KeeeeeeeeeREIST, I'm wondering how comfortable its going to be sleeping on top of the bed in a garbage bag.
Ugh. I guess not going to sleep is always an option in NYC! ;-)
I think you have to see the problem from the perspective of the bug: it craves for warmth and carbon-dioxide.
Basically all you have to do is not breath any, and go cold. The tricky part is to do that between midnight and dawn and still wake up afterward - apart from that you'll do fine

Bed bugs dont live on your body like lice or scabies.... they hide in furniture until it's dark, come out, suck your blood and scurry back into their dwellings. They initally sting you with a numbing thingy they have and then when you are nice and numb they suck your blood!
Enjoy the show!
 I'd rather have a hot vampire in my room!
Well just to be safe I might bring my sleep sack I bought for when I would go hostelling. We'll see what happens!
Yeah...see I'm just sitting here at my desk, and I'm already feeling like bugs are crawling on me by reading this thread. Plus I just got a vision of one crawling in the warmth of my EAR and leaving a trail of grub babies. I think when I arrive I will saran wrap the bed and sleep on top in a rain suit with all the entry points taped shut. I suppose I'll have to leave my mouth free, but may sleep at a 45 degree angle in hopes of confusing the odd one that can escape the bed wrap.

They could still crawl in though I think. I know, I'm terrible! But I take bugs seriously! I think it would be more important to be sure that your sleep sack is bagged up in plastic before bringing it home, and then either discarding it or throwing it straight into a hot washer.
I'm not so bothered about bedbugs in the city but I just want to be sure I don't bring any home - that's the main thing.

That's really my issue too. I guess i'll just have deal with the bugs if there are any. (i'll have myself all worked up and paranoid and i'll probably end up sleeping in a garbage bag) I just don't want to bring them back home in my luggage. I've heard horror stories from people who've had bedbugs and they've had to throw out furniture and leave their houses for days!

Yeah, you know despite this conversation, I haven't SEEN any, and I've stayed in a variety of places in the city the last few years. Even some cheaper places. I believe someone mentioned the Pod hotel? I've stayed there and it was fine, and actually the bathrooms were pretty cool (one of those shared bathroom hotels). The Carter hotel sucked though. Bedbugs would be the least of your worries there. The room I was in in that had graffiti on the walls and one bare light bulb hanging down and frayed wires on the back of the TV. (It wasn't my choice to stay there - I got diverted from somewhere else that was having water problems)

That's the same place i have booked too! Although, i've been looking around at other hotels.
I'm staying alone for the 3 nights there. Once I saw how close it was, and at a reasonable price, i got in. I've never been to the East Coast of the USA, and alone, so why not. Gotta enjoy life sometime!

Few of us going from Halifax. When are you arriving?
I am staying at the Latham Hotel, I know is not the best, but is the one I was able to afford and I got it for $99.00 at priceline with a private bath (hopefully).
I am only staying for one night, and my sister didn't seem to care much about the place. I am hoping and "praying" that I will have have no problems!!!
Is anyone else staying there???
"makes much more sense, to live in the present tense"

Staying at the Holland Motor Lodge in Jersey - no MSG tickets yet though (but still hoping ;=) - cheap, but very good reviews on tripadvisor.

Hope the bugs are kept to a minimum.
