Republicans Block U.S. Health Aid for 9/11 Workers

WASHINGTON — Republican senators blocked Democratic legislation on Thursday that sought to provide medical care to rescue workers and residents of New York City who became ill as a result of breathing in toxic fumes, dust and smoke from ground zero.

The 9/11 health bill, a version of which was approved by the House of Representatives in September, is among a handful of initiatives that Senate Democrats had been hoping to approve this year before the close of the 111th Congress. Supporters believe this is their last real opportunity to have the bill passed.

    absolutely disgraceful.

i have come to expect nothing less from the senate. there has never been a more dysfunctional group of people in american legislative history.

and the workers that helped save lives on 9/11, the ones held up by bush and every crying nitwit talking head on fox news, they were held up as saints and angels, the angels of THE 9/11 that is the centerpiece of the republican foreign policy and agenda and justification for everything we do not foreign and domestically, are left to suffer as a result. they were used as a means to drum up sentiment for these wars, and now they are forgotten by the people that used them...i am disgusted by every single republican senator today.

Sick, huh? The heroes of 9/11 get the boot when it comes to healthcare also.

Republicans are doing fantastically with blocking every single bill. What a way to lead this country back on track, as they've said they'll do.

    Again, what are the specifics?

How were they paying for this bill?

For me, I don't know the specifics, but I think it is a bill that should be passed, however, the specific funding for the bill should be identified prior to it being introduced and passed.

Hahaha, I had a reply written asking for more clarification as to what you meant because it seemed to not make sense to me, but the reply wouldn't go through after you edited it.\

I know what the bill is about, I am just admitting to not having read the whole thing so I don't know all the specifics. I suspect most of the people voting on it haven;t read it all either though. ;)

it is the same thing the government does to all of those that serve the public.

the government will support you and fund you for as long as you are fit to serve them, or are useful to them. police, firefighters, emts, soldiers, they are glad to pay your salary and benefits as long as you are able and willing to go to work and risk your life for them. but the minute you are wounded on the job like these workers, or get a leg blown off in iraq, you get shoddy treatment and even end up on your own, like these workers.

the way i see it, if the government can pay your salary to put you in danger or pay for your trip to a foreign land to fight a war for them, they had better damn well pay for the care you require for the rest of your life after being injured, disabled, maimed, or made sick working on their behalf.

it is just the way i see it, and the way it oughta be...to put a cost on that in dollars and trying to find funding for it is just a stalling tactic. it is the moral thing to do. and to vote to not pay for this, you have no moral ground to stand on.....ahem...republican senators...you people who claim morality...in fact have none.

it has been shown this week by your votes. you hold tax decreases for middle and lower classes hostage and allow unemployment benefits to expire uniess 2% of the wealthiest people, your base, get the same tax relief, you vote against this, and hours ago you voted to not repeal don't ask don't tell....

today is the most disgusted i have ever been since that day, October 7, 2001, when we marched into afghanistan....

Wasn't it piggybacked onto the DREAM Act? I'm glad that the DREAM Act did not pass.

I say if is a good bill let it ride on its' own merit.

the words in the article don't mention the DREAM Act...so, no it wasn't piggybacked...
In a vote largely along party lines, the Senate rejected a procedural move by Democrats to end debate on the 9/11 health bill and to bring it to a vote; 60 yes votes were needed, but the move received only 57, with 42 votes against.

I guess the repubs didn't think it was a "good bill"...

Just because it doesn't mention it doesn't mean it wasn't piggy backed. Information may be conveniently left out of articles to make a certain party (either/or) look good or bad.

I guess you're of those "if I believe hard enough it must be true" folks...

do you happen to have evidence that it was piggybacked or are you just believing...

Nobody READS bills anymore. You have to pass them so you can find out what's in them. That's the new norm...just ask Nancy Pelosi.

This bill is a political tool anyway. Republicans will block it because it's another piece of unfunded legislation and the Dems will call them the party of "no" and accuse them of being un-sympathetic.

    More sensationalism.

but they are the party of no. they have not voted for a single proposed piece of legislation without it being watered down by hundreds of GOP ammendments. party of no pretty much sums up the gop.

they won't even vote to ratify the fucking start treaty...as if more nukes and no regulation or accounting of ours or russia's stockpiles is a good thing.

  • Russia is playing Obama for a fool.

First, he caved on our allies in Poland w/ missile defense, then Russia embarrassed Obama by circumventing UN sanctions on Iran by selling the AA missile systems to Venezuela- who'll now share them w/ Iran, and finally the Iranians are parking med-range missiles in Venezuela, and Obama can't even stop wikileaks from humiliating his administration's State Department. You think Putin is sitting around marvelling at Obama the Orator like our "progressive left"?

No. He's aligning himself w/ Iran and China and Venezuela and N.Korea to plan our demise.

Aren't House Democrats stalling the tax cuts for all Americans? Wouldn't that make them the party of "no" in this case? Am I going to have to pay higher tax rates because THEY won't agree to a compromise?

I thought that's what the Dems wanted Republicans and Obama to do...compromise. Is that not the case if the Dems don't get everything they want?

i just want obama to keep a single promise and not roll over.

and the rich can afford to pay more in taxes, while the working poor and middle calsses who actually spend money on things like gas, groceries, medical expenses, all of which take up a large part of their income, instead of investing that saved money, can not afford it.

why do you support the top 2% of all earners? if you are for reducing the defecit, then by default you MUST support repeal of the tax cuts for the richest 2%. that is simple math. you can NOT be for tax cuts for the wealthy AND for reducing the deficit. it can not possibly work that way.

  • All I've been hearing was how the Republicans MUST compromise or nothing will get done. They're willing to now. I do want compromise in this case, or at the very least, the tax rate needs to stay lower.

I think this Congress fully expected the Bush cuts to expire without it being a big deal. They counted on it when they spent recklessly.

  • In My Tree:

You seem like a good-natured person, and I understand where you are coming from. But there is a fundamental difference in Liberal and Conservative political ideology that you are missing.

NOTE: NOT Repub vs. Dem, those are parties that SAY they operate based on these philosophies, but... Politicians say a lot of things.

    Back to the philosophies:
Liberal: A safe bet. Peolpe need gov't to take care of them in all aspects of their lives. People work, the gov't takes the money (taxes) that they say they need to take care of the citizens, and whatever money is left over, the citizen can keep.
Conservative: A little riskier. Individual responsibilty and liberty with minimal intrusion from government into our daily lives. We keep more of our money when we earn it, and are responsible for our own livelihood.

It is a choice that all Americans must make, and you make it everytime you vote.
