and multiplying the result of that by the result within the bracket, rather than dividing 48 by the result of 2*(9+3).

If you wanted to express 2 by a variation of the above, you'd need to express it as: 48÷(2*(9+3)) to avoid ambiguity.
