You can go back and listen to the forerunners of heavy rock and Zeppelin, Cream, Sabbath, etc still sound good and valuable...the early rap sounds so amateur it hurts.
The first rap I ever listened to was Eminem, you just can't go back to that hokey stuff when you start with such master work.Monkey Driven, Call this Living?0 -

It doesn't mean they weren't "good and valuable" and ahead of their time, but as compared to some of the metal we've got in the last few decades, they were hokey AF.
It's evolution, baby.
EDIT: it also doesn't help that Eminem was the first rap you listened to. If you grew up on this stuff & saw the evolution you may have a different perspective.

Best purchase I've made this year and luckily right before what's going down right now.

The Beastie Boys album Pauls Boutique is an absolute masterpiece.& yeah, PB is a masterpiece, but I can say love Check Your Head just as much. Both are insane & really ahead of their time.0 -
Sabbath is hokey. Harmonica in songs. Not in my metal. Pioneers? Yes. Zeppelin started metal. Sabbath started the use of dark imagery in songs. The Beastie Boys were always ahead of their time. They were just so far above. I agree with guy who says early rap sounds dated but the Beastie Boys have stood the test of time. And passed with all A’s.Peace,Love and Pearl Jam.0

Sabbath is awesome. C'mon, Paranoid is pure awesomeness.

I believe Rhymin & Stealin had a Tommy guitar riff to connect the worlds of Sabbath and BBoys. The love he receives is the love that is saved0 -

Also, War Pigs... Snow Blind (off the top of my head)... thinking about those songs was why I pulled back on the term hokey... nothing hokey about those tunes.

Yep - I actually meant the album, not just the tune. That album is a Top 10 for me. (As is Paul's Boutique)
