  • They never officially guaranteed tickets, but through the 2003 tour if you requested tickets you were not turned down.

That's not actually true. You had to pick a 2nd option in case your first pick got sold out. They also had much larger tours and far less fan club members back then. In fact since the 1998 tour the fan club has more than doubled because of the ticket process. So smaller tours and way more members = makes it harder to get tickets. If you really want to go to the show there are plenty of ways to get in without 10 club tickets. Just start a PJ tour fund just in case. That's what my wife and I do.

  • They would whine about it with a $20 membership...
I really like it that there are people on this board with different opinion. It's a good and normal thing to have an open discussion. Most fans here are able to do so.
What is sad is people like you, who are intollerant and closed-minded.
So not to agree with you equals 'whining'? Interesting.
Labeling other fans as 'whiners' is the poorest way of arguing.

I guess there are good arguments on both sides when it comes to the new Tenclub membership plan.
I find it to be a good idea to offer different packages, but these packeges are poorly elaborated in my eyes.

You only feel that way because the $20 membership doesn't get the record anymore(although you still get the mp3 version). Other than that reason there is no difference in the digital membership.

  • You only feel that way because the $20 membership doesn't get the record anymore. Other than that reason there is no difference in the digital membership.
For most members, there are two reasons for being in the fanclub:
One is the x-mas single (on VINYL), the other is the ticket opportunity.
For a lot of non-US fans, it is the X-mas Single that is important, since we don't have a problem getting tickets here (if they even come to our area).
Shows nearly never sell out immediately here, and because of general admission shows, Tickets are all the same.
So for these fans (and this is not a smal number), the new membership system sucks.
They have to pay $50 for the Single. Because let's face it, the Deep magazin isn't worth the paper it is written on.
When considering these points, I think there is a basis for a discussion about the new model.

They still get the single for $20, just as an .mp3. If the vinyl version is so important than put $1.67 in a jar each month and save up the $20 difference. Or get the Analog version and sell the t-shirt on ebay to make up the difference.

Red, the way you said that it sounds just so affordable and common sensical. :D Could our friends be reacting to change? Something most humans don't like? Hmmm. I don't know.

There will always be small sects of people who don't like change, even if it's for the better.

With the X-mas Single, it is not about the music for most fans in the first place. Because let's face it, the stuff released there isn't that great most of the time (although there were some highlights like 'Strangest Tribe' and some others).
It is about the vinyl, it is about collecting.

The point with collecting $1.67 a month is so stupid, sorry.
What do you say when Pearl jam sells their next album exclusively for $50?
Would you also say 'just save some money every month'?
It isn't about not being able to get the money. It is about principles. And it is about a bad deal for a lot of fans.

When you didn't get these points yet from this really long discussion, you didn't understand what most people criticising the system wanted to express.

If you want vinyl and a hard copy of Deep, those things cost more money now. Pearl Jam aren't operating in 1991 any longer. My buddy and I are trying to get some vinyl pressed for our own record, and to get fifty 45' singles printed was near $700. I can't imagine the costs of printing up the fanclub singles.

i would be a member of 10c even if i didnt get anything of the previous, cos no problem to honor the best band ever that i love with an annoual membership that some cash.
im proud member of pearl jam fan club and i can afford to do it.
the people running that fan club decide to change the membership way...they give me options..stay as you are, leave,go up level of membership..i choose..im happy, waiting for 2011 tour activity..
the last 4 days i check around i didnt see any gun point at me and ready to shoot if im not choose the new mewmbership

I don't know the costs either.
But with Pearl Jam being a major customer, and ordering thousands of singles each year, the price won't be anywhere near that what you have to pay for sure.

    1) What's good is you still can get the vinyl each year
    2) It's stupid to you because you don't want to pay it.
    3) When the new album comes out guess what, I will get both the vinyl and CD which will cost me around $40. If my cost was $50 yes I would still buy it without whining.
    4) My wife and I put PJ money aside every month anyway. The Jar says "PJ Emergency fund"
    5) How can it be a bad deal when everything you get costs more than what you are paying? The good thing is if you feel its a bad deal you can still only pay $20 and then next year when you realize how stupid of an idea it was not to go Analog you can always change your mind later that year or the following year.

A T-shirt and concert download are a minimum of $30 alone + the vinyl single and if you get tickets it's well worth $50(even though I only pay $40). Heck, if you get tickets you saved about $100 per ticket just from stub hub prices.

What's the big fuss if we're paying $15 already? A tshirt and bootleg cost that much extra.

How does anybody know the number of members in the 10c?

I know one of the main things we have in common is we all pay the Ten Club some money already - but the ill feeling this price rise is generating is very unpleasant. Is it worth it?

you're thinking of things in term of RETAIL value... i for one don't expect 10C to be running at a huge profit... and last i checked theres no stockholders breathing down their necks... assuming the band can pay 10C employee salaries with tour profits, non-10C exclusive merch sales, and album sales there's no reason the fanclub can't do better than retail... a shirt costs $3-4 with bulk orders... the download doesn't cost the 10C anything...

i know its just a matter of how you wanna justify things, but no matter how you slice it the 10C is making SIGNIFICANTLY more money with this analog package

Of course they are making money. they make more money than you can possibly imagine. There are 375,000 members. If half the members do Analog and half do digital the 10 club will make $11.5 million just in membership fees. And I'm guessing more than half will be Analog members. That doesn't even include merch. If you knew how much they were making annually your eyes would pop out.
