The vid I saw, the way Eddie starts the song with that spin into it, I was waiting for the crowd to go mad. I didn't hear it and I thought maybe there were many that didn't know the song. It sounds like an unbelievable memory for you and those who knew just how special it was, he did it for the 'following fans' 8-)chiquimonkey wrote:

Pandora yeah that was definitely thrown in for the hardcores in the audience. Was so good

I don't get all the wigging out. Decent song but it doesn't really stand out compared to the rest of their catalogue does it? It's not bad but I wouldn't be freaking out if I heard it and I feel as though if any other band released this song, it would be considered very meh. I think most of the songs not previously played are that way for a reason and there was a reason it was relegated to Lost Dogs and not an album. I thought it was cool to hear Out of My Mind last year and Push Me, Pull Me but there was a reason they aren't played often. But that's just me. I would have been more jazzed by the RITFW with Neil.0

It does stand out to me, but that's the beauty of this band, how many songs they have that resonate with everyone! i.e. RITFW I've heard them do a few times, as well as with Neil, so I wouldn't have had the same reaction to thathopethatuchoke wrote:I don't get all the wigging out. Must admit - I had this thought too...
But rarities are always raved... After all, even flow is a great song, far superior but we've all heard it by now livehopethatuchoke wrote:I don't get all the wigging out. its a gift to us fans. any time we get to hear a song the band did the first time live is a gift. also, its a nod to Jeff who I believe wrote this beautiful song. What better tribute to someone by acknowledging his work and playing it live?
Thanks PJ for finally doing this song. Even if it never gets played again, thank you0 -

I'm sorry that I don't worship every song in their catalog. I think it's a substandard song compared to many others in their catalog. I guess I should have phrased it as a question....what makes this song great in some of your eyes? Was it the fact that it has never been played? Was it the lyrics? The riffs? I think someone just mentioned it was Jeff song which is probably why it doesn't click for me. I prefer Stone's songs but that's just me.
I remember being at State College when Satan's Bed was played for the first time in forever and I thought it was simply the greatest thing ever in spite of it being funked up completely. In hindsight, it was actually horrible but because I was there I thought it was awesome. I feel like maybe that could be the case here but again, I should have formed my response as a question.0 -
This is a song that I have no words to use to describe how incredible this song is TO ME! and apparently it is to some others, too. I THINK ITS FREAKING EVEN MORE FABULOUS that they DID IT LIVE! at BRIDGE!! and while I wasn't there to hear it live, I've had a chance to hear it and it sounded INCREDIBLE!! I wish I could find stronger words to express how I'm just blown away (yet again!!) by these guys! Great job & Thank you!Post edited by NoOne'sRival on"Dream the dream others then...you will be no one's RIVAL!"

I'll answer the question as to why it's great for me.
The first time I heard it was in 2002 and the lyrics stopped me dead in my tracks. I happen to love Jeff's songs so it wasn't too hard for me to dig it. When Lost Dogs came out and it was included, and reading Ed's description of it, it only made me fall in love with it even more.
The words have some deep resonance to me which is more of a personal thing, I'll keep that to myself. Since then it's been the song I've always wanted to hear.
The fact it was never played before really wasn't a factor for me. Wish it hadn't been the case really, because if anything it made it even harder to get at a show! I did hope deep down though if it was finally played that I'd be present for it, just because.
Compared to how Satan's Bed (another favorite of mine!) sounded at State College which sounded clunky and sloppy, their performance of Other Side was lovely, sounded like it had been rehearsed with some care.
There are many other songs I consider lesser compared to this one that others adore beyond anything, but again it's all personal opinion, art is subjective.
I'm just really happy to have heard it, and in such a setting with the timing of the anniversary and all too

I don't worship every song in their catalog either. But I understand that everyone has different tastes, likes and dislikes.
I can respect those opinions. As to the band playing rare songs, yes that is exciting. The brilliant music is a given, the energy, emotion, sweat and love that is put into each song is a given.
What is not a given is what the set list is going to be every night. That is one of the most interesting aspects of seeing Pearl Jam live.
If they did a canned show, it would be tighter, but I wouldn't go to 8 shows in a row as I did in 2006. (and would hope to again sometime in the future.)
It's the unpredictable nature that makes people excited above and beyond the music. So playing a rare song even if it isn't as 'popular' or 'good' is one of the things that makes this band what it is, and makes the concert going experience what it is.
Sure they could have inserted 'Given to Fly' into that spot in the set list. That would have been fun, as it was the other 19 times I heard it, but you know what, getting 'Other side' made me happier.
So it isn't just as black and white as this song is better than that one. There is another element in play.
The fact that you "don't get all the wigging out" is bizarre to me. And the fact that many of your posts are contrarian by nature is also bizarre to me.
But if it makes you happy to be that way then have at it.0 -

I don't know what is so hard to understand? I don't think it's a particularly good song therefore I don't get why people are freaking out about it. It's my opinion. I will compare it to Ed Hardy clothing....I think it's rubbish and I don't understand why people wear it. Would you question me questioning that? This is a discussion board so I was wondering why people enjoy it so much. Thank you for sharing why you cherish that song. And I appreciate you generalizing all of my posts. Am I critical? Yeah, I can be. I'm honest. This is a place to talk pearl jam and I talk all facets, be it something awesome or something bothering me. If you dislike them, you don't have to comment on them. I apologize if my post got you riled up. I'm not looking to piss off.0 -

No but if I was on an Ed Hardy fan site and you were expressing a negative opinion all the time, I would probably question why you bother showing up there.0 -

Well I don't like ANY Ed Hardy clothing. I love much of Pearl Jam's catalog. I don't always agree with their business practices or various other non-music things but I love 75% of their catalog. I guess I come from the tv news school of interest. There are plenty of feel good stories at nursing homes and cats in trees but I would rather discuss and watch coverage of a controversial event. I'm more inclined to join a conversation about high ticket prices than the anniversary of a show 14 years ago. I guess I can be negative, probably more negative than positive, but it's in the interest of discussion and maybe playing devils advocate sometimes. I didn't attack people for liking the song. I wondered why they do.0 -
