Wow. Watch the '65 Tour Documentary; its cool to hear how/why Dylan wrote "When The Ship Comes In." Gives you a new appreciation for the lyrics.

I just grabbed Bootleg Series 4: Live in NYC 1964 with Joan Baez -- I love these pre-Vietnam War protest songs. His best protest songs were all written before the escalation of the war.

  • In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair

Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break

In the fury of the moment, I can see the master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand

Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yester year
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
Then the sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay

I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey, I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand

I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintery light
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face

I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all

its like picking a favorite child. the guy has 500 plus songs in his catalogue, 40 plus albums, and nearly every single one are top notch.

Boots of spanish leather is gorgeous. all the well known protest songs continue to inspire activists 40 years plus after they were recorded because of how well he wrote them. Hattie Carroll is devastating.

    Definitely tough.

I really love A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall for his protest songs.

    Definately Lay Lady Lay,
Beautiful and sad, I love a song about unrequited love or being the 'other' man or woman.

    Lay, Lady, Lay

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I’ll show them to you and you’ll see them shine

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Until the break of day, let me see you make him smile
His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean
And you’re the best thing that he’s ever seen

Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he’s standing in front of you

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
“ "Thank you Palestrina. It’s a wonderful evening, it’s great to be here and I wanna dedicate you a super sexy song." " (last words of Mark Sandman of Morphine)

SO many great songs to choose from, but first Dylan song I ever heard was Mr. Tambourine Man so it has special significance for me!

Currently obsessed with this song and verse:

"Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin’ ship
My senses have been stripped, my hands can’t feel to grip
My toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin’
I’m ready to go anywhere, I’m ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way
I promise to go under it"

If someone tells me there's a better lyricist than Bob, I'll have to fight them.
