Canada's Shameful Side: 388,000 Baby Seals To Be Slaughtered

edited May 2010 in A Moving Train
I was in 5th grade when I first saw this horrific sight.

We were in class and the film was about baby seals.

I remember seeing that first pick enter the head of a helpless baby seal.

I had to leave the room. This was 1973ish....

I've grown up.

These fuckers are still doing it.

So why is Canada killing seals?

"The seal slaughter exists because of the overall demand for fur. During Canada's annual war on seals, sealers routinely hook live seals in the eye, cheek, or mouth to avoid damaging the fur, then they drag the seals across the ice. Many of these gentle creatures may not even have eaten their first solid meal or taken their first swim before they are slaughtered for their skin.

In 2009, the European Union voted to end the sale of seal products, and the U.S. Senate unanimously passed U.S. Senate Resolution 84, calling for an immediate end to the annual seal slaughter. It's time for Canada to wake up! And with the help of caring people like you, we can put an end to the slaughter once and for all."

Do you have the guts to watch the video and speak out the people in charge of this slaughter or will you go onto the next post, not caring about what you don't see?

Please help. Tell them to stop by following the link.

Thank you.

How is it any more shameful then shooting a deer to kill it, or slaughtering a cow, or catching a fish by sticking a sharp hook in its mouth and then bashing it in the head?

Its not, really. Baby seals are cute, so people have a huge problem with it. The seal hunt in this country is sustainable, and it is partly carried out by Aboriginal people who have been hunting seals for centuries. It is part of their livelihood and cultural tradition. I'd feel differently if seals were endangered (like the "not cute" bluefin tuna, that the Japanese insist on eating into extinction). They are not, quite the contrary. Seal populations are similar to those of deer, in that they require some regulation if population explosions are to be avoided.

yeah ... the visuals are horrible but from what i know these animals are not on any endangered species list and the meat is actually eaten ...

having said that if the US and EU have signed bans ... where is the market for this fur?

Remaining markets for seal pelts include Greenland, Russia, and China. Norway and Germany used to be big markets as well. Most of the meat not consumed domestically goes to Asia (China and Korea).

Does the EU even have any grounds to stand on when it comes to being outraged about this? I mean in the UK fox hunting still takes place, and in Spain they still do Bullfighting. Both of those so called "sports" are way more cruel than seal hunting, and on top of that they are viewed as sports, where as at least people hunting seals do it for food and to make money. Fox hunting is just a bunch of rich dudes riding around on horses watching their dogs kill foxes.

well ... hypocrisy is a funny thing ... really, it shouldn't matter what some other countries do ... the questions Canadians need to ask is whether or not we consider this cull in line with our social make up ... for me it really comes down to how much suffering these pups are enduring ... and i say this as someone who typically buys naturally raised/organic meats not only for health but with the understanding that the slaughter process is more humane ...
  • Being Canadian, I am ashamed at the way this has been allowed to continue for all these years, without at least finding a more humane way to do it if it does in fact 'need' to be done, as people claim. It reminds me of The Cove, where 'tradition's' are getting in the way of compassion and humane treatment of animals. I agree that the senseless slaughtering of any animal in any country is wrong and needs to be corrected.

Some people just love to kill. It's in their blood. These people frighten me, because killing animals with such disregard means that it wouldn't be much of a stretch to kill people the same way.

I understand the emotional reactions that this stuff sparks ... I think some of this depends on one's own experiences. I grew up in the bush, basically. I used to hunt a lot. I know how to use a knife and the notion of using animals as a sustainable natural resource does not bother me in the slightest, although I do feel that killing things to the point of extinction is not harvesting nature, its raping nature.

I can also understand how someone could watch these videos and get pretty upset. The people who oppose the seal hunt are coming from a place I can empathize with. I just feel that its important to emphasize that the seal hunt in Canada is regulated, and that most seal hunters kill in so-called humane ways that do not differ all that much from methods used in slaughterhouses, on pigs and cattle. If you oppose killing animals for food or fur period, alright, you'll have a problem with the seal hunt as well. But seal hunting not a special example of barbarism.

That's good. 8-) I was going to call you on that. I'll add one thing, though. Most of the non-Native hunters do it for a living as well. This isn't "Sadists on Ice". Given how controversial the hunt is, the Canadian government watches sealers like a hawk. They even have to club animals in circumscribed ways that deactivate an animal's nervous system so that pain is minimized. I've hunted (not seals!) with Natives and non-Natives, and there's the odd cowboy asshole in both groups. Generally, though, people act decent.

The surprising thing is that many biologists would tell you that the population is probably still too large....despite a hunting culture, the deer population here in Alabama is still beyond the capacity of the land to properly support it. The other thing that most surprise most people is that the White-tailed Deer was near extinction-level at the turn of the 20th century....state-regulated hunting is partly responsible for the population rebound.

Agreed, and I would personaly much rather hunt humans than animals. If any species needs a good culling... and besides, soylent green is delicious. People are just far too big of pussies to have predators in their midst naturally controlling animal populations.

Exactly. You'd think in this day and age that they could have found a humane way to kill these animals rather than smashing their skulls with an ice-pick. But then some people here would get a kick out of it. And they're no different to dear, right? They're just animals, or objects to some people.

Clearly, leather and beef aren't good enough for some people.

Fifth grade? yikes. why would they show that to kids? I mean...did they show you video from all kinds of slaughterhouses, or did they just pick this particular industry? Was this curriculum related or a teacher bringing his own stuff into a classroom?

See....I have to wonder why the Seal hunt gets so much more press than any other kind of cull or big hunt the world over.... If it bleeds it leads, right? This makes great tv....blood shows well on those cute lil water-puppies, and all that snow n ice around them....
comparatively....the seal hunt doesn't deserve to be an annual debate dominating airwaves. I see more about the plight of the seals from mainstream sources than say...the plight of uh....say.....africa?
