Saw them in Boston two years ago. It was nice hearing all the old songs, but not the same anymore.

Love the Pumpkins, but it all kinda boils down to how I feel that day. I live about 45 minutes from the Ft lauderdale show,...so maybe!

Who is even playing with Billy these days?

I am/was a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. But after seeing them at Mohegan Sun on Nov 16, 2008, I don't think I will go back and see them live again.
Billy is just too self-centered and only cares about playing what he wants to play even if the fans dont recognize what he is playing/singing.
Billy even made mention of it during the Mohegan Sun show.
After a couple of slow and uninteresting songs (A Song for a Son, SuperChrist, United States (12 min long), 99 Floors and Otawa), he said, "I'm sure you are wondering what the hell's going on up here. We share your sentiment" and then went into a slow version of Landslide. Ummm....can we get some rockin tunes, please? This is a 20th Anniversary show. How about a couple of songs we know.
I am a huge fan and have 90% of their music including imports and boxsets, so I am familiar with a great portion of their catalog. Unfortunately, hardly anything good was played.
Eventually they played Today, Cherub Rock and Zero and played them at 2x speed. I guess they wanted to burn right through em and get back to the lousy cover songs (Sound of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel - REALLY???, Little Red Riding Hood - Sam the Sham cover, and the encore was Pink Floyd's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" which I normallylove) But it was 20 minutes long of just rotten noise. Seriously, I couldnt take it and left 7-8 min into the song.
Billy got booed by his fans and he didnt look like he cared.

So, I guess, if you are expecting a great live show (ala Pearl Jam), you wont get even close if you see the Pumpkins. You might even regret it. I know I did.

Its also worth mentioning that I was given the two tickets from an old college friend and nobody wanted to go with me to the show. Not even for a free ticket. My roommates, my sister, my girlfriend at the time, nobody. Needless to say I was melancholy, and there was infinite sadness on their face when I told them I was going alone.

    Sounds pretty weak.
However...I feel that if Pearl Jam were to do something like that it would be called the stuff of legend around here. A little credit needs to be given to Billy for not just throwing out a greatest hits set and cashing the obvious check. You can't really blame the dude for being an artist and wanting to play other music than 1979 and Zero. From what i've seen he's been playing new songs "every night" with completely different setlists.
I'm presonally on the fence. I'd rather see some hits as well. But...i actually saw them on the Melancholy tour and they did the same thing. I only knew a small handful of songs despite being fluent in their catalog.
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

Saw them in 2008 and it kicked fucking ass in my book. They played a few hits, Bullet, Today, Tonight, Tonight, but left out the others. Only complaint was that Pink Floyd cover was a bit too long. Still a great show. I'm sad Jimmy's no longer around, but, i'd give the new lineup a chance. Billy is not the first person to ever change a lineup/band members, and i'm sure he won't be the last.

I live about 15 minutes away from their local show.

...without Jimmy Chamberlain, it's just Billy whining. :?

Unfortunately, I would probably turn down a free tick to the "Smashing Pumpkins" at this point. Billy Corgan has completely lost it.
  • I just got the new limited box set in the mail today. No way they are coming to Winnipeg, but I'd jump at the chance to see them if they did. I go there to see a performance, not some cookie-cutter greatest hits set. I'd welcome a bizarre setlist.

Also, after seeing the setlist , any time you get Soma, Mayonaise and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness in a night thats pretty rad in my book.

I don't have a problem with the bizarre setlist, it's just the fact that Billy Corgan is such an asshole. I wasn't there, but when they played the 20th anniversary shows in Chicago, he was yelling at and berating the audience when they became a little restless to hear some hits.

Saw them in '96...Billy was a dick to the crowd.

14 years later, it doesn't sound like much has changed.

Would do anything to have been on that tour, technically just because Billy is a dick you can't deny they are a great band anyway.

If you talk down to the people who paid money to see you, you can't expect to hold on to an audience.

Great band? Yeah, there are good songs, but Billy's attitude is a blemish on his art.

i saw them when they did that mini-tour 3 years ago, tickets were only $20, not sure what they were after the album came out.

i don't really care for their new stuff but fuck, billy corgan can play a guitar! he's really tall, too. i'm not the biggest fan of the way he sings but like i said, he is a great guitarist. he played a bunch of led zeppelin riffs in between songs when i saw them

Saw them on that first reunion tour when they did 3 nights at the Orpheum. I went to all 3, got to hear a nice mix of songs, and they sounded fantastic. Didn't get a chance to catch the subsequent anniversary tour...I remember checking out the setlists and thinking that they didn't play anything I felt I missed the first time around. Depending on $, I'd probably see them if they came around the Northeast again.

I've seen many SP setlists over recent years and wondered why he wants to bore the shit out of everybody. BUT, I just looked at the setlist from the show you saw and you actually got way more than most I've seen lately. You got Soma and Mayonaise amongst several other oldies/goodies. I paid a lot to see them at a club on the Machina tour and the cowd was BEGGING for Soma, he even once asked for requests and there was an instant Soma! Soma! chant and he blew it off and played heavy metal machine. He truly couldn't care less. Being a PJ fan has taught me to stick with a great artist even when they fall off the radar into relative obscurity because they are still able to produce great music, but I'm sorry, Corgan's most recent efforts have all been pretty weak*.

*Except Tarantula and Doomsday Clock. This proves that Billy can still do it he just choses not to. A la Adore.

I just dont think Corgan is into it anymore, He was pretty much forced to reform the Pumpkins because people did not care about his other music

haha- thanks Brisk. Yeah, I've thought about that. New band, new album. If I'm in south Florida around the day of the show, and if tickets aren't too expensive, I'll probably check them out
