    Great piece about the band's career: http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/ ... e-strokes/
  • ive always heard that there have been major tensions between the band and that resulted in the long wait from 2006 until now in terms of them not releasing new music.

but what specifically were the issues between the band members? Who was fighting and about what?

Not going to judge further till i get more listens in. The Strokes usually take some time for me.
After reading that P4K article, I'd be surprised if we get another album out of these guys.
Sounds like an awful process for them.

I am a huge fan of The Strokes. That being said, I am not a huge fan of this album. It doesn't really flow, and after a 5-6 year hiatus with no albums, this is a really disappointing product to put out. There are a couple good tracks, but it's nowhere near as good as any of the previous releases. I have listened to it a few times hoping it would grow on me, and it hasn't.

I hope this is not their last album together. It'd be a sad way to go out.

At first I was surprised, has a heavy 80's sound on a lot of it. I've heard comparisons in reviews of some songs to Thin Lizzy and The Cars, and another one that sounds like 2000's U2 in some spots, I think those are spot on. I wasn't in love with it at first, but the more I listen the more I like it. I read in an interview Nick Valensi said no matter what they put out, people would have a problem with it not being good enough because it's been 5 years. I'm sure the album will get some complaints in that respect, but I think a few of the songs on here are among their best. Definitely an album you need to listen to a few times. The first track catches you totally off guard from how the single is, that's why I gave it all a few listens. At 37 minutes, you could run through it 3 times in under 2 hours!

i'm listening to it right now for the second time. the first time i listened to it while i was trying to sleep and i had a hard time paying attention to it. nothing has really grabbed me either so far, although it doesn't sound terrible or anything. that said, especially since you consider yourself a huge strokes fan, i think you owe it to yourself to give it some time. i mean shit, the album hasn't even been officially released yet. i have a feeling listening to it that it might be a grower. just feels like one of those albums that might be more rewarding over time....or it might just never click and eventually be forgotten about. either way, maybe at least wait for it to come out and give it a proper month before writing it off. you might end up loving it.

downloaded it, but haven't listened to it yet. Not sure what to expect, hopefully good.

Saw this article on NME the other week, pretty interesting.
The Strokes' Nick Valensi has described the recording process for the band's new album 'Angles' as "awful".

The returning New York five-piece have made no secret of the tension during sessions for their long-awaited fourth album. Now Valensi has said he is refusing to record their next one in a similar way.

"I won't do the next album we make like this," he told Pitchfork.com. "No way. It was awful – just awful. Working in a fractured way, not having a singer there."

Valensi was referring to band sessions at which singer Julian Casablancas was absent, instead recording his vocals alone away from the rest of the group.

"I'd show up certain days and do guitar takes by myself, just me and the engineer," the guitarist added. "Some of the third album [2006's 'First Impressions Of Earth'] was done that way, but at least we were on the same page about what the arrangements and parts were.

"75 per cent of this album felt like it was done together and the rest of it was left hanging, like some of us were picking up the scraps and trying to finish a puzzle together."

He added that the follow-up to 'Angles' wouldn't be long in the pipeline. "I feel like we have a better album in us," he said, "and it's going to come out soon."

    After one listen I feel:

    - The Strokes have now released two great albums followed by two bad efforts
    - This is 5 years worth of creativity?
    - I am so happy I did not spend $70 on the MSG show (Yes- you read that right. They were charging 70 bones)

I hope this changes but I doubt it will.

What does an album that ur not feeling have to do with a live performance??? Maybe the songs will translate better live, maybe they won't. Are they really that bad, I don't think it's their best effort.... But let's walk away from that ledge

Are you kidding with your question? They are touring to promote the new album. On first listen I don't like the new album. Obviously it has its effect.

And I don't see these songs translating that well. I have seen the band 3 times already and if I don't start liking the new album fast- there will be no reason to see them again anytime soon.

^ first impressions of earth is really good btw, lotta pj fans hated backspacer, and I remembered bumping into them at preparties after they pretty much swore off the band. I give a band props for venturing out and making new sounds and trying new things. It's ballsy, not like 95% of bands who pretty much put out the same record all the time.

You have a right to your opinion, I didn't say you were wrong, I just didn't see a direct correlation between 5-6 songs off a new album being played at the show (that's not good in your opinion)Vs the rest of the set.

But it is a tough economy, and we all have choices.

Sorry if I came off harshly- I think I read your original statement as being nasty.

The thing with The Strokes is that they only play an hour and a half (encore included) and I wouldn't be surprised if it was more like 8 songs played off the new record. There are plenty of other concerts I have coming up so this one will have to be nixed from my calendar.

  • The MSG show is sold out anyways, isnt it? So youd be paying scalper prices, not $70. Unless u got real lucky. I saw a set list from the first show they played. They didnt kill em with the new songs. But honestly, Im not sure how many of the new songs Julian could pull off live. He hits some pretty high notes on the album which maybe be something that he can only do in the studio. Also, they didnt really play much of First Impressions. I guess thats how most people want it. Im in the minority on that one. First Impressions is my fav Strokes CD. This new one is awesome and Im really feeling Taken for a Fool and Machu Picchu right now. Im not quite sure how this album will hold up in the line up of their albums after some time, but as of now, Im loving it.

At first i was kinda ashamed to bump Two Kinds of Happiness in the car real loud. Its sooo 80's. But then my b/f made me realize, it sounds just like a Tom Petty song. Julian even sounds kinda like 80's Tom in that song. So, now i can handle that one. Still a little cheesy tho.

I held off buying them the day they went onsale. I think I would be able to get tix for less than 70 the day of the show. I have a good history of doing that, especially at MSG.

Here's what I got coming up: 2 UFC Events, Neil Young, Tres Mts., PJ20 Festival, the NYC Ed shows, LCD Soundsystem, and Fleet Foxes. Skipping out on TV on the Radio because I have class that night and some other little shows since Neil charges so much :D .

Julian Casablancas says the band have already started on 'Strokes No 5'

    * March 16, 2011

The Strokes have already started work on songs for the follow-up to new album 'Angles'.

Frontman Julian Casablancas said that the New Yorkers had been due to knuckle down on the new material already, but sessions were delayed due to the mixing process of their fourth album.

"I think we’re going to start working on stuff as soon as possible," he told Shortlist. "We were supposed to already, but it took longer than expected to master the album. I didn't want to work on 'Strokes No 5' until 'Strokes No 4' was done."

Guitarist Nick Valensi added: "There's material in the works. We have a lot of music stockpiled so, in terms of content, we’re in a good place right now. If I had it my way, we'd have another album out by the end of this year."

Bassist Nikolai Fraiture, meanwhile, said: "I don't ever want to stop making new albums. If we take another break, and I really hope we don’t, it won’t be something in my control."

'Angles' was recently made available to hear in full online. It's officially released on Monday (March 21).

  • Julian Casablancas' Track By Track Guide To The Strokes' 'Angles' (from NME.com)

    Machu Picchu

“There are lyrics about keeping yourself busy: ‘I’m just trying to find a mountain I can climb', and Machu Picchu is the Inca sacred place in the Andean mountains of Peru. So the title started out as a joke, but then the joke just started to seem fitting.”

    Under Cover Of Darkness

“It’s about someone who works in the military, and has a girlfriend. It’s cheesy, I guess, but it’s about having to leave a loved one. I weirdly like the bridge and the chorus of that Clarence Clemons song [‘You’re A Friend Of Mine’, a 1985 duet with Jackson Browne, and US Top 20 hit –’80s crap pop ed]: (sings) “Years may come and goooo!” So that was the vibe we were going for. I shouldn’t confess to these things!”

    Two Kinds Of Happiness
“It’s weird how people say they want to ‘be happy’ when it’s really two separate things: one is long term, one is short term, and they don’t have anything to do with each other. One is… well, I kind of don’t think I need to give examples, do I?”

    You're So Right

“I had some early REM vibes for a minute or two. It’s a darker one. It counters some of the happy vibes on the other tracks. I like dark things!”

    Taken For A Fool
“With regards the line ‘Monday/Tuesday is my weekend’, I originally wanted to say 'Sunday/Monday/ Tuesday' but it didn’t fit. Those were always my favourite nights to go out. I’m not into going out on Friday or Saturday - never have been. I like empty-ish bars.”

    Games

“We had guitars on it originally, but it just sounded better to me without them. It definitely has a different vibe for us. There’s a lot of weird stuff on that song: most of the weird sounds are drums that we messed with. The part at the end of the song is so old, we’ve had it for about 10 years, at least.”

    Call Me Back

“We just wanted a slow one. The chorus was a mixture of some parts that we had. That song just kind of… showed up! I can’t remember, I’ve heard it too much. I like it.”

    Gratisfaction

“It’s a sound that I usually hate, but when they were doing the background vocals on the chorus, I was trying to get [engineer/producer] Gus [Oberg] to get that, like, Boston chorus sound. You think it sounds like Steely Dan? Yeah, I suppose that’s kind of in the right vein!”

    Metabolism

“I’ve had that one for a while. I had something completely different in mind at the outset to what it is. It became something else entirely, but I’m… fine with it as it is now.”

Life Is Simple In The Moonlight

“That’s probably my favourite on the album. The verse was a random old Brazilian thing I had, but it works well with the chorus. I like the chorus: it gives me cheesy/happy chorus vibes.”

Well I finally got a chance to listen to it today. I was surprised, i kinda liked it. Yeah it's not their best album and it sounds different than their previous albums but i think that's why I like it.

Love Two Kinds Of Happiness. Like Games, Metabolism, Machu Pichu, Under Cover Of Darkness, & Gratisfaction.

Bought this today and listened to it a few times.

About half of the album is fantastic, with "Machu Picchu," "Under Cover of Darkness," "Two Kinds of Happiness," "Gratisfaction," and "Life Is Simple in the Moonlight" especially sticking out for me. Unfortunately, there are some songs on here that I don't care for at the moment, such as "You're So Right" and "Call Me Back".

Still, the good songs prove that these guys still got it. Glad that they're playing music again.

Listening on their website, "Two Kinds of Happiness" has a definite 80s feel to it.

I'm so into this album at the moment. At least half the songs are worthy of being added to my iTunes Strokes playlist. As an album, I think it's much better than FIOE and at least as good as Room On Fire. But on the other hand, I think the high points on FIOE (Juicebox, Heart In A Cage, You Only Live Once) are probably better than a lot of the stuff on this new one.

Still can't understand people hating First Impressions of Earth so much. Go listen to fucking Vision of Division. This is absolutely the greatest Strokes song.

    I love first impressions.
    easily my favorite Strokes CD

then again, im usually in the minority when it comes to which albums i like most from a band.
(see the new radiohead album thread  )

this new album is highly addictive. once you get past the cheesy 80's feel of some of the songs, its really freakin good.
