I'll take a camera going off in front of me all day as long as some 6' 5" guy isn't standing in front of me. Now that really sucks. Cameras are a minor inconvenience.

    Yeh!!!
Let's let everyone hold cameras up in front of your face the whole show.
Let's laugh it off when that flag keeps going up in front of you.
And I just love it when those guys near you spend the whole show screaming and talking to each other.
My favourite though is when just for the sake of it some large mindless dorks start moshing and almost remove your wifes front teeth with flying elbows. Freedom!!!!!
And I split my sides laughing when that plastic bottle spins through the air showering everyone with piss.

This is the way to GO!!!!!!!!!!

I like to jump about and sing but I do care about not pissing other people off.
how times you was at pj gig and someone in front of you hold 2.5 hours his camera?
come on..ill go to pj gig and ill not sing my favorite song?come on...
i m at a rock concert...if you want robots not, move, not talk no sing ,go to see opera...
Obviously you didn't read all my post. Read the last line.

Doesn't seem very rock n roll like to complain about people filming and taking pictures, just a thought. If someone is blocking your view, you have the right and should probably say something to them nicely. If that doesn't work just accidently keep bumping them, eventually they'll move. A side note, if you do want half way decent photo's turn off the flash! Your flash bulb can light up ten feet at most, so unless your that close all your doing is ruining the exposure time. As for the other comment in the initial posting, I'm not sure how you think that technology is ruining music? Without all of it we wouldn't have a live disc from every pearl jam show, not to mention websites, pj radio, photo's etc. You can't have one without the other. I think if anything it probably gets more people interested. That being said I personally wouldn't want to stand and videotape an entire show unless I was getting paid for it, but to each his own.

-complaining about photos is no more or less "rock n roll" than taking pictures for your myspace :geek:
-your back up strategy to get the photo taker to stop sounds pretty passive aggressive
-dead on with the flash suggestion
-how is having live boots, pj radio, instant access to infinite music, etc. better for music? more is not better. IN FACT people cared more about "their" bands when they got less. the ipod has ruined music not just in terms of sound quality but also the ideas of complete albums, a physical product, of having a favorite band. There were obviously live albums in the 60's... but do we need them for every concert? Do we need to see every concert on youtube? technology creates a terrible sense of entitlement

obviously theres no going back from here... just wanted to play devils advocate

Personally I like "live" music better than studio music as a preferance and therefore am very happy with the amount of live music available today most of which would not be available without the new technology. Yes we would still have live albums but not nearly as many and I'm more for an entire concert as opposed to the ten legs deal we got today. I think the digital music makes things more accessable to a larger number of people and therefore is better for the artist. Yes digital is not as good as quality, however cd's are not as good as vinyl etc, but i can take my ipod to work and not my record player. I also think the person that buys one song off itunes is the same person who bought cd singles and repeated the track several times. People may or may not have cared more about the bands when they got less, but I'm not one to complain about the diversity of music available today as I enjoy a ton of it. I don't think people need every live concert ever (i have 50 or so pearl jam ones) but I think it gives people a deeper appreciation of the band to see how they change from set to set day to day, something that before technology could only be done by the few people traveling from show to show.

And on another note, no the rock n roll thing to do would be to grab the camera and chuck it behind the stage but apparently some people want to live in a civalized society. So you got me on that one.

    thanks for the comments
  • quote="Wilds"]Who am I to question how someone wants to enjoy the concert experience. If it makes them happy then go for it.

I'm doing my own thing at a show. I barely notice anyone holding a camera/cellphone.[/quote]

agree with this ^ never notice other people filming

    I LOVE YOU TUBE

there are many many live experiences that i miss, but i still get to see them cause someone films it live, when it happens, and uploads it

please think about the people who aren't there, who would love to be there
    they deserve something

    also agree with this
i've never seen some of my favourite bands, pj included, live and so youtube is my only source for videos
cheer me up a lot watching live performances

but getting in people's way is rude, with cameras and mobile phones, signs, big hair and tall ass people (i'm only 5'3")

the worst for me is when someone is texting  hate that

OMG they are playing this song! OMG it's great

OMG why don't you put your f*cking phone down?
    idiot

    sorry rant over :D

Yup so many losers think they will actually take good photos. Only if you are in the first few rows will you take a decent picture of anything but then if your in the front row you shouldn't be wasting your spot with photos and what not.

As long as the person with the camera doesn't infringe on the enjoyment of others or the band's performance, I am ok with cameras.

I used to bring a camera to PJ shows, but it was way too distracting to worry about taking photos.

    I don't care either way.
Personally... I pretty much stopped taking pictures a long time ago. Seems like I watched most of the show through the lens finder and my pictures ended up looking like crap, anyway.
I usually just copy photos from others... only the good ones.

I don't care if people take pictures/videos...just don't hold the camera up and block my view for the entire show, that's really annoying.

No they don't! It's the people that pay for the tickets, transport, hotels that deserve something. Most of the youtube stuff sounds dreadfull and looks awful.

exactly maybe those ppl want to take pics or video think about that its not all about one person its about everyone and there are videos on youtube with a lot of views so if since there are a lot of ppl who dont like ppl recording the show who is watching all of these videos???

I went to a Nine Inch Nails concert going back a few years ago and this bloke in front of me had his mobile phone up in front of my face for ages recording. I just yelled at him, "Put ya fucking phone down and watch the bloody concert, that's what you paid for!" and he just gave me a dopey look and put his phone down. I hate it! Half the fun about live concerts are experiencing the atmosphere, watching what they do on stage and just being in the moment! Not recording the whole thing and watching it later on the computer!

 They should ban all tall people from rock concerts! There should be a sign at the door to measure your height like they have at fairgrounds for kids - "Sorry, you're too tall to go on this ride!"

Banning filming or taking photos should really only be done at the artist's discretion. There's no point in us saying "People taking photos ruin my enjoyment of a show!" and then banning it because that would be stopping them from enjoying the show in the way they like to. Then we'd have to put up with endless "I should be allowed to take photos at a show!" threads. :)

If bands specifically state that it is not to be done (EV solo shows or Powderfinger's final tour are recent examples) then people should have the respect to go along with it. If it's not specifically requested then people should be free to enjoy the show in their own way, providing it does not annoy or hurt others. As long as you are respectful to others and don't get in people's way deliberately then I really don't see what the problem is.
