Still can't understand people hating First Impressions of Earth so much. Go listen to fucking Vision of Division. This is absolutely the greatest Strokes song.
I love first impressions.
easily my favorite Strokes CD
then again, im usually in the minority when it comes to which albums i like most from a band.
(see the new radiohead album thread )
this new album is highly addictive. once you get past the cheesy 80's feel of some of the songs, its really freakin good.
I just listened to the new one this morning on my little iPod speakers at work - not much of an attempt. Sounds like it will take some getting used to this sound though.

About half of the album is fantastic, with "Machu Picchu," "Under Cover of Darkness," "Two Kinds of Happiness," "Gratisfaction," and "Life Is Simple in the Moonlight" especially sticking out for me. Unfortunately, there are some songs on here that I don't care for at the moment, such as "You're So Right" and "Call Me Back".
Still, the good songs prove that these guys still got it. Glad that they're playing music again.
This is exactly where I'm at. Those 5 you mentioned are the one's I downloaded. The others I don't care for at all. First Impressions is my favorite Strokes album & I agree with another poster who said the highs of this album don't equal the highs of First Impressions. I'm still happy to have 5 new Strokes songs that I like though.

Based on the first 3 albums, my expectations are to get a few songs that I really like, but not a full, solid, consistent album. I'm sorry, but they haven't made one yet, and I don't expect them to. I'll just add a few good new songs to my Strokes playlist and listen to that. It's ok - I only paid $4.

I love the strokes. My fav album is First Impressions......Angles is a total disappointment, especially after hearing Under Cover of Darkness which could be one of the strokes' finest moments....the album fails to come close to this song. For me its totally style over substance....production is great but who gives a fuck when theres no hooks and no soul. Really disappointed. 4/10.
In order, what are the best Strokes albums (including Angles)?? I have "is this it".
Here's how I see it...
You already own their best record. 'Is This It' is a stone cold, undeniable classic - absolutely essential listening. 'Room On Fire' is stylistically very similar but with nice little new-wave flourishes here and there (little guitars riffs that sound like keyboards, handclaps, etc). Although it's very good, some of the songs don't quite match the quality of those on 'Is This It'.
'First Impressions Of Earth' is a departure for the band in terms of sound. Much less 'lo-fi' than the previous two - the sound is much fuller and, dare i say it, heavier in places (see Juicebox, Heart In A Cage for example). The first half of the record is fantastic - killer song after killer song after killer song. But, in my opinion, it's overly long and the quality dips quite drastically after the halfway mark. They could have probably trimmed it down to an incredible 10-track album.
'Angles' harks back to the sound of their first two records, only with the added 80's influences that you've probably read about already. Short, snappy - I like it a lot. Yeah, there's a couple of tracks on there that are skippable - and given that it's only a 10 track album, that's probably not a great average. But as an overall listen, i much prefer it to FIOE. It's a really summery sounding record too - I can imagine driving around on a hot summer day with the windows down and this blasting out of the stereo.
Best to worst in my opinion: Is This it --- Room On Fire --- Angles --- First Impressions Of Earth

I'll give the new album a listen and see.

I enjoyed it, thanks. More than the guys themselves, it seems.
The album: a few good songs, a few downers - I don't like Bossa nova, and there are a few songs influenced buy it, total downer for me. All in all, I think it's a good album, really liked some songs (pretty much the same already mentioned as people's favourites), and even those that I didn't I wouldn't call bad. Didn't think anything was bad or cringeworthy really, still appreciate the band.
They are going to have another album soon, right? With more guitars, pretty please?
This is by far their best performance off this new album. Julian (while kinda lookin like he's got an Alice Cooper thing going on - not sure if its makeup or lack of sleep ) is very animated and looks great in that regard. SNL performance was very meh. The lyrics posted here w/ this vid are WAAAAY off.
Im pretty sure this is my fav song off the new album. Along with Machu Picchu.

^^^^^ I would have to agree. Taken for a Fool and Maccu Pichu are probably the best two songs of the album. But the order should go more like. Is This It, Angles, First Impressions, Room On Fire
Just gave it it's first listen...and I got to say I like it alot...only two songs I'm not feeling are Games and Call me back....did'nt like them at all...
First Impression of earth will always be my favoite Strokes album I think. Fuckin love that album.
I am shocked with all this First Impressions love. I can't stand most of that album.
EDIT: and I'm not trying to say my opinion is right and everyone here is wrong, I am just honestly surprised. As they say- reasonable minds can differ .

Now this is exactly how I feel about the new album....
Ok so after a few more listens I can honestly say "Angles" is The Strokes worst album. Not saying I don't like it, there is some good stuff on there, but after 5 years I expected better.
Of course my mind could change a 100 times over the next while, but thats my opinion so far.

Gratisfactions still pretty cool. but this is by far their weakest effort. And the 80's cheese factor is at an all time high.

Of course my mind could change a 100 times over the next while, but thats my opinion so far.
This is where I'm at. I've given it a few listens and it hasn't grown on me at all. Even the songs I liked initially (Machu Piccu, Two Kinds Of Happiness, etc.) aren't staying with me. Gratisfactions still pretty cool. but this is by far their weakest effort. And the 80's cheese factor is at an all time high.

Elvis did 3 songs as a preset and was terrific as usual. He also did "taken for a fool" with the band......Awesome!!!
I was on the rail in front of Julian, he jumped in a few times.... And finished the show in the crowd
New songs song good live. Lotta fun
Awesome! Wish i could have gone. Sure there are videos on youtube already.
