  • Temple sold out the house (nice picture of if we ever managed to get into a good conference) and the first half was really great but the Cougars solved the Owls in the 2nd half. Maybe we'll get another crack in the conference tourney.

didn't see it but had SMU +2.5 so will take the win.  Seems like every Temple game is a close one.  Looks like the rest of us Temple will have to win the conference Tourney to get to the NCAAs.

Johnny what is your thoughts on McKie?   Want him to stay around or make a change if he doesn't make the tourney?
  • Not thrilled with the inconsistency but yeah I like the direction McKie is taking the program - we look more and more like Chaney's Owls. Team is still young.

Definitely have to win the last two regular season games then I'd say at least get to the Big East finals and play well (even if they lose might have an outside shot if they play competitively)

Well so much for that. Only way they are getting in is winning big east tournament and I can’t see that happening now.

It's a shame none of the other school could pick up the slack during a Nova down year. I have next to no interest in this tournament.

Closest "philly/home team" I guess is Penn State? They had a good run in the Big 10 tourny and almost beat Purdue in the finals.

First time since, what? 1977? That ALL City schools failed to qualify for the Tourney?

Schools like Nova(and MOST Big East schools) might be in big trouble sometime in the future because of the NIL.

Just one example(from a reliable source): Grady Dick(Kansas) visited Nova with his Dad and asked Nova about how much NIL he could get and was told $50-$100 Thousand. Well, he got 1/2-A-MILLION from Kansas. With NO Football money coming in it's has to hurt those schools?

The football money doesn't pay the NIL, though, right?
I'm still figuring out how it all works but I think it is local business market (some national) and rich alumni who foot the bills for this stuff.
Cannot believe none of these schools made it.  Came here is ask if that ever happened and I see 1977.  Damn.

No, I don't believe Football money pays NIL directly(MAYBE in a round-about way they do pay at some schools>LOL). We all  know Football generates the BIG Bucks and the Rich Alumni donate the Big Bucks to those schools. Small schools like Nova just won't be able to compete(like the example I gave).  Yes, some Local/National Companies are handing out these NIL Deals. A   HS basketball player near me signed a deal with Nike.

You know what schools aren't happy with the NIL? The one's who've been paying to get players for years>HA but probably true.

Not sure if I'll see it or not but I think the Mid-Major schools  in basketball will be almost extinct, because of the NIL. How long will that take, I don't know. Where do you think most of these kids will go? A school that can offer a $100,000 or a HALF MIL? A no-brainer for most.
  • A large issue.
Also reading that some kids get offered that sort of money to end up having it pulled if they don't play enough or well enough.

I guess apparently he was fired. I think it's dumb but it probably doesn't matter. Given all the reasons specified above along with our catastrophic conference situation.

NIL money is a general pool that can be used for all sports.

It’s donor based and not taken from any revenues generated by universities.

It’s also not to be used based on performance but we all know that’s exactly what’s happening.

I didn't know they pooled it.  They are set up differently according to each university, right?
I think some have multiple groups coming up with stuff?
I am interested but haven't taken the time to go further than random articles.

Baker Dunleavy is leaving his position as coach at Quinnipiac to become the general manager of basketball at Villanova, the school announced Thursday. Here’s what you need to know:

    • Dunleavy, a Villanova graduate who began his coaching career at his alma mater, spent six years as the head coach at Quinnipiac. The Bobcats recorded their best record this season, finishing 20-12 and 11-9 in the MAAC.
    • Dunleavy’s newly created position with the Wildcats will oversee the men’s and women’s programs’ NIL, transfer portal and brand marketing efforts.

    Backstory

Villanova is one of a collection of schools creating a GM position to help navigate the expanding world of college athletics as well as alleviate some of the head coaches’ duties. Duke, DePaul and Howard are among the schools that also have recently hired a GM.

Dunleavy played for Villanova from 2003 to 2006 and returned to the team in 2010 as director of basketball operations before rising to the role of associate head coach.

    What they’re saying

Villanova vice president and athletic director Mark Jackson: “The dramatic changes in college basketball over the past several years have brought new challenges and forced us to collectively think differently. I believe the creation of the GM role, particularly with Baker at the helm, positions Villanova well competitively for the future. It will allow Villanova to be even more forward-thinking and bring an innovative and seasoned perspective to the ever-evolving college basketball landscape. Most of all, Baker is a wonderful person and a great Villanovan.”

    Another Camden HS player.

I like Haskins and I think he'll improve over the years too.

I just saw him play again last night.

    https://www.on3.com/news/thomas-sorber-down-to-4-schools-georgetown-miami-providence-villanova/

Thomas Sorber, a four-star center in the class of 2024, has narrowed his list of schools down to four: Georgetown, Miami, Providence, and Villanova.

The 6-foot-9, 250-pound junior out of Philadelphia (Pa.) Archbishop Ryan has taken an official visit to Georgetown and an unofficial visit to Villanova.

According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Sorber ranks as the No. 67 overall prospect in the 2024 class. He’s also the nation’s No. 6 center and the No. 3 player in the state of Pennsylvania. On3’s evaluators are even high on Sorber, ranking him No. 51 nationally.

In an interview with On3, Sorber discussed each of his final four schools.

Thomas Sorber talks finalists, timeline for a decision

Georgetown: “I was recently on an official visit there. It went well. They showed me around the campus. They should me how their players live and stuff. It was nice. It was a nice, beautiful campus. They can help academically too. It’s a very smart school. Coach (Ed) Cooley is a great coach. I like how he uses his bigs. His assistants are great people, great people to talk to.”

Miami: “They are a great program. One of my old coaches is there (DJ Irving) so I have a relationship with the staff.”

Providence: “They’ve just been trying to build a great relationship with me. The staff has been recruiting me since they were at George Mason. They are trying to get me there badly.”

Villanova: “Nova is a great college near home for both basketball and academics. Growing up I was a big Nova fan, even before Jenkins hit the buzzer beater vs. UNC in the chip game.”

Sorber also has a loose timeline for a commitment.

“I plan to make my decision around September or October,” he says.

    Scouting Report

“The size stands out immediately with Thomas Sorber. At 6-9, pushing 6-10, he has long arms and big hands with a sturdy base. He carves out space very well on the block, setting up a big target and using his hips and feet to establish and maintain position. Sorber has good touch around the basket. He does a good job of using the rim to protect the ball when necessary or going straight up and dunking it with authority. Sorber is a good rebounder, doing his work early to establish position and using his length and strong hands to go up and get it. Want to see him extend his range more, be more consistent from the free throw line. He has lost considerable weight recently and you can tell in how he moves. There is more upside to go here, but he is already proving to be a force on the low block.” – On3’s Jamie Shaw
