It's hard to tear yourself away from the horror of it. I've been mesmerized by the raw video of the tsunami coming in. It's been an awful year for disasters, but this is just relentless with the radiation threat on top of everything else. And then it will be the water borne illnesses... it's just awful.

I wonder how much warning they had that the tsunami was coming. It must have been terrifying to hear those alarms start blaring.

my brother lives in Guam. was on facebook with him friday morning. said the had a warning that got pushed back from 7 to 11. guessing that was pm since we spoke at about 5 our time. he's 14 hours ahead. Havn't heard from him what if any damage occured once it did hit. seemed largely unconcerned. said where he is at is 600 ft above sea level. He's Fire Chief of Andersen AF Base. Well aquainted with disaster response.

From all the reports, the tsunami hit in the NE not very long after the quake. Within a half hour or less.

Wow. And figure, with the time of day, lots of people were at work. No time to go home and retrieve anything _ or even if you're home, I'm assuming you run like hell.

The images that really blew me away were the ones showing the surge of debris flowing over fields. The velocity was amazing.

Edit: Here it is... and there's a vehicle on that road, driving away. I hope they made it.

Yea, its terrible, but if the US spends 1 fucking dime on them, omfg. Im young, and I dont follow/understand politics much, but Im old enough to know how broke we are, and we got our own damn problems. If the radiation shit affects Hawaii, then deal with Hawaii, not Japan

People are dieing and you are thinking about money?

Our deficit ain't shit. I was just thinking how I could help them. In the end money is nothing.

When the giant Yosemite supervolcano blows and destroys North America, I hope someone comes to our aid. I'd like to think we lend a helping hand regardless of the cost.

Our country is broke because it is run by morons. Doesn't mean we can't do what we can to help people. Gotta make up for the stupidity somehow.

Dont mean to come off as greedy, just seems like this country is always putting aside its problems for others, and for what? Every other country hates us, and when we will need help, who's gonna give it? We would deserve it considering what we've done for other countries, but they'll look at us and say "They're the super power of today, let them handle it."

Countries don't like us because as shitty as things might seem here, we have it better than most of the world. The United States is very arrogant. When the shit hits the fan here, I'd like to think the rest of the world will have our backs. Helping other countries the good thing we have going for us.

I think you underestimate the rest of the world. Hundreds of millions of dollars of international aid was offered to the US following Hurricane Katrina and most of it was turned down ... and some of the aid accepted was just left to go to waste.

Here is a list of countries and organisations (including the European Union) that pledged aid

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internatio ... ne_Katrina

I hope that Japan gets as much aid as they need.

    We can't find my uncle.
One of my mom's oldest friends is in Sendai and we can't get a hold of her.
They have projected the death toll may be over 10,000 people.
My father's hometown is 80% underwater.
One of my closest friends I've met through Pearl Jam is sitting through aftershocks measuring above 5.0 and worry that his friends, colleagues, and the rest of the country are okay.

You seem very young, but probably not much younger than me.
We both probably have a lot to learn, but for you I think compassion should be on the top of your list.

I wish your mind was as open as the floor and you're "ears" appear to be.
Maybe you should open those eyes of yours and read how much money your government spends on the war.

"omfg", its like, a "trillion bazillion" dollarz'.
If you want to complain about your deficit, you can start with that, instead of complaining about aid. Even the poorest of this continent, of your country, of my country, are richer than 70% of the world's population. Of course, in your apparent new-found wisdom of your country's affairs, you know that 1/5 of your country holds 85% of the wealth too. So while you're worried about the deficit affecting the greater good of your country you complain about foreign aid being the problem, and not the tax breaks all the rich get? Of course, you'll probably cry "Socialism!" - assuming, you are old enough to know what that is.

My country is projected to spend 29 billion dollars on fighter jets we didn't need. Do you know that's equivalent to the GDP of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Togo, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and Honduras combined? I also calculated that 29 billion dollars could rebuild Haiti, knock it all down, and rebuild it once again.

Wars and jets aside, I have to watch as my father tries to cope with the fact that 10,000 people are assumed dead in the prefecture he grew up in. The place where he can't get a hold of his brother or many friends. I would much rather see my money go towards HELPING people, especially those in a catastrophe, than going towards killing.

Well, that's just my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own. You are entitled to yours, but as someone who is a part of the same generation as you, age is no excuse for being ignorant. And callously complaining about your country's "own damn problems" when entire towns are being wiped out - not only in Japan - is ignorance.

I also remember the many, many kindnesses and gestures of support from other countries after 9/11. It was very moving and I was sad that we later responded with such arrogance and alienated people around the world.
