A failure to properly address this issue (and even more specifically the Overstaying Visa issue) for many many years for political gain has resulted in a level of frustration where people are no longer looking for real solutions and just reacting. I find myself thinking that was sometimes and try to reel it in when I do.
The biggest problem with the immigration issue is this: each of the 2 main political parties are looking at these people as votes, not as people.
The reality is, with the global economy, immigration can be a boost to an individuals economy. You add consumers (so long as there is enough opportunity for them to become consumers instead of living off the government). You add talent. You add diversity which challenges your companies to meet the needs of the new consumer base. And by understanding and meeting those needs you gain an advantage over companies that are not serving a diverse base and haven't learned those lessons. Lots of reasons why it can be good. But the process is broken and it needs fixed. And yes that involves border and port security. It involves tracking individuals that overstay their visas and removing them from the country if need be. It involves changing the laws and processes to reduce the red tape to becoming a citizen and streamlining the process for those that follow the legal way moving forward.
The REAL immigration problem is not at the southern or northern border. It's at the airports. Where Europeans, for the most part, fly in on student and other visas and overstay their welcome.

I also say this because a bit back I was convinced that maybe we should just open up the borders but that is not the way to go about this.
I would say they never go back for the hearing because most asylum claims are bogus and rejected. I know in Canada economics asylum seekers are denied their claim...
As far as I'm concerned they should use the front door. If they are in the country illegally and if they get arrested, then they knew the risk. They know they are breaking law, and many know how to game the system.
