If 2010 is like 2009, like LA3 2009 for example, I think LA3 2009 is incredible sounding.
Europe 2000 sound stunk because it was mixed too low. It was like someone whispering.
USA 2000 sound stunk because I think it was crowd mic'd and didn't even use the soundboard. Laughing, talking, too much crowd, and the guitars and bass were mud. Ed was mixed very low. The bass was nonexistent. Seattle, night 1 probably the worst. Also, 2000 USA, the band sounded like they were not over Rokslide, tired, depressed, etc.
2003 saw a huge improvement in sound quality however the upper midrange was way too high in many cases. That gave me listening fatigue where present. The feeling like there was water in my ears when there wasn't. There was great instrument separation. Much more bass. Huge improvement over 2000 but hit and miss. Places like Atlanta, Champaigne, especially good sound.
2005/2006 were not mixed well. Period. hard to describe. And having to set up a labratory and factory to get what I once got in a bag was a tremendous headache.
I love the 2009/2010 sound. I would rather hear the band clearly, well mixed, etc., than hear the crowd, echo and mud.
Don't get me wrong. If the band didn't release bootlegs and these 2000 shows were people's crowd tapes, I would be saying how great they sound. But when the band officially offers them for sale, I'm looking for live album quality. I think in 2010, they've achieved that.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

I dont have any of the boots yet but Ive been listening to PJ radio and all I have to say is that you people need to stop complaining. theres nothing wrong with any of these boots. geez
The guitars sound like ass and the mix is way off. When Mike or Stone solos, you should be able to hear them. That's not too much to ask, especially since these 2010 boots are not "live" mixes, they are mixed in a studio after the fact, so there is no excuse for it. I find it interesting that Brett's "live" mixes were so well balanced, but now that they're mixing them later in a studio, they can't get the mixes right. IMO it's time to get a new mixing engineer.
The subject line says it all. These boots are horrible. I actually get a headache after a few seconds. Speaking as someone who make a double-disc record and went through lots of learning curves and instant headaches, I think these 2010 boots aren't mastered correctly. I am going to request a refund because I can't listen to these new ones.
Now it seems apparent why the Spectrum boots took so long to drop. Seriously. Listen to one minute of one of the Spectrum boots and then one minute of Boston or MSG from 2010 and then listen back to a Spectrum song. (Why won't PJ or 10C hire an amazing sound technician?) With time, you'll notice the difference more and more, but it's clear to me the boots from the 2010 shows are suffering — and severely. Why relisten if I get a headache within seconds. (It's all about sound frequencies.)
These 2010 boots are by far the worst I've ever heard. Bring back the guy or gal who recorded the ones in 2003.
OK OK...stop by the house and pick up your pseudo street cred... Just don't try to spend it locally..
The 2010 bootlegs are good. They aren't great. I've been listening to a lot of the 2000 boots lately and they are spectacular. Listening to Mansfield #44 right now and "Black" literally couldn't sound better. With that being said... We are witnessing a band that is playing better and manufacturing setlists that are better now than they have been in years. I saw a recent post asking to name your the best shows you have been too and the majority of shows listed came from the 06-2010 range. Right or wrong, that is an incredible testament to this band. I realize that the bootlegs may not show that with their recent quality, but for those who attend, we know how great they sound. Eddie sounds as good now as he did in these 2000/03 boots. Thats what matters.
I would love for the '10 boots to sound like the '00 boots but they don't. I will still listen to them frequently and enjoy reliving past experiences or listen to shows I wish I could have attended. I believe everyone has a right to question the quality of products they purchase, and well done for addressing it publicly, but I am satisfied. Thank you Pearl Jam for giving us the opportunity to listen to what we wished we could have seen and/or saw

Sadly, I have to agree. I listened to the MSG shows today, and I have to say that the quality is really sub-par compared to some of the boots in year's past. There are moments where Mike's guitar is almost inaudible or is just completely hidden, and the overall quality is just not there. I know these are live shows and that sometimes quality can be hard to come by, but I have to believe that they can do better than this. And for the record, I listened to these in FLAC and still felt the quality was subpar so that really has nothing to do with it.
To be fair however, I don't think they'll ever satisfy everybody. Some shows which I think sound incredible, people complain about the bass being way down or the drums sounding tinny. I don't require much when it comes to sound, but I have to say the boots I've listened to so far from this tour have not been their best. The band sounds great though.

As a consumer, I have the right to complain about a product when the product doesn't measure up to products I bought in the past from that company, which is Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam is making money by selling bootlegs. Don't act as if they are giving you bootlegs for free — and you are, oh, so thankful. I have to say the Pearl Jam-is-perfect ideology on this board is upsetting. If Pearl Jam's taught us anything, it's not to accept things as they are — it's to fix things. Perhaps that thought is lost on some of you. Peace.
I like this board and I love Pearl Jam but I completely agree with this.
I entirely agree as well, but think a lot of people here could try and learn how to register a complaint in less close-ended or offensive manners.

Second, throw on some Bon Jovi or Nickleback.....then stop and realize what horrible music you are listening to
Third, listen again to any 2010 PJ boot....then, stop complaining and realize what a great band PJ is for releasing every show on their tour for their fans, even their whiny ones.
The sound at the Newark gig is terrible, but maybe it was that at the gig and not only the boot. Sounds like the play in an empty garage with the mics 10 feet away.
Thank you! The sound there was horrendous. All treble, terrible low end sound. Jeff was not into that one. Probably because you couldn't hear any of his cords (see Inside Job)........
The sound comes off as shrill and harsh. It doesn't sound pleasant. Re: sound frequencies — adjustments over the the three main ranges can help improve sound.
Listen, just compare a 2000 or 2003 boot with this one. The headaches I speak of happened with repeated work with horribly mastered or unmastered music.
as a health care professional i think you need to consider something other as a cause for your headaches.
granted the sound may be not perfect. it's far from terrible or headache inducing.
as it's been said over and over, they are bootlegs why should they sound perfect. at least it's not like the days of old and trading tapes

I couldn't agree with you more, it's like people are scared on this board to say anything negative or controversial. Which is the exact opposite of what the band stands for and believes in!
I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed in the way the 2010 boots sound from what I've listened to so far. MSG 2 is a great show but honestly it sounds like shit. I don't understand why ten years ago they could make a bootleg sound sooooo much better.

Glad that I am not the only one who feels that way. I have enjoyed every bootleg to date until Newark. It sounds like complete ass. Like the guys were just making the motions and the tempo was slow the whole way through and the sound of the bootleg was just terrible. Other than Newark though, I have enjoyed every boot.

That's why I am thinking more and that this seems to be the case of an engineer that needs work. I am really bummed out about this years boots. I have all right now, and I listened to Newark today and had to turn it off cuz it was so bad. It sounds like the show was recorded outside the venue. Very hollow. The vocals being the worst. And everything else second. It's really too bad as the setlist is really one of the better ones from this tour. I couldn't be more discouraged. Ugghh! Later
well, i ordered and paid for the entire 2009 box set and an additional box set of the philly boots on May 5th and for a total purchase of $455 and i still have not received a single thing. talk about frustrating. at least you have some "sound quality" to judge.........
Problem: Listening to the 140th Pearl Jam bootleg and not enjoying it as much as the first time you heard the 10th bootleg.
Solution: Go to a store or Itunes and buy a CD from a band you haven't listened to before. Hell, buy a CD and listen to something besides Pearl Jam.
It's not the amount of shows that I listen to that makes me not enjoy a particular bootleg. That doesn't even make sense. I've listened to well over a 140 shows and if anything I think that qualifies me to say what ones sound great and what ones sound like shit!
So listening to a different band or CD will make the 2010 bootlegs sound better?

I'm confused...doesn't it matter at all what a person is listening ON? What gear is providing the sound that one doesn't care for...or that one loves and thinks is perfect?
And this is not official at all...it's just me...a music lover.

the only 2010 boot i got was msg 2 cuz i was there, and mike sounds like he's in the next room while the rest of the band sounds like they're right there. not sure if its my car stereo or the settings or what but thats the first time i've experienced that.
My favorite Pearl Jam song: "Corporate Greed Boat Asshole Behind a Counter in the Oval Office"
play the bootlegs on a good radio, turn it up, and it sounds great.
and heres the sound expert himself. lets give a round of applause to the sound expert.
again it doesn't matter if you listen to it on a good system or a ipod. if jeff is high one minute and then low the next minute to the point where you cant hear him you can't do shit to change that now can you. the mixing has sucked since 00, period end of story.

I haven't found the boots as nice to listen to so far....they do appear to be "tinny"... but to be fair I haven't really sat down and listened with any great attention to any one show concert yet... and I totally agree that it's down to the individual...time place and setting can have an enormous difference in an individuals listening experience...what you are listening through comes after these factors.... I like FLAC....it's probably a placebo thing...are my ears any good?...who's to say? I don't know...

Quit listening to them as condensed mp3s. The ones I ordered as hard copy sound great! And to echo a previous comment, they are live recordings and not studio.
As someone who attended the KC show this year, the bootleg sounds great.
what you said.... just got done listening to MSG 2.... sounded fine to me....

I'm not going to say any of these songs are unlistenable but I have to agree with metsfan's statement above. There are some songs where drums are in front, then drums disappear, then drums appear, then drums disappear. I am not an expert by any means - I am an average listener. I have found myself straining to hear Stone or even Ed sometimes or realizing "wow - I never heard that bass line before" becuase the mix is not blended to sound normal. It's not a preference thing of which member I want to hear on a boot, it's wanting to hear them all and getting frustrated that I can't hear and I can't adjust anything to fix it. Some songs have been fine and others are disappointing because of this.
