The fact that there is a thread here makes me SICK! Phil Collins is the WORST "musician" of all time. If he comes on and I'm at a bar, I will leave, probably not come back. They were playing an entire album of his at my grocery store I visit daily, I spoke with the manager and made it very clear they will lose me as a customer and likely others unless they change the AWFUL crap(I can't call it music). The best part was, the manager was equally annoyed with the noise, but an employee begged for it... sheesh, he's been legally deaf for how long now, yet people still think he is making good "music"?
Phil Collins DEFINITELY owes the world an apology...
beyond the harsh comments, this might be the most disturbing part of the thread. i dont claim phil collins is the best musician of all time. he isnt. but if this story, pjtaper, is true, you have major issues my friend. if you fly off the handle for a grocery store playing phil collins in the store, what would you do if someone disagrees with an opinion you have in real life? If someone hates PJ or a band you love, do you punch and assault them? I mean come on.
nope... I know people that HATE pearl jam and love Phish, to each their own... I don't care if someone says the most awful things to me, I'm a peaceful guy, BUT... There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to force other people to listen to Phil Collins... NO REASON! There is no excuse...

I feel a part of the indie scene to an extent just by digging the music, but I can feel a part of the scene without wearing tight pants.
Brilliant. Feeling a part of the scene has nothing to do with where you shop, and what you wear, or what literature you read. Personally, I feel it comes down to your belief. It's how you act, not how you look. If you like and follow these indie bands and pay for their material and pay to go see them, you're already a part of the scene... more so than you ever will be from wearing tight jeans, drinking PBR, wearing a v-neck shirt, and having a shitty beard, or a disposition that you're more hip and cool than everything else walking.
musicismylife, I'm not singling you out... just identifying the whole scene with how I've been exposed to it for a while now.
The music scene is the music that is created, not in the fashion being worn when it's created. That is a fashion scene. Although, I guess everyone needs to conform and wear a "uniform".
Yeah, although I do occasionally like to sport a shitty beard, I have no idea why ANYONE would drink PBR. No matter how cool it is.
I met 'The Head And The Heart' this past week here in Ottawa. I liked the fact they weren't a bunch of pretensious hip motherfuckers. I shot the shit about Mariners Baseball and the Showbox in Seattle, as they just sold it out and I wanted to congratulate them.
Same with Broken Social Scene. Some of their fans are complete snobs. I've met them, and just hipster BS, PBR, tight jeans, snob at my Pearl Jam hoodie. Then I met Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning who could not have been more accommodating and nicer when I met them, even getting my friends on the guest list for the show that night. The fans need to take heed and just drop the attitude and chill the fuck out.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
musicismylife - i think maybe you are overstating the current state of "indie" music right now. you always mention it as if it as if this scene just exploded in 2001 like "grunge" did around 91. maybe that's just when you started getting into it. i agree, with the advancements of the internet, "indie" has been getting a lot more recognition, due to people becoming more exposed to it, which is exciting. but these kinds of avant garde type bands you are talking about are nothing new. they've been around for years, and i don't feel like it has grown in popularity that much. the playing field has probably been leveled a bit, due to people having access to a lot more information about what they are listening to. bands like velvet underground, the stooges, talking heads, the police, flaming lips, sonic youth, the pixies, yo la tengo...you know who i'm talking about. all these bands were doing this "indie" music 20, 30, even 40 years ago.

i agree to a certain extent, but the grunge explosion we all remember so well, was also the same deal. kurt and ed and mudhoney, green river, tad , and soundgarden. had been flying the grunge flag since the mid 80's. so the piercing scream of nevermind specifically teen spirit that heralded the start of the scene also was a red herring, so to speak.
indie's the same way. that said, i stick by my 2001 statement. thats when the "the" bands became big. the the vines, the white stripes, the hives, and the strokes. while none were indie, all kickstarted a new movement, from the stale and boring and played out numetal and raprock scene that had defined the late 1990's and early in the year of 2000. Is this it, was a huge event.
i think its silly to suggest indie hasnt grown immensely since 2001, or even 2003. Can you imagine Is this It getting a grammy in 2001 or 2002, much less one for album of the year? How about indie rock bands scoring tv commercials, movies, and being name dropped by Jay-z and chris martin and huge pop culture icons as putting out the most challenging and "important" albums and music in the entire music scene?
I find it hard to comprehend the idea that anyone could tell me indie rock in 2001 and indie rock a decade later, that the scene hasnt become monstrously huge. I mean, pitchforks impact has only grown. lollapalooza, bumbershoot, bonnaroo, coachella and all the other festivals rather routinely feature indie centric lineups, the end of decade best albums lists all had indie albums dominating the lists,
i get it, i hear ya, the pixies were indie rock, rem were as well. but lets be real here, things have changed. as i keep saying, its now routine for top tier indie acts like arcade fire, the national, band of horses, spoon, death cab, modest mouse etc... to top the billboard top 200 albums list. the pixies could never do that.
peoples tastes have changed. at some point, britney spears and christina no longer were top news in music, and kids turned their playlists to postal service, and bright eyes and lcd soundsystem. i for one cant think of anything that makes me happier

i hear what you're saying, and we'll just have to agree to disagree. i don't think pitchfork is as big as you think it is. most people still don't know what it is....and with those bands topping the billboard list, keep in mind how much the way people listen to their music has changed. it's not secret that albums sales have been in a huge and steady decline over the past decade. you can top the list in 2011 by selling 50,000 copies, while 10-15 years ago that number was closer to a million+. that's a huge difference. also keep in mind that the people who listen to "indie" music are probably more likely to buy albums than people who listen to top 40 and just buy singles on itunes.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to force other people to listen to Phil Collins... NO REASON! There is no excuse...
I agree with this. What you listen in your home or your car is your business. But keep it behind closed doors if it's this bad.
Ah man - my dentist plays this horrible country music station. And it's Philadelphia - there's only one fucking country music station. And it's not like it's Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson. I mean this is basically bubble-gum pop garbage with a stupid twang. And I'm at the fucking dentist! Shit, I need to find a new dentist. But this one is right across the damn street. I guess we lost the Civil War after all.
So anyway, I'd take Phil Collins over that shit any day.

I saw the Abacab tour and it was killer. Vari-lites? Chester and Phil drum duo. Awesome.
I saw Phil solo in 83 and in 85-awesome Earth wind and fire horns! Again chester and phil drumtastic.
You tube behind the lines and the roof is leaking.
+1. duke tour was my first show. saw them up until invisible touch tour. i was to young to see him play with gabriel.
and if u can't say something nice then....why spend time writing 20+ words on what you hate? u obviously have way too much time on your hands, or perhaps u have a chip on your shoulder cause phil somehow pissed in your cheerios, or perhaps, you are just a really bitter person.... when it comes to music your opinion only matters to you. i really could care less about what you hate. tell me what you like/love, ok. turn me on ok. don't turn me off.
i love phil's latest cd. as good as that epic first few solo tours/cds. he nails in my lonely room. love motown still.

well said, both of you. there are a disturbing number of young 'adults' who go to shows who treat music as a scene and not as, you know, music. it's the hipsters who understand music THE LEAST.

+1. duke tour was my first show. saw them up until invisible touch tour. i was to young to see him play with gabriel.
and if u can't say something nice then....why spend time writing 20+ words on what you hate? u obviously have way too much time on your hands, or perhaps u have a chip on your shoulder cause phil somehow pissed in your cheerios, or perhaps, you are just a really bitter person.... when it comes to music your opinion only matters to you. i really could care less about what you hate. tell me what you like/love, ok. turn me on ok. don't turn me off.
i love phil's latest cd. as good as that epic first few solo tours/cds. he nails in my lonely room. love motown still.

well said, both of you. there are a disturbing number of young 'adults' who go to shows who treat music as a scene and not as, you know, music. it's the hipsters who understand music THE LEAST.
that right there is a classy motherfucker who can sing
from a "music fan" i expected more. maybe u r 17years old though. go play somewhere else. this party is clearly not for you.
Dude, do you need a grammar lesson? I specifically said the stupid country music was NOT playing Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson. They were playing crappy country pop. WTF is your problem? What the hell does Creed have to do with it? (Johnny Cash is actually playing on my iPod right now.)
Yes, Phil Collins is clearly superior to whatever the fuck that station was playing. (maybe it was Tim McGraw or something)
Let's sum up this thread: one guy is a know-it-all hipster indie follower guy. Another guy is anti-Phil Collins nazi. Nice.
