Covers that are better than the original

  • Late to the party, but I concur with:

Derek & the Dominoes: Little Wing
    Foo Fighters: Baker Street

I'll add Kenny Wayne Shepherd: Everything is Broken

Conquest by The White Stripes is a remake of something, right?

I still think Trent Reznor's Hurt is better than Johnny's, but they are both incredible.

I think their version is garbage, but I guess we can agree to disagree. ;)

Actually, if we're talking S&G covers, I'd take The Bangles doing A Hazy Shade of Winter over The Lemonheads. :P

Pomplamoose ~ September (Earth, Wind, & Fire)

After seeing this video, I'm convinced that every bass drum should have a puppet attached to it.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

    Without question.

Another is Band on the Run by Foo Fighters. Foo Fighters also did a great cover of Have a Cigar (Pink Floyd) although I wouldn't say it's better- just different.

Band on the Run is really cool, but Have A Cigar makes me wanna hurl. Too much rawk and completely throws out the funky groove of the original. Their take on Bad Reputation by Thin Lizzy is another where their desire to rock as hard as possible ruins it.

I get what you are saying. I don't listen to Foo's Have a Cigar to hear a slightly different, yet ultimately the same, version. I like it for it's different approach and variation. It's too easy to do a cover, that sounds just like the original with the exception of a different voice or slightly different tempo.

I am a diehard Clash fan and usually feel like nothing can touch these versions. But this version of Rock the Casbah by Rachid Taha has always made me wonder - it's definitely AS good, and maybe better? And then in looking for video to link, guess who is on guitar in this festival clip? Mick Jones himself! I'd say that is a vote that yes, this cover rocks tremendously!! (The recorded cover by Rachid Taha is actually a bit more blistering than this live version, but it's so cool to see Mick Jones up there! And I know for a fact that Joe Strummer would have said this version is better!)

And then, Little Wing is one of my fave Hendrix songs. Like, love it love it love it (almost fell over when PJ closed Charlottesville with the full version of it after Baba - my dream final PJ encore!!). But Stevie Ray Vaughn's version almost always makes me cry. So amazing.

I'm not sure how many people would agree that this is better than the original (I think it is!) but it is definitely one of the best covers I've heard in a while. I posted it in the NIN thread yesterday and I just can't stop listening to it

Diane Birch - Copy Of A (Nine Inch Nails)

    http://youtu.be/MbXqpuaRO4c

    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”

Anything would be better than the original but this always cracks me up:

"The stars are all connected to the brain."
  • Melvins cover of Kiss' Goin Blind
We were but stones your light made us stars
  • Man who sold the world or Where did you sleep last night, Nirvana
Metallica has a bunch but I LOVE Breadfan
    Gloria, The Doors
    Smooth Criminal, Alien Ant Farm
Bad Company, Five Finger Death Punch
If I had a hammer, Trini Lopez. Peter Paul and Mary do a nice version too.

Great thread! I'll think of some more too.
