Who knows. Seems like they just wanted the name and the hispanic connection. Fielder would make more sense from a baseball perspective.

    Who knows? Cubs?

i think the rangers would be in the running for fielder - they gotta do something to keep up with the angels ... also depends on how the darvish thing plays out ... i suspect some teams are waiting for that chip to fall ...

Alonso to the Pads; Latos to the Reds

EDIT: 12:34pm: The Reds have announced on their official Twitter feed that they've acquired Latos for Alonso, Volquez, Yasmani Grandal, and Brad Boxberger.

That's a steal for San Diego.

I like latos a lot, but that's a nice haul for the pads

So they are saying today that the winning bid is above dice k. Is is possible the yanks are bushitting and went all out? I can't see the jays or the other teams rumored investing that much in a player. Not getting my hopes up but perhaps they are full of shit

Just to add, the rumors out there are that the yanks had a last minute meetin and decided to submit a modest bid. That does not sound a little bit like the yanks.

Alright, im starting to get my hopes up

Apparently the Jays ownership said spend whatever they needed to get him. Doesn't seem like the smartest move after dropping half a billion purchasing the MLSE though.

I think it makes a ton of sense for the jays to go after darvish. they put darvish and romero at the top of their rotation and they could make a run at what should be a wide open division

It makes sense, but it seems like they're pissing money away if the rumors about the bid are true. Forty to fifty million isn't too bad, but people are saying it's ridiculously high and in my mind that means sixty to seventy.

wasn't really going out on a limb. Almost $52 mill for the right to negotiate is nuts. Gotta figure texas will get it done to counter the angels moves. darvish, feliz, holland, lewis is a pretty nice rotation.

    the AL is absolutely loaded

edit: darvish will be announced on tuesday

if you don't care about payroll - you should be happy ... i think his maturity is going to be more of an issue vs. his arm ... he may be a bit of a narcissist considering how he's been treated in japan all this time ... that would be my concern - talent is all there for sure ...

On the one hand, I am thrilled. If they sign him that is. But on the other hand, I am worried about it blowing up in their faces.

Payroll not an issue anymore thanks to the ginormous TV deal.

I've read about some maturity issues but hopefully the Rangers can address that. They have had a history with problem players that weren't such an issue here, Milton Bradley for example. We'll see I guess. Wow.
