Is it a prerequisite of being sane that you must think The Beatles are all conquering, untouchable heroes?
Are they immune from criticism?
Their music doesn't speak to me because..it just doesn't and there's nothing that will change that. Just like other bands. I don't feel connection with any of the songs, lyrics, melodies, nothing. Doubtless, because it's The Beatles, some would suggest I am dead on the inside or something. Well, fuck it, I've gotten along just fine up to now - guess I'll be ok.
for me, their importance is self evident. selling a billion records is something that will never be done again for obvious reasons but the beatles did it. their importance is pretty much engrained in the fabric of our country and the world. To me the Beatles are as American as apple pie and fireworks on 4th of july. i can understand how some people may not like them, but the people who fail to recognize their beyond astronomical importance to music, art, culture, politics, fashion, etc... that i dont understand and will never understand that type of person.
There are some performers and artists, dylan, elvis, the beatles, who as I said, their importance is almost difficult to even imagine and overstate. they exist on another planet but their influence is seen everyday.

any band with the legacy of the beatles IS untouchable. no matter if you or whoever disagrees that just stone cold fact.

if you are refering to my post, i was talking about that idiot that suggested ed was a better songwriter than the beatles, or john and paul and that if anything john and paul should be jealous of ed's skills. that to me is insane. Its so insane I have spent two posts too many discussing it, when it deserves to be ignored.

Yeah, that idiot would be me. I'm not looking for an argument or anything and I respect your point of view. I just wanted to put forward the point that The Beatles don't work for everyone, however crazy that may sound to some people. If I feel real emotional connection with lyrics on a Pearl Jam album, but nothing from a Beatles album that doesn't make me some kind of monster, it's just one of those things.
So, because of that, it does make the lyrics better. For me. I'm not saying that Ed's, or anyone else's for that matter, lyrics are the best ever, without question because that's nonsense - it's back to the old argument that there is no greatest band/songwriter/vocalist/whatever, it's whatever appeals to the individual.
To me the Beatles are as American as apple pie and fireworks on 4th of july.
I never thought the Beatles were 'exciting'. There was much more exciting music around in those days. I can't deny their influence on musicians, etc. but I don't believe it was more than some other bands/musicians.
The Beatles were about as American as a pan of scouse and terraced houses!
... although to be fair although Americans say American as apple pie I'm pretty sure apple pie had been around for a couple hundred years before it reached the US ... so why not claim fireworks and The Beatles too :P
So I guess yes The Beatles are as American as apple pie and fireworks ... not American at all
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?
Ed is an incredible lyricist but you are certifiable if you think his lyrics are up to par with Paul or John. .
The quality of lyrics depends on the opinion of reader/listener of the lyrics.
My personal opinion is that Vedder's lyrics are much more deep, meaningful, creative, unique, soulfelt, heartfelt, well-articulated, precise, profound, emotional, mature, and light years further-reaching than Paul/John's.
Beatles lyrics, in my opinion are--as a whole-- much more generic, bubblegumish, boyfriend/girlfriendish. More superficial. ("I dig a Pony" stands out as an exception) Don't get me wrong--I love beatles music and have all their CDs, including outtakes, etc.
However, as far as lyrical depth, I stand knee-buckling and shaking in front of Vedder.
If that classifies me as "certifiable", then funny farm here I come, I'm going where I do belong!
Actually, it was the cute bubblegum, simple-rhyming syle of the Beatles that DID make them so appealing. Hysterical teenage girls were their biggest fans.
This is not "criticism". It's just how it was. Their songs were cute and they rhymed and they were appealingly simple and likeable.
Paul more or less stayed on that bubblegum side. ("That would be something" stands out as an exception) "Say, say, say" is one of countless examples of v e r y g e n e r i c lyrics.
John's lyrics held much more meaning, and we were certainly ripped off (12/8/80) of thirty years of his genius. But even though John's songs had better lyrical content, the "depth" of his lyrics still only whisped and whirred around the collosal columns erected in Veddarville.
"Popularity" or even "legacy" has nothing to do with it.
If "most popular" always meant "the best", that means the best music out there would necessarily only be found in the top 40 top of the charts or whatever.
Believing that "best" means "most popular"--now THAT'S certifiable beliefs and behavior!
Ed is an incredible lyricist but you are certifiable if you think his lyrics are up to par with Paul or John.
Sigh. Once again, George gets dissed.

I love the Beatles. I have listened to all their albums countless times over and I have always thought that A Hard Days Night is the best album. It might be poppy and generic, but to me it is my favorite.
Following that I would put:
Magical Mystery Tour
Sgt. Peppers
Rubber Soul
Abbey Road
White Album
Revolver
Please Please Me
Help
With The Beatles
Let it Be
Beatles For Sale
Yellow Submarine

I just listened to previews of each song on each album off their official website.
Nothing excites me, maybe 4-5 songs.
Lyrics aren't my thing.
how old are you? Have you really never heard their music before? If I have kids, they will be taught the biblical scripture according to john paul george and ringo.

that's the last thing John would have wanted John not believe in Jesus, bibles, etc.
my kids know the words to I Am The Walrus... my life is therefore complete.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
The Beatles never did much for me, apart from The White Album. I always preferred the Stones.
Yeah..I'm the same way.
But, I'll add Abbey Road, and Let It Be along with The White Album. Those three albums are the shit.

You do realise that, no matter how hard you try and no matter how many insults you throw at people, you're not going to change anyone's opinion that differs from yours just because you say so?
I do not and will never like The Beatles music. Tried it, hated it. It's not a personal slur on their fans or the band. And there are thousands upon thousands of others who feel the same, just as there are thousands who don't like Pearl Jam. I love Pearl Jam but I'm not suggesting that others who don't are stupid, insane or without emotion. It's their personal opinion. I really don't have a problem with this.
Really, you should try to do the same. Who knows, you may actually like it!

I'm gonna agree with this guy. I love the Beatles, but some people don't, and that's fine. One of my best friends has great taste in music, but we don't necessarily like the same thing (she hates Pearl Jam and any sort of hard rock, I don't care for a lot of her music), but we both respect each other's taste! It works!

I seem to remember watching a documentary which mentioned that Jimi was a big Beatles fan and when Sgt Pepper was released he made it his mission to learn the title track as he had a gig a few days later and wanted to open with it.
Think some of The Beatles were in the audience at the show ... but Jimi didn't know

I love the Beatles and my kids do too. The music is timeless.
I'm 45 and in the 70s and 80s I wanted nothing to do with that soft crap. Tried getting into them and did enjoy the White Album. About 10 years ago I did some work for my aunt who is a huge Beatles fan. I had her burn me copies of everything. After a few listens I was hooked. How could I let this great music escape me all those years?
Now I too preach the Beatles. I play them at work regularly to keep exposing the 20somethings to thier greatness. Any musician I've met enjoys the Beatles. Customers always comment on how good thier songs are.
Popularity certainly does count towards greatness. Along with longevity. Most artists you find on the Top 40 charts will not be around in 2-3 years but the exceptions that truly are great will still be top sellers 40 years from now.
Pearl Jam doesn't even approach this. They are more of a cult band. And did someone actually say Ed's lyrics are more articulate? Half the time it sounds like he's singing with a mouth full of crackers.
It was actually me that said Eddie's lyrics are better than The Beatles, but I was referring to the fact that the lyrics Eddie has written have an emotional impact on me, their songs move me in a way that no other band has.
I can't connect to anything The Beatles have written. It just doesn't do anything for me.
Again, this is just a personal viewpoint. I don't expect everyone to agree with it.
