It's going to be a scary pitch black night for all those people still trapped in the buildings.

doompony, this seismologist reckons that there is now an increased chance of a big one hitting Wellington. http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-storie ... e-to-come/ Why am I moving there again? (kidding)

they've been telling us we're going to die any day for years. i think the newsreaders were getting kind of shitty with the seismologists on tv tonight because they were pointing out the painfully obvious. one of them segued out of an interview with "proving it's an inexact science"

fact of the matter is, if they could predict it, they would have. they can't. so... we wait. and hope that all the work put into earthquake proofing the building codes and such protects us.

Queenstown is looking better and better! ;)

some days the same experts say that the hundreds of tiny earthquakes that we can't feel that occur every year are letting off pressure to lessen the chances of the big one happening. it all depends on who you listen to.

earthquake kits generally are sposed to have enough bottled water and non perishable food for 3 days, can opener, gas cooker, torch, radio, batteries, first aid kit, shoes... um.. that's off the top of my head.

i have 2 empty plastic bottles that are on top of my fridge. oops.
  • Very bad, been watching the news all night.
My thoughts and prayers go out to our Anzac brothers/sisters.
I hope our fellow NZ 10c members are okay.
Poor people died in there vehicles from falling rubble :(
Our local TV presenters talked to a trapped woman via phone, she is trapped under her desk in total darkness calling for help from her mobile.

GOd, Just heard a guy say there was people in the tower at the cathedral when it hit. Now it is just rumble, he suspects they are dead as they can't access it now.

I know there is deaths, I just hope they are at a minimum. SO many trapped...

One guy saw half a tonne of bricks land on a man. People crushed in cars.... not a good site.

My brother-in-law and sister are probably heading in as part of the relief effort. scary shit... waiting to hear from friends still...

Anyway, if one believes in a God, who's place is it to question? Certainly not your or mine, and I will say... God Defend New Zealand,

I must have been completely out of the loop as I've just seen this and my thoughts are with all the grieving people there. Unfortunately a lot of the spectacular places in the world are on fault lines and this is always likely to happen. After spending a month there not so long ago New Zealand will always be a very special place to me.

Ok, let's not let this thread get nasty, it's all about our thoughts and prayers (if you so believe) for the people of Christchurch.

I don't know what to say here.
I know I will see communities from around the world, rise up to help re-build the devestation.
That in turn will give us warm feelings in our hearts and stomaches.
It will not bring back the dead but it can give us strength to carry on legacies.
Your in my thoughts and prayers.

yeaaah.. not really the right time to question what other people take comfort from. but the fact of the matter is, god defend new zealand is our national anthem, which i'm pretty sure is all that was meant by that.

What about the surrounding areas around Christchurch, how were they effected? It says on the BBC site
"The quake caused some 30 million tonnes of ice to shear away from New Zealand's biggest glacier. Witnesses say massive icebergs formed when the Tasman Glacier in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park broke, creating huge waves."

IN the newspaper this morning they're saying the official death toll now is 38 so maybe the 65 figure last night wasn't right.

I couldn't sleep well last night. I live on top of a fault line, and all night I was jumpy. My works head office is in Chch, I spoke to one of the guys this morning, they are all ok but the accounts ladies house is totalled and another's house is full of silt from the liquefaction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soil_liquefaction

I sorted my emergency kit after the 7.1 quake in September. It is so scary.

Might be a dumb question, but what is an emergency kit? Rations?

    Thinking of you all.

I had such a great time in Christchurch when I went to see PJ. Auckland was good but it was very similar to Sydney. Christchurch was something else though. So beautiful. Very sad :(

The planes have been taking off from Richmond RAAF base most of last night heading across the ditch. Good to see the ANZAC spirit alive and kicking.

the confirmed numbers keep jumping up and down depending on who they ask. they're being careful not to give official death numbers except where people have been identified and the families notified. that's why john key's 65 last night was a big jump up from the 17 they'd been giving.
