Artists you "shouldn't" like..

Hey Everyone

I thought this would be an interesting topic of conversation.

IMO, one of the greatest things about us die hards is the TRULY exceptional variety in musical taste on this board. I can't count the times that i have found a new band or artist that i knew nothing about and now love. It is an amazing part of this culture we have here.

But still, there are those of us who only love the things we are supposed to love. That feel that the new SOundgarden song is the bst thing to happen since the 90's just becasue its from the 90's. i myself am big enough to admit that i doubt i would be as in love with Kings of Leon, Band of Horses, MMJ etc. without the enthusastic support of Pearl Jam.

To make a long story short, suspend a bit of your musical diversity lol, and name a band or two you "shouldn't like" for whatever sort of Social or pearl jam related pressure, but you love nonetheless

Fire away.. i can't wait to hear your thoughts!!

This should be an interesting discussion.

I saw a similar thread on another message board, something like bands you're embarrassed to admit you listen to. What was funny was that every time somebody posted something about their "embarrassing" listening habits, other people would jump in and say, "Hey, I really like them too!"

  • One of my more well known favorites would have to be The Killers. They have a heavy pop, 80's and even dance influence at times, but i can't help but count them among some of the more truly talented and innovative artists of the past decade.

THere songs are amazing, different vibe to a lot of what i listen to. They have evolved into a VERY good live band, one i have seen more than once, and would probably see again.
I also respect how much they respect themselves in terms of the business. In an interview a few years ago, in talking about the vices and excess that comes with being a Rock star, Brandon Flowers commented on how his after concert rituals included eating dinner with his wife and band mates and changing diapers. They seem to be in control of themselves and want to succeed in an industry they love.

Having said all that, I watched an interview with them in which they listed their modern day influneces and Pearl Jam the white stripes and the strokes LOL. I think i loved them a little more after that:)

    LOL

That is true.. Once someone else admits it we feel batter having not been the one who broached the subject lol

Though in all reality, there is nothing in the music world that ANY of us should be embarassed about... unless it is Creed or Nickelback. Then you can just hang your head in shame and GTFO hahahahahaha :)

Coldplay.........chick music category and they admit they suck.
  • I love the Killers also, they put on a good live show, and like them or not, they have such a distinct sound. I feel like they've perfected the 80's synth/pop sound to what it could have been. Brandon Flowers's solo album was one of my favorites of 2010. Saw him play at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park last month and he did an excellent cover of Bruce's "Promised Land" so even though their sound may not suggest it, they've heavy on the influences. I'd put Coldplay on this list also, but not for all these same reasons.

I'll go see Neil Diamond every time he comes through town. Don't listen to him that often, but definitely someone I like.

Amanda Palmer is one of my favorite artists, although I'm well outside her target audience.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I would LOVE to see him live. I would probably keel over and die if he played Shiloh.

I guess I'm used to the reaction to him on the Neil Young lists. Around there he's known as the Anti-Neil

    Selena Gomez & The Scene.

Although, in my defense, this is the one time that it's not all about the music. 8-)

Maroon 5- they're infectious and happen to be pretty awesome live!

Sheryl Crow- I think she's just amazing, my mom used to play her self-titled album every day in the car when she dropped me off and picked me up from pre-school and I still remember listening to that (along with the RENT soundtrack, which some songs I probably shouldnt have been listening to :) )

And DMB is somewhat frowned upon here but they are my 2nd favorite band right after PJ.

Nothing wrong with Tori. I had a bootleg of her doing an amazing version of Black at one point. I'll see if I can track it down.

WOW! That kinda rings a bell but I definitely don't have a copy of it. I should definitely try & find that. Have you seen her live? It was well over 10 years ago I saw her but jeez, very cool! :)

I haven't seen Tori, although she's on my short list of artists I'd love to see. There's always something great about seeing artists that get so into their performance like I've heard she does.

Ha ha, yeah I was trying to think what to write about how into her shows she gets. It blew me away when I saw her, you don't expect piano playing to be so well sexually charged!! Jeez she grinds away on the piano bench, sorry don't wanna get crude but yeah jeez no other way to explain the way she is/was!
