South Africa cricketer Herschelle Gibbs defended his controversial autobiography on Monday, calling the description of drinking, drugs and sexual antics on cricket tours an "open and honest account" of his 14 years with the national team.
Gibbs said he had not "targeted" any of his teammates in his book "To The Point," which also says current captain Graeme Smith was "simply too powerful" and was part of a "clique" of senior players that included Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher and AB de Villiers.
The book addresses Gibbs' battle with alcohol and a stint in rehabilitation, his marijuana smoking on a tour to the West Indies, and a six-month ban in 2000 for his part in a match-fixing scandal that surrounded the late South Africa captain Hansie Cronje - which Gibbs told AP was the biggest regret of his career.
There are also details of sexual escapades between South African players and local girls, and in some cases group sex in hotels, on a tour to Australia in 1997-1998.
But, it's Gibbs' opinion on the role of Smith and the other senior players under former Proteas coach Mickey Arthur that has created tensions between the 36-year-old opening batsman and his fellow cricketers.
"When you're that forthcoming and honest you are bound to face that sort of criticism. I've been that honest. It's not surprising," Gibbs said at the book's launch at a Johannesburg restaurant.
"That particular clique of Graeme and Mark and Jacques, and to a certain extent AB, were very outspoken when Mickey was coach.
"I've made it clear in the book that I thought that around Graeme, Mickey buckled a little bit. That's how I saw it."
Gibbs said Smith had sent him a message earlier on Monday to ask him if he really thought he was "too powerful."
"My answer to him was it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out," Gibbs said.
Smith, who is leading South Africa in an ongoing series against Pakistan, said on Sunday the players were "very disappointed" with the revelations by the 36-year-old Gibbs, who was not included in the squad.
Gibbs said he expected criticism, but "hopefully people can respect the honesty."
His book was about "the issues that have made headlines for the right and wrong reasons," he said.
"I've been very open and honest about the whole thing. I knew from the start that it would get a lot of criticism, so be it. I've enjoyed the experience."
At least one senior player "had voiced his huge disappointment about the book," Gibbs said, and had told the author he would support any possible disciplinary action by national federation Cricket South Africa against him.

from a new south welshman, i'd expect more respect for sarfraz. you got a short memory or maybe just havent watched enough cricket. he didnt debut until he was 30.
won man of the series in his debut test series. took 20 wickets @ 15 in sth africa. (inc 9 on debut).
then helped us win the ashes with 26 wickets @ 17.
had a few more respectable series until he got injured. basically he was a late bloomer whose body gave up, as fast bowlers do after about 33yo. took 94 wickets @ 24 in 24 tests.
mcgrath the legend took 563 over 124 tests @ 22.
btw that one dayer was piss funny. this australian team culture is laughable. we'll get shat on in the ashes.
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.
That was one of those not quite sure what to do matches. Bowling Clarke for the last over wasnt the right thing though. That Matthews is a gun. Not much Australia could have done
Im going to the match on Friday, better be a goodie.

I've watched plenty of cricket, and I didnt bad mouth him. He was good, but you can not dispute 5th test of Ashes he was rubbish.
Mcgrath is a great. He is the best quick I have seen. In 50 years time I will most probably be telling my grandkids (if I have em) about the great Glenn Mcgrath, like my grandfather told me of the Chapels, Simpson and the like. Am I going to be talking about Clark? Probably not.
Fords a good car, I drive one, but Mcgrath was something special.
Almost like comparing Hauritz and Warne.
(But Clark is a better bowler than hauritz ever will)

he bowled average after not playing the first 3 tests but there were far more important "non performers" than that! ha hauritz. he's never won us a game, or taken a bag, or got man of the series. fuck how much do we need a spinner? or a fast bowler... or a middle order batsman...
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.
Angelo Matthews every shot was a cricket shot ..malinga should take up baseball swing swing but what a game ..i cant remember watching a odi game that you could not step away from for even a second..
this will do your confidence no good at all...played 9 lost 9  has that ever happened before..
friday is huge for you..
but what a ground melbourne looks on tv stunning we could do with something like that .lords and the oval have the history but not that feel..
and mcg wouldnt have even been a quarter full. Watch boxing day test. It will be xmas day for you. But it will be about 100,000 people there for day one. SCG will get 45-50,000 (not quite sure of new capacity) for the new years test.
Oh and in Clarks defence, from memory he did well in the 4th test. I wish the Aussies stuck with Krezja a little longer. Granted he went missing in shield cricket, but 2 tests for the success he had seems odd. I reckon he must have porked punters mrs or something not to get selected again.
I just hope Doherty plays well. He looked good, good variation in speed, and flight, bit of turn and bounce. But that was the first time I have seen him. Too early to label him the messiah. Plus always good to have a bowler who turns the ball away from the right hander. offies at times can be easily played to the on-side.

yeah doherty was great he was 4 -15 at one point ..but his best work was the run out. stunning fielding to get Tharanga.
johnson was crap..not seen him that bad before .5 wides. the one off his last over summed his day up first ball.. put back on to get a wicket then bowls a wide ..then hit for a 6 back over his head..
clarke should have more faith in his bowling his 6 balls looked like getting a wicket more then the other bowlers at that stag of the game .
shame smith got hurt or you might have won the game.
Its funny cause Johnson can be shit, then just bowls a pearler.
I got to say, Malinga is a much better player than what I remember him. Did you see his slower ball bouncers, they were genius. They couldnt hit them. His batting, wow, he isn't a good batsman though, just got lucky, but good on him.
Good to see Hussey got a few runs. I think it is time that Australia actually play a full strength team. Bring in Ponting, Hilf, I think Bollinger is under an injury cloud. But they need to get some momentum, and going into the Ashes with no momentum could cost us big time.

Another couple observations, just saw the news article.
I would like Doherty to play (providing that wasnt a once in a blue moon performance) he averages 48 in 1st class though, but who knows he might have had a slow start. Hauritz averages 35 in tests.
but he bowled Sangakara around his legs. Two plum lbws, and caught at mid on which is a classic spinners dismissal. Leaving mid on up, encourage to hit over the top against the spin. (with my offies, I kept mid off up, mid on back try and temp em, I got like a thrid of my wickets caught at mid off)
Sri Lanka are actually a great side. They have been shit for years, they may well win world cup next year.

from a new south welshman, i'd expect more respect for sarfraz. you got a short memory or maybe just havent watched enough cricket. he didnt debut until he was 30.
won man of the series in his debut test series. took 20 wickets @ 15 in sth africa.
Im going to the match on Friday, better be a goodie.

Plus always good to have a bowler who turns the ball away from the right hander. offies at times can be easily played to the on-side.

johnson was crap..not seen him that bad before .5 wides. the one off his last over summed his day up first ball.. put back on to get a wicket then bowls a wide ..then hit for a 6 back over his head..
clarke should have more faith in his bowling his 6 balls looked like getting a wicket more then the other bowlers at that stag of the game .
shame smith got hurt or you might have won the game.
