Being Canadian, I am ashamed at the way this has been allowed to continue for all these years, without at least finding a more humane way to do it if it does in fact 'need' to be done, as people claim. It reminds me of The Cove, where 'tradition's' are getting in the way of compassion and humane treatment of animals. I agree that the senseless slaughtering of any animal in any country is wrong and needs to be corrected.
Some people just love to kill. It's in their blood. These people frighten me, because killing animals with such disregard means that it wouldn't be much of a stretch to kill people the same way.

Most regions here in Canada allow hunting and have strict rules and quotas about how many deer you can hunt or turkeys or whatever and it is a means of conservation. If you don't control the animal population you won't eat. when deer population gets to large they move into farmers fields, destroy their crops, etc.. Sorry you may not like hunting, but tough, here in Canada it's a way of life for many people. In the States it's even bigger. As for the seal hunt, same thing it's been a way of life for generations. The world needs to get over.

How does deer being pushed out of their homes affect their population? Do they hump more in farmer's fields or what? I always thought their populations explode because of a lack of natural predators (yes, that is most likely the fault of humans).....but isn't the point of a cull to put humans in the role of natural predator?
For the record, I am 110% against trophy hunting, poaching, and any other form of recreational killing...I think the seal hunt, if soley for their pelts, is unecessary....
Habitat loss typically leads to REDUCED animal populations, not population explosions. A lack of big predators (cougars, wolves) is the main problem where deer are concerned.

Incorrect....the deer population is increasing due to the lack of an alpha predator that preys on them....there is no longer an eastern U.S. wolf or cougar population (outside of the seriously limited in range and number Florida Panther)....the deer population is getting more noticeable due to human encroachment on their habitat.....Science wins again!!!
