$30 million a year for a pitcher is absurd. the risk-reward is way too high on the risk side. every pitcher gets hurt eventually. it's bad business no matter how much money your franchise might have in my opinion.
No injury history, best pitcher in baseball BY FAR and all you are on the hook for is his EXACT prime. Nothing more.
approximately $1 million dollars per start and $10,000 per PITCH if he makes every start for those 1st 5 years. that's a big investment for a guy who is only plays once out of every 5th day. can you commit almost 10% of your salaries to a guy who only plays once every 5th day no matter how good he is? I know he is an absolute stud but I think it's way too big of an investment.
Kershaw missing at least his 1st start. those numbers per start are now going up.
these deals are getting out of control. why the fuck would you give Cabrera at 30 (at least) years old 10 years even when he has 2 more left. why would you possibly sign him with 2 years left on the current deal? makes no sense at his age or his body style to sign him this early and give him another 10 years. makes zero sense to do it at this time.

Umpires Used Instant Replay To Check The Count And I Wanted To Die
It took exactly four days for me to do a complete 180° on MLB's new replay review system. It happened when umpires lost track of the count in the ninth inning of last night's Yankees-Astros game, and spent more than three minutes using replay to count balls and strikes. I went from let's use technology to make sure we get every call correct to oh my god, I don't even care if they blow this call, I just want this game to end so I can go to sleep.
It happened on a 3-1 count to Yangervis "True Yankee" Solarte. MLB.com explains:
"I asked the umpire, 'What's the count?'" [Astros catcher Carlos] Corporan said. "And he said, 'I don't know, I've got 2-1.' I said, 'I've got 2-1 as well.' I kind of forgot about the pitchout that we made. [Solarte] was like, 'No, it's 3-1,' and [the umpire] said, 'Of course you're going to think it's 3-1.' They wanted to make sure, so they took a little time."
I do not know why the other umpires on the field didn't know the count, or why the video boards weren't trusted, or why Solarte, Corporan, and pitcher Brad Peacock couldn't between them recount the four pitches so far, or why home plate ump Brian Knight's little ball-strike clicky thing wasn't working. All I know is I hated baseball in that moment.
Both managers praised the umpiring crew for its meticulousness (though Bo Porter admitted the Astros dugout knew it was 3-1), so I'm just being cranky here. But ball-strike counts being reviewable could have practical repercussions: CBS Sports' Mike Axisa points out that this review was initiated only after prodding from Corporan, and a more devious manager could always use something like this as a way to buy time for a reliever to warm up.
Mets minor league team is hosting “Seinfeld night”

Apr 16, 2014, 11:19 AM EDT 27 Comments Keith Hernandez Jerry Seinfeld
Jerry Seinfeld is a big Mets fan, so he’ll probably love this.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Seinfeld” starting on NBC the Mets’ Single-A affiliate, the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League, are hosting a “Seinfeld Night” at the ballpark on July 5.
Darren Rovell of ESPN.com reports that the first 2,500 fans will get a Keith Hernandez bobblehead depicting him from the “Magic Loogie” episode of the show. Some other details of the festivities, via Rovell:
During the game, the team will become Vandelay Industries Park, named for the latex company George Costanza tells the unemployment office he might work for. The Cyclones say that anyone who can present a legitimate business card that shows they are a latex salesman will get in for free.
Thanks to Newman, mailmen in uniform will throw out the first pitch. Fans will have a chance to take part in an eating contest featuring cereal, Jerry’s favorite food, and there will be a dancing contest where fans will try to dance just like Elaine. To commemorate one of Jerry’s most awkward moments, the Cyclones will wear puffy shirts during batting practice.
I’m sure it’ll be super cheesy, but as a huge “Seinfeld” fan I can’t imagine the whole night not being really fun.
Some other possibilities that the Cyclones are free to use/steal:
- Every time a hitter on either team gets to first base they have to wear a Keith Hernandez mustache on the bases.
- Roundtable discussion of whether Jay Buhner-for-Ken Phelps was a good trade or not.
- Any player who follows in Paul O’Neill’s footsteps by hitting two home runs* for a sick child wins a free black-and-white cookie for everyone in the crowd.
- George Constanza look-a-like giving hitting tips to the players during pregame batting practice.
- And of course anyone with a baby named “Seven” gets in for free.
Congrats to Poop Holes...but shame on MLB for having a series pitting 2 of baseballs best players on the field together for the first time (not to mention Pujols on the brink of 500) and not putting it on national tv.
At least we get Yankees/Red Sox though...for the ten millionth time.
This sport still doesn't know how to market it's star players.
