Yeah! I'm in Illinois, where it is ILLEGAL to practice as a CPM. Hoping that legislation changes that this Fall and I will start my schooling!
For now, I love all the CNM's I get to work along side bringing beautiful babies in the world.
Eyed, since I give mama's a lot of informational support, I will be sure to tell them about the acid mines. You should set up a website.
Wow, thats insane! I'm in Australia, and in public hospitals registered midwives care for about 70-80% of birthing women. Some women utilize the private system and employ their own OB, but even then the midwives are doing the majority of the labour and birth care. The doctors sometimes wander in at the last minute to catch the baby, then off they go again.
It is getting really tricky over here to work as an independant midwife, new legislation is aiming to make homebirth effectively illegal. Australia will then hold the disgraceful honour of being the ONLY country in the world to have outlawed it. Absolutely disgusting in light of the fact that ALL of the research points towards homebirth for low risk women being as safe, if not safer, than hospital birth.
Here's hoping you are able to start you schooling and be on your way towards midwifery, although as far as I am concerned, doulas are worth their absolute weight in gold! They offer a level of support that we midwives often find difficult to do in a busy birth suite. We are governed by hospital protocols and policies that we must adhere to, in spite of a LOT of it not being evidenced based care. Fortunately for me at this stage, I am working in a level 1 hospital, which is all low risk, and offers the opportunity to practice as closely to my own philosophy about birth as I am gonna get outside of the home based setting.
All the best to you!

Yesterday I was a Russian Spy Hunter. Didn't see any at the pub, we are all safe.
