Brad Klausen – From a Basement in Seattle: poster art by Brad Klausen ($24.95 Akashic)
with introductions by Eddie Vedder and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam’s longtime in-house designer, Brad Klausen,
presents his first book of visually stunning poster art.
“Klausen’s left-field philosophies and twisted narratives beautifully underscore the stunning large-format artwork and contribute a greater depth of expression. A must-have for any music fan, artist, or aspiring graphic designer.” –Publishers Weekly, Starred Review and Pick of the Week
“Stylized, suggestive, gorgeously composed, Klausen’s art is the work of a metaphorist who sees the world from an admittedly skewed angle.” –The Seattle Times
FROM A BASEMENT IN SEATTLE is an extensive look into the creative process through which artist Brad Klausen generates imagery for rock posters for Pearl Jam, Built to Spill, Queens of the Stone Age, and others. Starting chronologically with the first poster he ever made all the way to the most recent, covering more than seventy-five different works, the book follows the growth and development of the Klausen’s entire catalog. Alongside the image of each finished poster are sketches and detailed commentary of the story behind the execution and concept of the individual designs.
ALL THE NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN PIECES AND PARTS that were used to build each design are included: the initial rough sketches, the final inkings, the hand-drawn and computer-drawn typographic elements, and all other elements used in the construction of the final piece. Klausen takes apart and dissects each design to show how the artwork comes together, providing the viewers a rare look over the shoulder of the artist and allowing them to take a look inside the creative process of what goes into making rock posters.
BRAD KLAUSEN grew up in Southern California and moved to Seattle in 1999 to begin a nine-year career as the in-house graphic designer for the world-famous rock band Pearl Jam. In July 2007 he launched Artillery Design, his one-man design shop where he continues to make posters for Pearl Jam, Built to Spill, Widespread Panic, and many other bands. He still lives in Seattle.0 -

WTF? I live in Dallas (a northern burb) and Fairfield is like 2 hours south in middle-of-nowhereville. I'd love to get my LA2 06 signed. Doubt I can make the trek. It's ok though, wasn't expecting a Klausen visit in Dallas anyway. It's just weird that he's going way down there.0 -
does he personalize books, or just sign them?0

I wonder if he'll sign posters, too? Would like my Showbox to sport his John Hancock...

Presentation: Brad Klausen “From A Basement In Seattle”
With Molly Crabapple
Brad Klausen was the graphic designer for Pearl Jam for 10 years. In 2007, he started Artillery Design and began creating all manner of images spanning mythology, theology, psychology, recycled pop culture. He still lives in Seattle, and he still makes posters for bands (such as Built to Spill and Widespread Panic), but the posters have left the basement. Come out for Klausen discussing his work and his book “From A Basement In Seattle.” Molly Crabapple - the illustrator, the awesome, the creator of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School - will join in the fun too. Don’t miss your chance, ’cause music fans and art nerds are gonna unite!0 -

FORMER PEARL JAM GRAPHIC DESIGNER TO CONDUCT POSTER ART EXHIBITION
Fairfield, Texas, March 21, 2011 - For 9 years before opening his one-man design shop, Artillery Design, Brad Klausen was in-house graphic designer for the world-famous band Pearl Jam. Klausen has created poster art for Pearl Jam, U2, Queens Of The Stone Age, Widespread Panic, Alice In Chains, and other well-known musical groups. From March 26th through May 18th, 2011, a limited engagement showing of his poster art will be on display at Healthy Rhythm Community Art Gallery in Fairfield, Texas.
Not only will Klausen’s artwork be on display at the Gallery for two months, but also, coinciding with an East Coast and Midwest book signing tour, Klausen plans to attend the unveiling of his exhibition, “Printing Outside The Margins”, on March 26th at 6:30 in the evening. That evening, there will be an artist book signing and question and answer session. Klausen has also agreed to donate a limited number of signed prints to Healthy Rhythm Community Art Gallery to auction as a fundraiser for the event.
