I also got a little over 7k in bonuses a year until this past year. Now I am taking all the side jobs I can get while our small company treads water. I would consider myself middle class.
Two of my cousins are loaded though.

Not wealthy, but definitely middle class. Both wife and I work and are comfortable, we are able to save for retirement, take a couple trips a years, attend concerts and sporting event and do plenty of of other stuff. We know what it's like to scrimp and save for things we want.I have certain rules I live by ... My First Rule ... I don't believe anything the government tells me ... George Carlin

I'm pretty sure g under p is male.
Is he? "Grace under pressure?" Oh, sorry!
Everyone assumes I'm a man named Travis. I am neither.
Of course I cannnot tell if G under P is wealthy/upperclass from his or her Christmas bonus. I was judging from my perspective. I live high on the hog for a full 7 months on ten thousand dollars."May you live in interesting times."0 -

also, he is not a lawyer, but works in in-home healthcare.
and, as someone already pointed out, a 10,000 bonus does NOT make someone wealthy/upper class, not at all. it's quite a big assumption to think so based only on that information. tho now your comments seem more in-line with that whereas your first post did not. and hell, there are lawyers who are not wealthy. i know a few. haha.
i'm not really sure of the purpose of this thread, but yea...i am certainly neither.we do well and have a comfortable life, but solidly middle-class. my parents were well-off, entirely of their own doing, but again....certainly not wealthy. my father-in-law would probably be considered wealthy now, but he certainly doesn't live it. i have spent a decent amount of time in the hamptons, but yea...i live on long island, so it's not too difficult to do.and as also pointed out earlier, all of these prerequisites that apparently signal being wealthy/upperclass, in reality, do not really make that a certainty, at all. also, one's income level in relation to where they live play a BIG part in if they fit within that descriptor or not. to be wealthy in NY is quite a feat, even tho incomes may seem quite high in comparison to other areas.
i live in an area with a LOT of wealth, i think just recently i read that within the top 50 richest small towns, at least 20 are located on long island. i don't live in any of em tho.haha. that said, i have worked/taught within these very wealthy communities and the majority of the extremely wealthy, well most...you'd never know. most are extremely discreet, polite, generous and good-natured. it is the neuveau-riche that are the most conspicuous about their wealth.

People work very hard for their wealth but usually don't get the admiration they deserve just envy.
People somehow assume it was easy. My husband has worked so hard to get what we have. He has worked his life away with no retirement in sight not really by choice. I remember this when I hear of the very wealthy even those who inherited because someone along the line worked hard, made good choices and was probably frugal for their families.0 -

Bingo.
Firmly in the middle. Wife and I both work. Have a decent house and a couple of kids. Save for retirement, but still have to scrimp and save if I want something discretionary. Get to see Pearl Jam a couple of times a year and take a vacation. Nothing too fancy.

I make $70k per year. I think that puts me at about the 80th percentile. But we have negative cash flow because of past debt (mostly my wife's).
It looks like my wife is leaving me though (see other thread) which will actually make me fairly wealthy again. Even if she takes my house, car, and half of my 401k and $800 per month in child support... I will be much better off financially by this time next year.
Maybe the divorce will be a blessing in disguise. A single guy living in a $500 per month efficiency, no car payments, no other debt except for child support and his college fund. and right there with ya. actually we are probably 'better off' financially b/c we don't have children. life would probably be a LOT tighter if we had kiddies. we'd still be ok, but definitely not have the same discretionary income. life is all trade-offs. either way tho, i overall feel VERY fortunate. besides, rich in love.
honestly, every single one of us here...typing away on a message board, are amongst the "wealthy" in the world, overall. sobering perspective. we all should be thankful we are so well-off and fortunate.Stay with me...

Oh, yeah. From the world's perspective, if you have a computer a few minutes to type a message on a board, you are wealthy. Great point.DAL-7/5/98,10/17/00,6/9/03,11/15/13

Jeez, people, any of us could have been living in Haiti a few weeks ago. I'm unemployed but we are incredibly wealthy compared to most of the people living there."The stars are all connected to the brain."0 -

absolutely.
it's all what you choose to focus on. sometimes it's difficult to stay focused on how fortunate you are, but yea....we ARE. and hey, don't even have to live in an area just hard-hit by a natural disaster....can just live in a 3rd world nation with little access, if at all, to so much of the 'wealth' we ALL have and often take for granted.Stay with me...

But to join in the fun, my wife and I are middle class... We both work, have a son, a house, two cars, can go out to eat and stuff, but we have to save for any big purchases/vacations, etc.
We don't need for anything, so I guess in relative terms to the rest of the world, that makes us quite wealthy. My whole life

Going to those schools do not make you wealthy/upper class.
I went to an Ivy League school (U Penn) and my dad was a school teacher (retired now) and my mom was a bank teller (retired.)- Busted down the pretext
