I was a big Bowie fan for years from the age of about 12.

My favourite albums are 'Space Oddity' and 'Hunky Dory'.

'Station To Station' is also a good one.
  • Station To Station was my favorite
I need to go back myself, it's been awhile

Agree, Diamond Dogs is another good one.
  • Really depends what mood you're in, just about every album is different. If you want some rocky stuff then you can't go far wrong with Ziggy, Diamond Dogs or Aladdin Sane. For the more experimental side go with Station To Station, possibly his best album or Heroes. Hunky Dory is amazing but doesn't really fit in any category. You should check out some of the more obscure stuff too, some of it gets passed over due to it being on difficult albums such as Outside which includes one of my favourite Bowie songs The Heart's Filthy Lesson which was also used on the Se7en soundtrack over the end credits.
    Manchester 17.8.09, Manchester 21.6.12, Copenhagen 10.7.12, Manchester 28.7.12 (EV), Phoenix 19.11.13, San Diego 21.11.13, LA 23.11.13, LA 24.11.13, Vienna 25.6.14, Leeds 8.7.14, London 6.6.17 (EV), London 18.6.18, Krakow 3.7.18, London 17.7.18, Dublin 3.7.19 (EV)
  • I think Hunky Dory is quite possibly the greatest album of all time. Quicksand is stuff of genius....

I bought Diamond Dogs to see what all the fuss was about, and it did nothin for me. It seemed like a generic Stones album to me. Maybe the whole "Rebel Rebel/Stone's song" thing was in my head too much, but it just seemed to totally tear down all the good stuff about Bowie being some amazing artist for me. I know his claim to fame is he is always changing, but if all his experimenting leads to such half assed results I'm not interested.

I like Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust. Anything comparable to those for a jumpin off point?

I saw David Bowie on his Serious Midnight, Glass Spider and Tin Machine Tours and what an extravaganza they were especially the Glass Spider Tour. It was set up like a NYC stage play and DB sat in s swing at the head of the huge spider. With dancers all around him at the stage floor he sat up top like a king on his thrown. Space Oddity is still my all time favorite song by him and I'll stop and sing those words everytime it's played.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I have his "Changes" album on vinyl, which I take to be a greatest hits. You've all provided some great recommendations. Thanks again!

Once you get into his more accessible material, make sure you get Low.

    Classic album right there.

Every Bowie album needs multiple listens for you to get into them. I didn't like any of his albums when I first heard them. It always took me at least 5 listens before they started to make sense. Diamond Dogs is a great album: 'We Are The Dead', 'When You Rock 'N Roll With Me', e.t.c.

Changes is a good compilation, I would just work out which were my favourite songs on that and buy the albums that they come from first. All of Bowies albums are good really.

I need to devote more time to listening to Bowie. I bought "Best of Bowie" when it was released in 2004, and really enjoy it. "Space Oddity" is an incredible song. That whole collection is really good. Bought "Man who sold the world" single on itunes, but it does come with the double "best of Bowie." and yeah, I must admit I learned of "man that sold the world" from the Nirvana cover.

If you want to listen to an absolutely amazing live album try Live at the Santa Monica Civic '72. It was a radio broadcast that was booted for years and then given an official release. The performance is much better than that on the Spiders From Mars soundtrack. The live sound is way different than the thin sound on the studio recordings. Mick Ronson just fuckin rips on this recording. Width of Circle and My Death are highlights for me.

  • I liked Aladdin Sane as well.

Panic in Detroit is one of his best songs for sure.

The Man Who Sold the World was no lightweight either.

Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory, again. Let's Dance, too.
Tin Machine at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston in 1991, simply the LOUDEST concert I've ever experienced.

I'm a fan of one of Bowie's live LPs, "Stage". What a band!- Carlos Alomar, Adrian Belew, Dennis Davis, George Murray, Simon House, Sean Mayes, Roger Powell and of course, D.B. Great versions of some of the hits plus- and this is really cool- some of the more obsure stuff like "Warszawa" and "Art Decade". Very affordable even on vinyl.

Another favorite is "Lodger". Pretty much the same band as above PLUS ENO! How can you go wrong!?
"Pretty cookies, heart squares all around, yeah!"
    -Eddie Vedder, "Smile"

"Try to not spook the horse."
    -Neil Young
