The YHA in Canberra is right around the corner from the Venue.

You doing Backpackers in Sydney? My best Mate just opened a brand new one up. Shoot me a message if need be and I'll make sure he looks after the International PJ Guests : )

  • Just a heads up for those wanting to stay in Melbourne- it is also the Grand Prix that week- so accommodation is becoming scarce or at a premium $. A lot of places close by are already booked out. I think there are a few rooms left at the Crest on Barkly & Redan apartments

COME ON! there's no way it could cost less to get to Perth than it would to get to NZ!

Chugg said Vedder wanted to convey to the people of WA that it was always his intention to come to Perth, but no dates had been finalised before the tour announcement.

Chugg said Vedder "acknowledged that WA has always been good to him and the band, and he knows how loyal his WA fans are".

Chugg said there was no need to continue petitions as it was "always the plan" to bring the show to Perth.

I see. So there was always going to be a Perth show. And since the 10C have been telling Scott that there is definitely no NZ show, this nice turn of events won't happen for us.

    Nice Ed. Nice.

What about the LOYAL NEW ZEALAND FANS?

I havent been a fan long but I know alot of you guys stayed fans throughout the 11.5 years of waiting for them to come here. Now THATS loyalty. And Pearl Jam are always the band with the most songs voted into the Rock 1000 countdown

I'm not sure of the logistics, but I wouldn't be so sure about that. It's not as if it's only Ed and his guitar case travelling, there's crew/staff, the stage/PA, etc. Getting all of that over the ocean to NZ might end up being much more costly than just getting from Adelaide to Perth.

Especially given these are such small shows, the profit would likely be much smaller than with a full-blown Pearl Jam tour in bigger venues and it's probably just not feasible. It sucks but I can understand it.
  • doomponydoompony Wellington, NZ Posts: 4,501
you think he's going to drive to perth? there's less distance to cover by plane to nz than there is to perth is all i'm saying. and he wouldn't have a stage - the venues would. It's not like the pearl jam tour where they took all that stuff to be set up in otherwise-used sports stadiums. he's playing at venues that are already equipped.

Oh yeah, without a doubt, but what I'm trying to say is that Ed's travel expenses are only a small fraction of the overall costs of putting on the show.

i just don't think it would be a costly affair for him to transport his gear. and loads of bands with less money than the pearl jam machine come down to nz all the time - full bands with full band gear. i think if this is just about the money then it's really really sad.

Yeah, but touring is always about the money. If the promoter and/or Ed is going to be worse off at the end of the day, then they won't do it.

Believe me, I'm not trying to gloat or make you feel any worse about Ed not playing any shows over there. My Dad's a Kiwi and I've got loads of family over there, I'd love if Ed stopped over but I guess I'm trying to see the other side of that argument as well.

And after all of that, it may not even be a financial decision - it might just be that Ed just plain doesn't want to do more shows.

touring might be all about the money for bands with money but it's not for most normal bands who do it because they love doing it. that's why i think it's sad. i have friends in successful nz bands who still tour even though it costs them money.
  • SpencerSpencer Posts: 867
Yeah, but you can't realistically expect any musician to tour if they're going to lose money. Being a musician is still a job and there's no point going to work if you're going to end up more out of pocket than when you left.

You can't compare Ed's situation to that of a band trying to build a reputation, as even if they might lose money on one tour there might be a hope that the next time they tour they might draw a bigger audience on the basis of that first show and end up seeing an eventual profit. Nobody plays music professionally for the love of music alone - sure that's part of it, but you still need to be smart about the business side of things. People still have bills to pay and staff and crew to pay, etc.

Your bands are still trying to make it BIG which is probably why they tour even if it costs them money.

    Ed isn't.

Hi all, finally had a chance to get on here. Just wanted to say i think i've hit the jackpot for tour tix to the adelaide show. I just got seats in the FIRST 3-4 ROWS!!!

After buying my TC tix yesterday morning which was lucky enough in itself, i had a call from my uncle saying he might be able to help me out with getting premium tickets that aren't available to the general public.

I just thought he meant TC tickets, after he explained it a bit more it turns out these tickets are somehow linked direct from the venue or somethin and are garunteed first 3-4 ROWS!! It has something to do with where he works - they get exclusive tickets to everything that comes to adelaide.

The only catch was that premium tickets come with a premium price $$$ and they needed to be purchased before 12pm 7th December. Sounds like that has to do with the start of the pre-sale.

So after all that i decided to grab some for me and some friends.

I wanted to see if anyone on here wants some? I think it would be better to have the real fans up the front than guys in business suits :D

I'm pretty sure that's through ETC (Exclusive Ticketing Company). Generally you do get better seats though i'm not sure it would be guaranteed rows 3-4 as I use to do some work for ETC and Wendy the owner doesn't guarantee anything! But on the flip side you prob will get better seats that 10C.
    Have fun!

yeah i think thats who it was through, they said it was family?? in the first row and then these tix where after that.

As far as I can see, none of you are doing a thing to get a NZ tour noticed. Yes, you've got your petition. That's cool. But a couple of hundred virtual signatures isn't going to work. "Ed we want you to come to NZ so bad that we spent 5 minutes setting up an online petition".

Do something crazy. Get noticed. Get your tits out. Get 100 of you bungy jumping with "EV NZ 2011" signs. Start a street walk in Wellington ala The Hobbit. Paint yourself blue from head to toe and film yourself walking the streets getting signatures. Get some kiwi bands involved....news....radio....street press.

Yes, my ideas are stupid but you can see what I'm talking about. GET fucking NOTICED!

There's a reason he left you off, whether it's money, time constaints or his restraining order on doompony. ;) If you try hard, he may change his mind and override that reason. Right now, no one is trying hard.

sorry but most nz bands will never make it to the stage where they make money. so yes i can say that they do it for the love of it. my friends band has been together since 1996, has number 1 singles, won all the music awards, toured extensively, moved to australia... all while holding down day jobs so they could continue to make music together because they love playing together.

anyway, this argument is clearly pointless. i know kiwi musos do it for the art and thrill of playing live. ed probably does too but gets to collect a nice pay cheque so not much point comparing them.

i think it's bullshit that he's not coming here. really do.
  • SpencerSpencer Posts: 867
Yeah, exactly. It's not as if Ed just plain forgot that New Zealand exists - it's either financially not worth the trouble or Ed just doesn't want to do more shows than he's already committed to.

It's not as though Ed has any kind of obligation to tour New Zealand and he's somehow lessened by deciding not to, whether that decision was made for financial and personal reasons. Plenty of artists only play Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne so he's already going above and beyond by playing Newcastle, Canberra, Adelaide and (now) Perth.

Nobody's entitled to an Ed solo show, I'm with Zig. If you want it, either make some noise about it or else accept that for whatever reason Ed isn't coming and either travel or just be happy for those who can make it.

...and there it is. It's easy to play music purely for the love of it if you have a day job. Music is Ed's day job, same as for any professional musician, that's where he makes the money to pay his bills, send his kids to school, etc.

We have no idea whether or not the decision not to come to NZ is financially motivated, but I don't think an explanation is owed in any case. It is what it is, you can't please all the people all of the time.

I'm very lucky that Ed's coming to Adelaide and I know it. If he wasn't, I'd either travel to Melbourne or just accept that I'd be sitting this tour out. I don't think it's fair to expect that Ed should play anywhere, y'know?

Pony, I know you're smart enough to get a decent petition going. YOU know it too. Team that with your artistic ability and it could be an awesome campaign!

So why don't you? What is holding you back from fighting for it?

missing the point. they have the day jobs because if they didn't they wouldn't eat. if they had the choice they'd be full time musos but it's not a reality.

and i've already said it's pointless to compare. pointless. which is why i said it was pointless.

anyways, i've wasted enough time. but i'd like to say that i resent the implication that i begrudge the australians the solo tour.
