but holy fucking hell
these are the fucking acts of man
damn

i got through about the first seven and had to stop

During the first five months of last year, a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan went on a shooting spree, killing at least four unarmed civilians and mutilating several of the corpses. The “kill team” – members of the 5th Stryker Brigade stationed near Kandahar – took scores of photos chronicling their kills and their time in Afghanistan. Even before the war crimes became public, the Pentagon went to extraordinary measures to suppress the photos, launching a massive effort to find every file and pull the pictures out of circulation before they could touch off a scandal on the scale of Abu Ghraib.

The images – more than 150 of which have been obtained by Rolling Stone – portray a front-line culture among U.S. troops in which killing innocent civilians is seen as a cause for celebration. “Most people within the unit disliked the Afghan people,” one of the soldiers told Army investigators. “Everyone would say they’re savages.”

Pic 4 & 5 are of a boy of maybe 16. I cried looking at these, especially reading the captions about throwing candy to children then shooting them. The last 2 pics are the most horrific pictures I have ever seen.... these monsters deserve watching this happen to each other.

In no way is there a defense to this, except to say perhaps all of our deployed men and women in uniform have been gone long enough. The brass have their responsiblity in this too. Utterly shameful and disgraceful to those who do what is right. And to those who served with honor while losing their lives.

I saw this earlier, and I don't think I've ever wished the death penalty on individuals as much as I do these animals. Actually, calling them animals is an insult to every animal on Earth. Words do not describe these bastards. Not only did they commit senseless, brutal murder to innocent civilians, they've also condemned honorable, good soldiers to death and ridicule. They should turn these shit piles over to the Afghan people and let them dole out the punishment.

Thank you for posting this link. I think it is important. From all I've seen, the military does a fine job at dehumanizing and does little to discourage racism and the like within its ranks during conflicts like this. I'm certainly ashamed to know we have soldiers carrying out these atrocities and I hate to say it, but it looks like many of the victims of 911 died more humanely than what is being shown here. It should cause all of us to pause and consider the state of things. My heart goes out to the victims and their relatives. Simply inexcusable.

    absoultely appalling...
pics 17 and 18 are the worst, then again the kids posing with these bastards is just as disturbing to me...

this kind of shit is why the rest of the world hates us. it is another example of the utter disregard for human rights that some people in our military has shown to those in the arab world. it is one scandal after another and it is a complete lack of leadership. the commanding officers in these units are responsible for the conduct of their soldiers, and in this case there was nobody held to account for any of this.

a few good men? yeah right. a few assholes is all it takes to undermine whatever good things our soldiers are doing. in actuality this proves to me that we are doing more harm than good. it is photos and scandals like these that remind me why i decided to not be all i can be...

this should be required viewing for all people being recruited for the armed forces.

A lot of this goes on. There are many written accounts of these types of incidents, but most of them don't take pictures and/or film (or let them get out)

There are videos of soldiers driving down the street shooting up people and cars for a good time.

It happens enough to where IMO it is more widespread then just a few bad apples.

They will go after Bradley Manning more than these actual killers.

Sadly this reflects on those that are trying to do a good job and will cause even more nations to hate America. I hope those responsible are locked away and never experience freedom again. Disgusting!

jeff remember "THE ACTS OF MAN"?
this is what i was writing about
left out in the desert too long (or the jungle, or where ever)
    and like will find like
and these atrocities are the outcome

and sadly, any good done by our military is stained with the blood of these innocents

i blame the buck-passing trio of bush-cheney-rumsfeld for abu ghraib

where do i lay this blame?

I can't believe that fucker Morlock only got 24 years ... he should get a .40 caliber shell to the temple.

This platoon is a disgrace to the armed forces and more importantly, a disgrace to the human race. They dishonor my friends that have risked their lives fighting over there.

If the article is true in its depiction, the military has some severe issues to address. Commanding officers that were guilty of dismissing initial reports and not fully investigating suspicious deaths are partly responsible for allowing a small group to fester into an open lack of humanity. I feel horrible for those soldiers in the platoon that did not have an upper chain of command that took their concerns seriously and a group of peers that would beat them for talking. They must have felt like they were in an insane nightmare.

this is symbolic of the entire system and culture ... it didn't start in afghanistan or iraq ... it started at home ... it started with the lack of education ... and it was finished when you put young kids into extremely stressful and immoral situations ...

before we cast these "killers" into some bottomless pit ... we need to look ourselves in the mirror and ask how we contributed to the killings of innocent people ... if you think you aren't partially to blame - you are sadly mistaken ...

Education has nothing to do with being a sociopath, and based on their actions that is clearly what these sick bastards are.

Only a few right? and what is the rest of the army doing? oh yes, taking part in brutal occupations for American Imperialism, is that any better? They all guilty, we are all guilty.

I understand how hard it must be for soldiers, but at the end of the day, they are doing wrong by being in Iraq/Afghanistan, and when people say "They are just following orders", that does very little to sway me, if anything that just shows the sheep mentality. It is really really sad.

I thought this topic might escalate quickly to the point that the entire military is responsible for the murders, but I didn't think it would get to the point that my cat and I should be feeling guilty for our role as well.

because we support this system of exploitation ... a system that has been manipulated by the greedy and powerful ... when you buy gas for your car - it feeds an entity that funds militias and paramilitaries throughout the world to maintain an economic order ... places like Afghanistan became the way they are because we blindly allow our "leaders" to make foreign policy decisions that support dictatorships and oppressive regimes ...

when you pay taxes ... some of that money goes to funding coups and civil unrest in developing countries so that they may be exploited for the goods ...

education is part of it ... it's not everything ... but it's part of it ... the reality is that US foreign policy over the last several decades should make every American ashamed ... yet, most are oblivious to this ... scoring below the OECD averages for developed countries in basic education metrics is part of this I believe ...

I like to think of my tax dollars going to support NASA and local schools, but what do you suggest? I'd stop paying taxes but I've learned from Wesley Snipes that it's probably not the best idea in the world. If I move to another country, I'm sure that they would want a cut as well. And my parents would probably reject the idea of letting me live in their basement rent free, so I'm in a pickle.

When I buy gas for my car, I can't be 100% certain that the money is funding militias overseas, but I am 100% certain that it is providing a paycheck for the person behind the counter (not that I want to fund their paycheck).

As for being sheep and blindly following our leaders, I had no better chance of getting Dubya on the blower back in 2001 to call off the Iraq invasion then I did sending a text message to Obama to call off the missile strike in Libya. Unless you don't have an income and live off the land (illegally), I guess you are a sheep in the flock of your country, but most people accusing others of being sheep are sheep themselves under that logic.

Back to the original topic, I'm still certain that I'm not responsible for a group of drug using sadistic murderers going on a killing spree a world away. The world is full of evil people.
