I've been rereading his quotes lately and man he was a cool dude!
and his thoughts current today and just heartwarming...and I love the beard...sexy 8-)

"We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses."

"When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."

"Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally"

"Those who look for the bad in people will surely find it."

"If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?"

Love it ...wish I could have known him...or visited with him once
I'm going to try to post one daily... His insight a lovely tool for the day! :D

Its cool he lived /died 146 years ago
and his words/quotes roll from the tongue, relevant, simple, some funny, some filled with irony

He also was a master like Eddie, with his words...connected to that universal creative energy
    that brings revelation.

Funny I guess Abe is my new revelation  I might be a slow learner ;)

I read somwhere that he talked in a really high pitched voice. But anytime he's recreated or impersonated he's got this very deep, maculine, god-like voice. Guess it helps his image and I'm sure the repubs are responsible for it.

There probably isn't a bigger admirer of Lincoln on this board than me. :P I have always been fascinated by him. He wasn't the saint that's he's portrayed as these days, but he was a great man. I'm a HUGE history buff. My office is loaded with historical displays. This is one of my favorites, even though it may seem a little weird to some. It's a framed display that I have, and it contains a lock of Lincoln's hair (weird I know, but a common practice back then), a piece of the flag from his funeral train, and his signature.

wow that is really cool. i think you mentioned having that a few years ago. that has got to be worth some serious money, i mean the flag was only so big and he only had so much hair. he is my favorite president as well. the way he presided over the events of and judt prior to the civil war is something that i really admire. i think it says a lot more about a man if you look at how he leads a divided nation than a united one.

looking back from what i have read he was as polorizing a figure as w. bush and obama are in current times. people loved or despised him.

I work for the McClurg Museum in Westfield, NY, and we've got a few artifacts of Lincoln's. Getting a piece of his hair wasn't so much a common practice back then as it was a common crime. On Lincoln's funeral train back to Illinois after his assassination in DC, pretty much everyone that could tried to get any piece of him they could to hold on to. All the buttons on his jacket were gone, most of his hair ripped out, and there are rumors that his left index finger is missing. We'll never know now, because Robert Todd Lincoln had his father buried under 10 feet of concrete, but it all seems very plausible from a historian's viewpoint.

I'm glad you've posted these quotes, Pandora. I love getting into the debate as to whether Lincoln was the great emancipator or whether was simply a modern Bismark. I love the people who argue with me that Lincoln was simply an opportunist who used the country's circumstances to vault himself into power. All you need to do is read some of what Lincoln wrote and you would know that he had a deep passion to emancipate the slaves.

I have so much I could tell you about Lincoln, Pandora, that I just can't fit it on here. If you ever want any suggestions on readings or questions about Lincoln in general, I've dedicated the past few years of my life to studying him and would be more than happy to hold a conversation about him with you! :D:D

    Lincoln was himself a Republican.

He knows, and he's just trying to get everyone's goat, so please don't feed him. If he actually thinks there is some sort of 150 year old conspiracy by a republican party today that shares little to nothing with Lincoln's republican party, he's got bigger problems than trying to uncover the truth about Lincoln's voice.

I love the memorabilia Shawshank. How did you get that? The signature and lock of hair?

I live in Illinois, but still don't know as much about Ole Abe as I would like. I always say that when I get some time I would like to study up on Lincoln and his life. I have been to the museum in Springfield and it is good. We didn't have much time when we were there so would like to go back.

I think Lincoln was a good man, but he also had to be tough and politically savvy to be as successful in politics as he was. Sounds almost like a contradiction - good man and politically savvy.

Wow Shawshank, that is a great display honoring President Lincoln...
lovely and a wonderful conversation piece too I'm sure,
a beautiful tribute to your idol.

I had no idea when I was moved by his quotes others here were moved by him also.

Big Drop, that is sad about his funeral train home, I'm sure if he were looking down on it all
he'd have some wonderful humorous insightful thoughts to share, though.

I would be like a fresh slate for knowledge...
I would say an empty brain but someone may use that against me here at later date

I would love to hear yours and others stories and thoughts, please share.

Honoring a great man with a wonderful positive attitude about life is uplifting for us all.
