That's a very good post. I understand where you are coming from. But the government forcing me to buy insurance is not a good thing. It's like if you owned a small corner store in New Jersey and the government forced you to pay the mafia for protection instead of providing police. Instead of supplying a single payer option the goverment has got into bed with the insurance companies(mafia ;) ).

The problem is when you try to provide coverage for everyone... and not everyone pays into it. This happened in some of the states tried it. People weren't forced to participate and spent their money elsewhere, thinking they'll never get sick. Then, they get something that requires expensive care and want to get into the plan.
You can't say, "Sorry... you haven't been paying... you must die." They get care... because everyone else paid for them. Think of driving for years without auto insurance... then, getting in an accident and applying for insurance to pay for the costs after the fact. Doesn't work that way.

The problem isn't so much the government... it's the people. If everyone was willing to pay for insurance, there wouldn't be the need to make it law. Just like you cannot just ask that people buy auto insurance... it has to be a law. Wearing a seat belt is the smart thing to do... but, because of people, there has to be a law. Common sense should tell you that is is not smart to text your Tweeter account while driving... but, it has to be a law. If everyone did what thy should do... there would not be the need for laws to tell them to.
Case in point... there are laws on some books that makes it illegal to have sex with a horse!!! Really. There are some people that need to be told, "Don't fuck a horse".
    ...
And i agree... the bill needed a Public Option so that little store in New Jersey could go to the police, instead of the Mafia. Blame goes to the political partisanship that is spliting our country in two. But, at least it's a start.

because health insurance companies are in it to make a profit, i'd rather pay to have health care

to some it's all about having their turn as king of the hill. it seems like a lot of politics is taking to someone, not with them. it's about me being right because if you disagree you are assigned some label so your opinions can be brushed aside.there are a lot of politicians that don't seem to have any ideas other than screaming 'NOOOO!' and throwing tantrums. politics has become such a joke watching a party defend an action when they are in power then quickly denounce it as 1 of the worst things in history when they are not. it's not about progress and the betterment of society, it's about keeping power, making money and helping out campaign investors

look at how barney frank reacted to that lady about the nazi type health care. obviously her concept of what the bill was wasn't inline with reality but the way he reacted to her will more than likely only strengthen that idea and thinking 'he didn't want to respond with facts so he just attacked me to shut me up!' and gave the right something to bicker about and say 'see, they don't like the public, they just make fun of you!' i wonder what would've happened if he actually tried to find out why she thought that and told her how she was wrong calmly instead of acting like a prick?

Very well put. People don't realize that this is the insurance for the working man. The guy who gets laid off from his factory job. The reason why so many people stick with shitty jobs is because of the Health Insurance. Now they can have a choice and can switch jobs if they are not happy or if the boss is an asshole and not worry about being insured. This will also help the creative people in the world who just want to be a full time writer or painter and will have the ability ro purchase affordable insurance.

    My point is...

Money is Money no matter how it's spent. I was trying to point out the irony in the conservative "No more spending" argument. Wars are OK, but government run programs in any form are blasphemy.

$900+ Billion on endless wars started by a conservative administration.

you guys are so funny with your silly analogies

the only one that makes sense is Cosmo

did some really compare the health care mandate to the paying the mafia for protection

but in reality the mandate was added for purely economics it is the only way to keep cost down healthy people need to be forced to pay into as cosmo said how much do think car insurance would cost if didn't have to buy and only got it you wanted it

The only difference between Obama and Bush is skin color. Wars continued? Check. Patriot Act? Check? Massive spending? Check. Bending over the taxpayers? Check. Lobbyist abuses? Check.

    Same old. Same old.

I understand the mandate for economic reasons. I also understand the mandate for entrenching the insurance company reasons. I think this part of the bill will make it take longer for single payer or a public option to be enacted.

Call me crazy, but I think after the way the insurance companies have raped and pilaged the citizens in the U.S., the last thing I would want to do is reward them with more clients.

For the love of god anyone who thinks George Bush was conservative must have been in a coma while he was President. I'm sure there are many nuthuggers in the teaparty movement who feel he was a great President. Myself, speaking as a conservative, he was an abysmal excuse for a President.

Seriously. You think for a single moment that just because insurance companies are now going to have even more clients than they did before, that somehow costs are going to go down?

The other funny part of all this is, which many people fail to address, for years Republicans have been accused of being in the back pocket of big corporations, especially insurance companies. These accusations are justified in most cases. However, here we have what has to be the biggest windfall the insurance industry has ever seen with mandated coverage, and not a single Republican supported it.

so it would have gotten more Republican votes if it had a public option

i still fail to see viable alternatives from Republicans even as they talk about repealing it

The Income Tax pays for public services!?!?

Oh my dear, you are naive. Looks like you've been listening to Mass Media's interpretation of history.
