An interesting 48 hours is on Investigation Discovery right now in case anyone is interested. Also, on a side note. I just realize that I know the man who was the jury foreman in the case...oh my is all I have to say......He has more money than brains....

Thanks Kat - I just read about this on the Porch. Sounds an amazing and unexpected development. I don't want to speculate, but I will be following developments tomorrow.

If all three admit guilt to the brutal murders of Chris Byers, Michael Moore and Steve Branch
then the real killer/ killers can not be brought to justice :?
this would be a double injustice
I hope this is not the case
Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin should be exonerated
and charges brought up against those that the new evidence supports did the crime

No they were allowed to maintain their innocence, they just had to acknowledge that the prosecution may have evidence to retry them
just heard their convictions were overturned, what a feeling that must be for them.
Ok now they are saying they did have to plead guilty but still maintain their innocence??
They said it was a very complicated legal maneuver
one I'll never understand, but at least they're free
They plead innocent, but concede the fact that the prosecution had enough evidence to convict. Still not ideal, but who gives a crap? They are free, and that is ultimately what's important.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

Three boys are dead, if it's not the WM3 that did it, the killers need to be found, and sadly.........that will never happen.

I want to know if this crazy Alford Plea (versus having the verdict rightfully overturned) will prevent the three INNOCENT men from suing the State for the 20 years they lost....
What?! Fucking CNN cut the live feed RIGHT when Eddie was about to greet Damien! And one of the local stations keeps calling him, "Eddie Vedder, formerly of Pearl Jam." :x

It does. Most of the time these types of pleas are done BEFORE trial to lessen the sentence of the accused. I have seen people get life sentences after this type of plea (to avoid death penalty). For them, I'm sure it was the choice of this or more drawn out proceedings. And, I can't say I blame them.
It's a terrible story all around - the 3 boys, the 3 wrongly convicted and the real perpetrator(s) remaining free. And, while it's nice to be idealistic - all things considered, I think they had to take this deal. Would you want to wait around in jail/death row for another year, 2, 3 to be fully exonerated?
One does have to wonder if the State did make some sort of monetary concessions as part of the deal (to go along with the gag order).

I think so.. you have to wonder what's going on here, although this deal seems pretty consistent with the overall miscarriage of justice that has been the hallmark of this case.
I haven't posted in Moving Train in... a lot of years... so forgive me if I come across as being naive, but someone smarter than me might be able to explain this through.
Why WOULD you plea out to get out of jail? This strikes me as something along the lines of a CWOF for a misdemeanor, no? Where you admit to sufficient facts and then just have the case sort of follow you around as your one get out of jail free card. Or not. I'm not sure.
With the WM3 though, either they deserve to be in jail or not. Either yes they horribly killed those 3 boys or they didn't (I happen to think they didn't). This deal yeah, gets them out of jail- which is good- but ultimately doesn't it let the prosecutors get away with- what?
Unclear.
"If you're looking for someone to pull you out of that ditch, you're out of luck."
These guys are lucky to have such supportive people in their corner, I hope if this ever happened to me or someone I love...wow, mind blowing. I'm so glad Vedder watches documentaries...
Now may they find the real Perpetrator/s and get justice for those poor little boys.

Crazy, but it doesn't matter. They are free-that's all that matters.

This plea, while freeing three boys I feel are innocent just works to further victimize them and the three boys that lost their lives. This case is officially closed, DNA evidence found at the crime scene can not be used to bring real justice to the families, and the WM3 cannot bring a suit against the state of Arkansas for the horrible mishandling of this crime. UGH FUCKITY UGH.
deep thoughts here and a question:
perceptions are powerful. these boys were scapegoats on some level. i've been battling people's perceptions all my life. I'm a person with a disability. when does doing what you please and not caring what others think turn into society frowning upon you and threat of attack/shun because you are different? i mean we've all heard, oh just be yourself? who cares what they think? at what point does this become not true? it does matter what 'they' think of you at some point.

Here is a good interview with Jason. It brings tears to my eyes seeing him walking a free man around downtown Memphis. Sorry to get sappy, but this is so awesome for those men. Anyway, here is the link: http://www.wmctv.com/story/15302297/jas ... of-freedom
