The Who is actually doing this for free. Somehow, the highly-commercialized worlds of rock 'n roll and the Super Bowl are coming together, and someone has ended up doing something for free. The NFL covers all expenses for The Who, but they will receive no actual fee for playing. They don't even have a new album to promote, either. Strange. <<<<<< btw i stole this from my homepage.

Watched the concert, "Live from Kilburn" 1977. If you get a chance, well worth seeing.

I think they are touring in 2010 as well so this will give them a lot of attention.

I just saw on T.V. that the 1/2 time performers can expect a 555% increase in sales of the songs they perform. The may not add up to much but it is a nice bump.

Well considering that The Who have been complete whores for money over the last 15 years, they probably are aware that "Led Zeppelin" sold out stadiums and "Page & Plant" only sold out arenas.

  • What's the over-under that they will play
    all 3 CSI-related tunes:
1st, Baba O'Riley, 1 of the most familiar openings, + it'll get everyone psyched.
2nd, Who are you; longest track, pretty rockin'.
3rd, Won't get Fooled Again; the theme song to CSI- that's right- MIAMI!

I hasten to add, however, that it's brilliant they are waiving their fee.
Let's hope the money goes somewhere it's needed.
    Cheers.

Same with the Alice in Chains approach. They are no way Alice in Chains without Layne Stanley.

  • I think there's certain "levels" to this sort of thing.

"The Principals are still in place" bands

The Who - No disrespect meant to guys like Keith Moon and John Entwistle...but bassists and drummers are replaceable. As long as Roger is screaming and Pete is doing his windmills, they're The Who.

Kiss - Lead guitarists are harder to replace...but when the band wears make-up, it's hard to really notice. As long as they have Stanley and Simmons, they are Kiss.

The Rolling Stones - I'm getting ahead of myself here, but the day will come where Jagger and Richards are the only ones left and they will still be called The Rolling Stones (as they should).

    "We're not fooling anybody" bands

Van Halen - Calling this band "Van Halen" with Sammy Hagar on vocals is silly because the band's music totally changed.

Black Sabbath - At least they finally came around to calling themselves "Heaven and Hell" when they perform with Dio. Unlike Van Hagar, Sabbath with Dio doesn't suck.....but it's not Black Sabbath.

"We tried to fool people....but the joke is on us" bands

Pink Floyd - I've always felt that Gilmour and Co. continuing to tour without Waters was fine. But calling anything on A Momentary Lapse of Reason or Division Bell a "Pink Floyd Song" is a farce.

Alice In Chains - How would you like it if Eddie Vedder died and the band carried on with Scott Weiland on vocals?

Guns N Roses - "Tubby McGoo and five guys who aren't Slash" as Conan O'Brien would say.

Major replacements that are okay with me

Iron Maiden - Bruce Dickinson replacing Paul Di'Anno

Metallica - Kirk Hammett replacing Dave Mustaine

    Pearl Jam - drummers

I have a feeling the Who are going to treat us to a mash up of Baba O'Riley, Pinball Wizard, Tommy, Who Are You, and Won't Get Fooled Again.

Well the band pretty much got their setlist already leaked out:

The band leaked their planned setlist, which includes the songs: "Baba O'Riley", "Pinball Wizard", "Tommy, Can You Hear Me?", "Who Are You", and "Won't Get Fooled Again"

I'd be depressed and feel a great deal of sympathy for his family.
and the band carried on with Scott Weiland on vocals

    Pearl Jam - drummers

I don't think Pearl Jam actually had a steady drummer until Matt Cameron, they were basically one record ( or 2 for Dave A.) and out.

Jack played on two albums, and on three tours (Vitalogy, No Code, and Yield) 1994-1998
Dave A played on two albums and two tours (Ten, and Vs) 1991-1994.

Could be slightly off, as I'm rattling that off of the top of my head.

Jack did MWR, Hawaii & the Australian tour for '98. The huge remaining of the Yield tour went to Matt.

Imagine someday, imagine forgiveness/forget happens and Dave A comes back & play's with Pearl Jam?

i disagree with a couple things....

usually a bass player and/or drummer can be replaced and it won't make a difference for the most part, but the who had one of the best in each of those categories. i still think they sound good live but to think that john or keith was replaced by anyone near their caliber is kinda ridiculous...

...and i think layne not being in aic and bon scott not being in ac/dc are the only two examples where a lead singer could be replaced. i think that since jerry and malcom/angus wrote a majority of the music over their collective bodies of work justifies this...and the guys that replaced them do them justice; especially live.

    ...vedder would never be replaced.
