Problems with the Stickman Tat?

I just don't get it. Why do people on here have such a problem with the stickman tat? I understand that "everyone" has it and the whole thing with Dave A- but the stickman symbol is Pearl Jam- like it or not.

If I ever decide to get a tat, it will be the stickman. Does that make me less of a fan or a "bandwagon" fan? I don't think so.

i think a lot of people have a problem being mainstream, which is a reason why they like pearl jam; the band isnt mainstream, so youre gonna get a lot of people that think they think outside the box. that and theres a ton of people who think that getting a tattoo, which will stay on your body forever, should be something unique and different than what other people's tattoos are and something that says a lot about you. a lot of people on this board and other pj boards think that people should design their own tat instead of getting a logo.

personally i think that people should get something personal and not just another logo, however if the stickman encompasses everything about the band you love and means a lot, go for it.

i am not disagreeing with your post at all. i think that you hit it right on the head. but, i do think it is funny that people that are pearl jam fans still think that they aren't mainstream. hell my dad, who only listens to country music, knows who they are. and when they tour they aren't playing the little clubs. they are selling out the big arenas. they are mainstream folks. if you don't believe me just play betterman in a group setting and see how many people can sing along.

    agree with above ^^

tatts are / or should be / very personal things. its a mark of you, or something you believe very strongly about if you will.
personally i'd hate to run around with something (say off the tatt shop wall) or something that 10000 other people had.

given that tho - my pj tatt is a logo, and i have seen two others on tattooeverything, in different body locations, and slightly different designs.

and the second one im planning on - two others here have, although again, mine is in a very different place and a different swing on the original design.

*shrug* its a unique thing, so perhaps it should be unique to you - but its up to you too. If you dont mind sharing, than stickman is fine

hey i never thought of that.. well, i do think that theyre less popular than a lot of other bands like radiohead and foo fighters and whatever. i had a guy in my class listen to small town and he A) never heard of it and B) thought it was a country song (though i couldnt blame him..)

  • I'm guessing that there's just some people who are so nonconformist, that when they see a lot of anything, they automatically go against it. I apply this when it comes to ten bashing. (By the way, I don't think all of you who do not like ten solely because it's the most popular album.)

But I'm getting the green disease skull. And fuck whoever thinks it's lame. I don't.

go for it! who cares what anybody else thinks.

I got mine done about 10 years ago and have not once regreted getting it, i still listen to thier music most days and probably will forever.

a very small amount of people around the world will know what it means and what it is. you probably wont see another one around until you go to the next pj gig.

I love the stickman.. Do what you want and get tats of whatever you like. Why would you care if someone differs in opinion? It's not going on their body, it's yours.

I have no problem with people having it. I just mentioned it because years ago the BAND had a big problem with it. Don't forget that it's the BAND that is anti-commercialism, even more than any of their fans. One of the reasons they hated Dave A was because he embraced the attention and enjoyed it. Although my theory is that they actually kinda miss all that chaos now that they've been left alone for a few years. They promoted Avocado quite a lot with interviews, TV appearances, etc. For instance, they would NEVER have done something like those AOL Sessions 5 or 6 years ago.

As far as Dave A, if people dislike the tattoo because he got it, well that's just stupid. Why do people even hate Dave A anyway? I think he was great in Pearl Jam. They say he was too flashy but the real reason they don't like him is because the band didn't like him. Personally I think the way the band treated him was totally ridiculous bullshit. All Eddie wanted was to have Jack Irons in the band, probably just because he was well-known and well-respected. It had nothing to do with the way Dave played or how Jack played. Personally, I think Jack sucks on anything that he didn't play on originally. All the songs from Ten and Vs. lost their power with Jack on drums. Anyway, I digress...

It's a cool little design... and seriously, what does it matter.
    ...
The thing I would have about it... the future.
I mean, I'm sure getting that 'Poison' logo tattooed on your body sounded fuckin' Rad in 1985... but... it didn't wear too well. And we never know what the future holds in store. I mean... there was a time when Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney were cool. Sure, the music is still good... but these guys are kinda tools, now. I'm not saying Eddie Vedder is going to be a dick like McCartney... but, remember, all your past greatness can be lost in a moment. If you don't believe me... ask Bill Buckner.

I will most likely be getting a PJ tattoo and im pretty positive it will be the stickman. I thought of many other possiblities but none of them interested me enough. the stickman is just so damn cool looking and simple...you can't go wrong with it. Plus i'm going to have a quote underneath it to make it personal.

Did you know Ed has that on his leg too?

I don't have any tats, but I'm not going to let someone else having it or not having it drive my decision. Basically it should just be something I like and has meaning to me, regardless of whether 10,000 other people have it or no people have it.

If I am ever to get a PJ tatoo it would either be a design of the words "Pearl Jam", "PJ" or the stickman..

Screw everyone else, I think the stickman rules.

Yes. The idea that a band that has sold 60 million records and has been called by some publication "the greatest american rock band of all time" isn't mainstream is just silly :) Just because they are not as popular as they once were doesn't mean they aren't mainstream.

You know what was great. I was driving down the freeway in San Diego on the way to Ed's show and I saw 4 different stickman window stickers and two different personalized Pearl Jam license plates within a few minutes. I flashed a couple people my Into the Wild CD cover and got thumbs up. It was like a rolling army of fans.

I don't have a problem with other people having it; I don't really have a problem with anyone having any tattoo, just personally it's not my favorite design, and I would much rather come up with my own design, which I've been in the process of doing for the past year or so, which is basically a way to make sure that my tattoo will be unique, and that it will have meaning to me on multiple levels. That being said, it's your body, do what you want with it and do what makes you happy.

I have a stickman tat and I love it. No regrets. The first time I saw that logo when I was in college I said that if I ever got a tattoo that would be it. Many, many years later when i actually went to get the tattoo I still felt the same about it. :)

personally it's my least favorite pearl jam logo... idk something about it i just don't care for too too much... i think people's problem w/ stickman tats are that almost all PJ tatoos are of the stickman so it's kind of boring and tiring... at least that's how I see it, but if you like it, who are we to judge.

You're getting a permanent mark on your body. That should mean something to you and noone else. So who gives a flying f*** what ppl think?!

To me the stickman represents PJ from their very beginning, their first single, all the good times that I've had with them, one really bad experience that I had with them and how both the good times and the bad has shaped me through the years. The fact that others have it, just means that we're all a part of the "jammily" and that we can relate to eachother.

Getting mine done on tuesday and I will still love it and think back on my youth when I'm 60.

I have two tats already, my third is going to be of the Pearl Jam stickman. With my own twist though. Personally I think tattoos should mean something, I have a friend who got a butterfly inked on her calf because she likes butterflies, no other reason than that. Cool with me, it's her body.

Back to my stickman tat, my sister was killed last year by a drunk driver, since music has always been a big part of my life, and an even bigger part now in my ongoing grieving/healing process I'm going to get the stickman with wings and a halo with my sister's initials. Hoping to get it done by the end of summer when funds allow.

To the original poster, get whatever you want wherever you want, if anyone has a problem with it F-em!
