for the first time in a while - there are 10 nominees for best picture

“Avatar” James Cameron and Jon Landau, Producers
“The Blind Side” Nominees to be determined
“District 9” Peter Jackson and Carolynne Cunningham, Producers
“An Education” Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey, Producers
“The Hurt Locker” Nominees to be determined
“Inglourious Basterds” Lawrence Bender, Producer
“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness, Producers
“A Serious Man” Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, Producers
“Up” Jonas Rivera, Producer
“Up in the Air” Daniel Dubiecki, Ivan Reitman and Jason Reitman, Producers

see full list of nominees here ... http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawa ... inees.html

**************
i think the 10 nominees is to allow for films that previously wouldn't get best picture consideration - i think WALL-E last year was a film that was on many critics top 5 and should have gotten a nomination but it wasn't traditional best picture fare ... so, this is their solution to that ...

anyways - a wide selection will split many votes i think ... i'm guessing the hurt locker and avatar are front runners ...

yeah, UP IN THE AIR was really good.

I'm looking forward to the Academy Awards.
Every year AMC theaters has a movie marathon showing all 5 "picture of the year" nominee's. It's a long day, like 13 hours but well worth it (if you can sit that long). It's like $30 and you get a bottomless popcorn and drink (in the past anyway). There is break time between each movie to eat and stuff and they even do trivia for silly prizes. I was really looking forward to doing it again this year but not sure if they're going to do it being there are 10 movies nominated??? Hmmmmmmmmmm.

wow that a lot of movie- I could not do that

I have a cool memory though of being in LA a few years back for the awards. Hanging around outside and the endless limos coming and coming and coming as far as you could see. It was very cool 8-) I stood on a street corner and waved at the blackened windows ;) its like a different world they live in.

the movie marathon sounds like such a cool thing!
i do believe our local AMC/regal cinemas does the same. my only fear is it being PACKED, i hate being stuffed into a packed theatre.

    agreed.
i mean really, how many decent pictures come out in a year?

i haven't been my usual movie-going self this past year. loads of DVDs, not that much time/$$$ spent in theatres. i've seen 5 of the 10 (only 2 of which seen in the theatre), and all the rest on my netflix queue awaiting their DVD release. :) i DID really want to see a serious man in the theatre, but i was holding out for it to play at our fave theatre...and it never did. :|

    *realized i saw 5. :D

    up
    up in the air
    inglorious basterds
    the hurt locker
    district 9

I saw Avatar, Blind Side, District 9, Hurt Locker, Inglourious Besterds, & Up in the Air

Hurt Locker and Up in the Air seemed like the best of those listed. If I had to rate them i would go as follows:

    Up in the Air
    Hurt Locker

    Inglourious Besterds
    Avatar
    District 9
    Blind Side

Biggest snub for me was Viggo Mortenson not being nominated for best actor for his role in "The Road".

    Charlotte 03
    Asheville 04
    Atlanta 12
    Greenville 16, Columbia 16
    Seattle 18
    Nashville 22
    Ohana Festival 24 x2
  • and avatar will take like 10 awards

I just read that James Cameron and his ex-wife ( not sure of her name, but she directed the hurt locker) are both up for best director...that is crazy!

Hurt Locker was so full of shit...just so many holes in it.

District 9? really? the movie was so predictable and the acting so lifeless. zero character development. but hey, it's suppose to be about racism and since we have a half black president...why not give it a vote.

I thought it was a really weak year for movies. None of them really stood out.

I saw more than half of them and I'd say that Inglorious Bastards might have been my favorite followed by UP or The Blind Side.

    Here are some other thoughts:

Avatar was absolutely amazing from a visual standpoint. The story and "acting" was not good.

District 9 just had way too many holes in it and kind of fell apart.

Hurt Locker was amazingly intense and well acted, but there wasn't much of a story....if any.

yeah, i was surprised to see that there as well. Not a terrible movie, but nothing great at all.

I'm pretty sure it was nominated in the "cartoon" category.

Just saw this for the first time the other night (theatre was jammed too ????) and I think that Avatar should share any awards other than it's effects awards with the Dances With Wolves team. It didn't even pretend to stray from that story at all. Can't wait for the sequel. Heard that Cameron is planning on copying the story from Gangs of New York -- should be epic in 3D.

I'll be rooting for "UP" !
    "squirrel!" "squirrel!" :D
  • interesting to see if they will choose anything but hurt locker because of all the negative press it has received in the last few weeks.

beyond that, the best acting in a movie, all year, was precious. the acting in that was flawless.

as far as my favorite movie, my best picture of the year, out of the list, would be up. pixar keeps on making these unreal movies. what a great movie.

in general, my two favorite films of the year: away we go and where the wild things are

i keep saying it, but i am a massive fan of tarantino. i wanted to love inglorious, but it just didnt hit me, and i am a big fan of brad pitt as well, so the cards were in my favor here.

additionally, based, on the opening sequence of inglorious alone, yeah you are probably right, the guy does deserve an oscar. flawless scene. the one where the nazi guy goes to the guys house. wow. i know it wasnt a horror flick, but i hate modern horror films because of the lack of suspense. scaring people is an art. too often our generation's films just show blood and gore and dead bodies. horror film directors would be wise to study the opening scene for this reason alone. it is perfect in the suspense department. that is how you do suspense.
