I think I may have to pick up these books, especially since they are a quick read. I usually don't do much leisure reading during grad school semesters, but I may have to make an exception.

What age are these geared towards? My 10yr old has mentioned them.

They are geared towards "young adults". I have a 10 year old daughter and after I read it, I gave it to her to read. She really enjoyed the book and read it in about a week. She has since moved on to the second book, Catching Fire.

There is some violence in the books, but I wouldn't say it is anymore violent than the Harry Potter books/movies.

Planning on ducking out to catch the movie during the first matinee next Friday. 8-)

Tore through the first book, listened to the second on Audible (very well read) and last night started "Mockingjay."

    I am loving this series.

I would say, though, that it's more explicitely violent than Harry Potter, which could be disturbing for younger children. Lots of descriptions of injuries and wounds and fatalaties. To a level of detail that JK Rowling didn't go into with HP.

I would say it's more like a teen version of Game of Thrones. Violent, bloody, but with a bit of teenage angst as well.

I don't see a really obvious connection between it and LOTR, though.

Having said all that, I would still let younger kids read it because my parents never censored my reading, and it was perfectly fine with them that I read "Carrie" when I was about 10. (That book bothered me only in one way _ I was a bit of a late bloomer, and for the next five years I was terrified that when I got my period, I'd spontaneously hemorrhage the way Carrie did.)

    :?

Not a spoiler here, but wait until you see the body count in the 3rd book.

Hehe, good! These books go really quick, although she crams a lot of stuff into the 3rd book. I heard the 3rd book was probably going to be split into 2 movies. Enjoy!

I feel so bad that I finished the Mockingjay on my own. But the books are so good that I will be happy to read them again :D. I will give LOTR a try as well.

i'm reading Game of Thrones (on book 2 now) ... couldn't wait for the library as I was 123 out of 127 on the waiting list ... ... so, just bought them ...

for LOTR - i would recommend reading the hobbit first ... its a short read ... then, be prepared for the first third of Fellowship of the Ring ... it's brutal ... but once you get passed that - it's pretty good ...

I never actually read the hobbit. I just can't get myself to pick it up....but loved Lotr, game of thrones...hunger games. Weird. It was a lot of skimming in the beginning of fellowship though!

Just finished the 3rd book yesterday. I thought that the trilogy as a whole was great. Mockingjay kinda dragged through the first 2/3 of the book, but got really good at the end. Looking forward to the movies...

Yes, the third book is has way more violence than the first two. And I do agree with you Unlost that the detail of the injuries and fatalities is mlore explicit than Harry Potter. I guess I was comparing the amount of death/violence and not necessarily the details.

She is excited to see the movie - but understands that the movie will not do it justice.

I'm excited to see it. Jennifer Lawrence is great. Her performance in Winter's bone sold me on her as an actress. I hope she makes a lot of money on movies like this and x-men and then goes and does some good indie films like Winter's again

  • I am not aware of this movie or the book at all but a parent called the office this morning complaining that some students from local junior high are on a field trip today which will include seeing the movie. While her child was not among those included in the trip, he said numerous other parents were not pleased with this. I see its rated PG-13 so I figure these will be eighth grade students attending.....and the parents would've had to sign releases for them to go on the trip in the first place....but is there really an issue here?

When I read the books a few years ago I remember thinking, "wow, this is really violent!". And when they announced they were making a movie, I really wasn't sure how they were going to do it. I've seen the movie but won't say anything because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

BUT her first series of books I think would be perfect for your 10-year old (although I'm sure it wouldn't go well for you to say, maybe not the Hunger Games but read these other books instead :lol::lol: ). Underland Chronicles are for younger kids and I love those books probably more than the Hunger Games trilogy :D Definitely check them out.
