Popularity does not make an even playing field or balanced sport. So albeit the NFL grew during the pre-salary cap era in popularity, it hardly represents why it is currently the best model of balanced competition in sports today.

actually football became the most popular sport in our country back in the 80's. so...yeah.
and not once did i insinuate any of that. just correcting rw's post. i agree with you.
juggs/jeags you are correct that it became more popular but it wasn't the runaway train that it is now. i cant wait to check the ESPN "future of football" segment on Sunday morning because the sport, as a whole, has a pretty unsustainable plan for the future. At least i'm guessing that is what the piece will be about. I mean this is a sport that literally kills you, but is increasingly costly to play. So the working class kids are getting priced out (except in the south), and the rich kids mom's and dad's don't want them to play, basically only American's play it, and other countries enjoy their version(s) of football more. Its weird to think of any sport but football at the top, but people probably said that about horse racing, boxing, college football, and baseball now look at where we are...

well major league baseball canceling their world series 16 years ago didn't quite help their cause.
how is football costly to play for kids though? you need a ball, a field, and a few people. that's it... :?
in school, it's not like the kids are paying for the equipment
actually more and more kids are having to pay for their sporting equipment now (though it is being fought over in several public forums) http://www.findingdulcinea.com/news/spo ... o-Pay.html. NFL and gambling does drive things for sure, but basketball is way bigger worldwide, can be gambled on (see: NCAA tourny), is way cheaper, and takes up less space. The big problem it has is that the NFL is LIGHT Years ahead in terms of branding minorities to white consumers, maybe they'll start wearing helmets and pads in the NBA? Whatevs though...Super Bowl is tomorrow have fun and be safe!

one beverage because you have to be ready to drive to the hospital?
my friend's wife went into labor in the middle of a beer pong tourney (relax--she was only a spectator). but my friend was shit faced and they had to wait a few hours to go. luckily everything worked out.
Yeah I've been on the one solid beverage policy for about 2 weeks. It has been awesome because I don't get blasted but really enjoy the beer. Natural and Miller have written complaint notices however.
