Then you have the environmentalist getting pissed whenever anyone wants to cut down a tree and build a factory. Too some existent I agree because then big corp. does not always clean up its waste. They get chummy with the powers that be (city councils, mayors etc.) and they get away with polluting our Rivers. So it’s all a catch 22 situation. Now the tech jobs and hiring foreigners, illegal or not is just plan greed.
I know some dry wall guys that can’t find work because the Mexicans are undercutting the Americans...The American Nail Tech. is almost non existent because the Asians came over and undercut the business. These two trades were outsourced in there own country.
to echo your post, 2 of my best friends are commercial drywall finishers. one left the business and enrolled in college 2 semesters ago because there was no work and his employer laid him off then folded. the other guy has been "loaned" to several other employers because his employer can not find him work. he and his wife lost their home and filed bankruptcy last year. its not that mexicans are undercutting americans, its that NOBODY, no companies are building buildings anymore...around my home, new home construction has stopped altogether. there are several subdivisions filled with half built houses that have been like that for about 2 years. blame the economy and the corporations, not the mexicans...

Sure but here in Florida they are still building, not like they were but they are still building,,,,if anyone is doing any drywall it's the Mexicans,,,,,the city is putting in new sewer system in my neighborhood you know who the laborers are Porto Ricans (non speak english) not one American and the crew is large oh yeah the foreman is American....I have nothing against Mexicans or any other race...I am just stating facts

Yeah because those factory workers drive Benzes, BMWs, and live in huge castles surrounded by moats with man eating big fish.
There is no guarantee in this country that everyone will drive a BMW or live in a castle. Everyone deserves to make a living, but there will always be those who barely eek one out.
I admit I haven't read the thread. But, speaking as a disgruntled Dell customer, I have this to say: While everyone's languages are equally valid, it does not make sense to have someone who primarily speaks one language attemtp to provide customer service to someone who speaks another language.

Would it be worth paying a higher price for a Dell in exchange for assurance that you will always speak to someone with whom you share a primary language?
I would pay that, but usually when I have computer issues, I call up the small business computer shop that I bought the machine from.

I remember in my international business class we had a discussion about outsourcing. Outsourcing has drastically reduced the price of goods, in the early 1900's the average pair of dress shoes ran a cost (adjusted for inflation) of about $300 bucks.
This is why so many people usually had 1 pair of shoes, maybe 3 workshirts, and one business suit
And having a casual wardrobe, a business wardrobe, and an athletic wardrobe was non existant. Casual wear consisted of boxers and a wifebeater.

No, but it would be worth paying more for a computer that works.

Of course these savings are rarely passed on to the consumer. Under Armour products for example used to be all made in the USA, now good luck finding one. I'm fairly certain their prices have risen, this is just one example.

It's a small example of this, but as you know, a lot of it is name. Godin (a Canadian guitar company) makes guitars in the United States and Canada, some selling as low as $500 new. Meanwhile, an American Fender (a famous company) will cost you twice as much! Now, there is a quality difference, but a lot of that is name recognition.

That die has been cast already. We shipped our manufacturing overseas a decade ago so we could get 'Always the Lowest Prices, Always'.
You can boycott things made in China... which means you will probably only be buying Big Macs, methamphetamines, prostitutes or all-weather missile guidence systems for you and your family. And please, that stuff I hear about Apple computers and iPods being made here... some of them are ASSEMBLED here for the U.S. market. The components? Made in China. Hell... even those 'I Support Our Troops' magnets and banners... where do you think they are made?
And can you blame anyone? You can blame everyone. Everyone want to make money... and everyone wants to save money. That is the market, doing what the market does best. Which makes me laugh when I hear those 'let the Market work' folks exclaim about Health Care Provider Insurance companies... but cry that 'Something needs to be done' when the Vice-Grip factory is shipped to China.
...
I was angry from 2001 to 2005 when most of those jobs were being shipped off. I'm not angry anymore. The Chinese worker does a pretty good job (much better than the 'Hecho En Mexico' imports). I've moved on since that die was cast a long time ago.

agreed with the poster above, things change, and we're currently in a global economy. Everyone will eventually get shit on and everyone will eventually get their time at the top. It all depend on how well you can adapt to change.
Computer, internet, and tech innovators were once dirty hippie sci-fi geeks barely earning a living while manufacturing jobs in the U.S. were king. And before that Fur and Tobacco industries were king, and before that Agriculture wass king.

You would rather have another factory, rather than a forest? Why do we need new factories... when there is nothing to make?
And don't lay blame on 'the foriegners'. If your friend really wants to work, he can be competative and lower his wages because that is what the market has done to his skillset.
You know who's to blame? Everyone. From the CEOs looking to increase their stock price, to the executives who use the numbers supplied by the accountants on cutting cost, to the soccer mom consumer who want to pay the least and get the most. Blame the general contractor who wants to keep building costs dow as well as the American homeowner who wants his home to cost as little as possible.

Besides, the economy (especially agriculture) depends on illegals. If they weren't working at a low wage, food prices would go up, and people would bitch about that.

I've read a study somewhere that said your food prices would go up $8 a year. I'll pay mine and yours. Happy?

$8 a year as in annual/yearly, not per item.

Fair question. And my answer is.... it's all relative... and complicated. Since I don't really believe that moving tech suppor to India decreased the cost of my computer, I don't think moving it back should increase the cost. Also, given the high price I paid for the damn thing, I expect 1) a computer that works, and 2) good customer service already. And of course there are factors beyond the language barrier that influence my anger about their customer service. Considering that Dell's poor customer service has cost them my future business, perhaps they should be asking themselves if it would be worth paying a higher price for local customer service in order to keep their customers.
Of course, I'm ready to make the move to Apple in large part due to their good customer service. People say they're more expensive, so you might say that means I'm willing to pay more for good customer service. But their computers really don't cost any more than my computer from Dell did.

The market will bear what the market will bear. Cost ain't got as much to do with it. Corporations outsource overseas to make more profit or because they have to in order to compete with the other companies that did. Retail pricing is primarily determined by what consumers can and will pay irrespective of cost. Now if the market will not pay enough to cover your costs, then you go out of business, but that is a different discussion.

go apple buddy you won't regret
I have been working on the same one since 2002 and still runs albeit a bit slow now and I have had to update and clear out the hard drive a few times.... this year I will finally get a new one
and don't worry about customer services, the last time you will see them is when you walk out the doer cause you wont have any problems with the machine, buy the apple care and they will replace if you do
I'm on my phone right now because I'm in between moves. I'm sure googling it will show something. I don't have the link saved.
I would like to see your list of American manufacturers I am always trying to buy USA but it is getting harder
plus you have the financial means to buy the more expensive stuff which a lot of Americans do not, they have a tight budget and have to get the cheaper clothes, furniture or what not

a big reason your industry is doing good is because they rely so heavily on taxpayer money, subsidies, 30 year loan guarantees for 70-100% of their cost (because no one else is willing to put up the money), tax breaks....i wonder how well the industry would do if it was forced to compete in an actual free market?
don't compete; coexist

Don't blame the foreigners ? Obviously you don't know jack shit about the constuction trade. So a contractor is suppose to lower his prices to compete with abunch of illegals ? For what ? So he can go into more debt and lay off his workers, and then what loose his business ? Oh I know I know these are jobs that Americans wont do right ?
You have no idea how many contractors have stories like these. And the funny thing is most of the homowners that hire illegals to work for them usually end up regretting it, because a lot of them don't know what the hell they are doing and don't even have ins.
. I have nothing against someone coming here and wanting to make a better life for themselves and their families but get in line and do it the right way.

As far as I know my company has not received anything other then possibly some property tax breaks. However they still built cities that are near them, huge fire depts, streets, schools, etc. They also donate quite heavily to local organizations.
But IIRC the initial build costs were funded by the company, I will try to confirm that. Those start up costs are what is preventing them from having any new construction plans. They are funding uprates throughout the fleet that would create the capacity that is equivalent of one new reactor without having to get the license.

That's true I can do that, but I'm stubborn enough to do it anyway.
I usually just Google Made in the USA ******** whatever, or if I'm interested in something I will contact the manufacturer to find out where it is made. I won't buy without some answer. I used to not worry about things like underwear and whatever but I feel the companies that are keeping their work here helps Americans and it is worth the little bit extra, if it is any. That really is a myth and here is my example. I build Jeeps for fun in my spare time for personal use then sell them. My nuts/bolts/washers/fasteners I will only buy Grade 8 and Made in USA. I simply don't trust Chinese metal when my life is on the line attached to a winch. I recently for fun priced a larger order to replenish my stock, and did a foreign pricing compared to a USA pricing. The USA ended up being cheaper.
I only buy Snap-On tools (although some parts like branded Vise-Grips are made in China), workboots made in the USA, NB gym shoes, all my personal products are made here, I only buy produce from this country, socks, nice jeans. etc. I WILL NOT shop at Wal-Mart.
I'll admit I do end up buying some higher line things like clothes made in Italy, beer from Germany, etc. I however avoid Mexican and Chinese goods like the plague. I will not put car parts made in either of those two countries on any vehicle that I own.
I do admittedly own an iPhone "assembled" in China. I'm not happy that Apple does that, but I think computers are almost like cars with as many parts that they have, they come from everywhere. Some things cannot be avoided, I just try to do my best.
So as I mentioned I contact companies that move production overseas or to Mexico to tell them that they lost me as a customer; I also will contact those that continue to manufacture in this country and thank them for doing so.

Yeah he could lower his wage but unlike some cultures Americans are not used to 12 to 20 people living in one house hold. Which is what these other people are forced to do because they are not getting paid a living wage....
Environmentalists have to take part of the blame. It’s a simple fact ......People don't want to buy items from China, yet they don’t want more manufacturing in America.

Remember that there are many sides to everything. Why do corporations move jobs around the globe? A lot of it probably has to do with the wages they have to pay. But who is willing to work for those lower wages? And why are they willing to do so? If those people are willing to work for lower wages, then they likely need the jobs worse than those who are unwilling to accept that pay level.
The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.

I have been working on the same one since 2002 and still runs albeit a bit slow now and I have had to update and clear out the hard drive a few times.... this year I will finally get a new one
and don't worry about customer services, the last time you will see them is when you walk out the doer cause you wont have any problems with the machine, buy the apple care and they will replace if you do
I would like to see your list of American manufacturers I am always trying to buy USA but it is getting harder
plus you have the financial means to buy the more expensive stuff which a lot of Americans do not, they have a tight budget and have to get the cheaper clothes, furniture or what not
in many ways I am like others and stopped fight that battle and adapted to the global economy.... I am more conscious now about where my food comes from than where my underwear comes from
a big reason your industry is doing good is because they rely so heavily on taxpayer money, subsidies, 30 year loan guarantees for 70-100% of their cost (because no one else is willing to put up the money), tax breaks....i wonder how well the industry would do if it was forced to compete in an actual free market?
what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

Environmentalists have to take part of the blame. It’s a simple fact ......People don't want to buy items from China, yet they don’t want more manufacturing in America.
I'm fucking agreeing with you My statement had nothing to do with being patriotic....I was just stating facts. But if you wanna go there I will......... If I stand up for any country, it WILL be MY OWN country....how about you? Freedom is Fucking great, don’t you think?
