Filmmaker Who Broke ACORN Story Arrested For Attempted Bugging Of Landrieu's Office

James O'Keefe, the conservative filmmaker who was behind the undercover operations that lead to the ACORN scandal last year, has been arrested with three others for allegedly trying to bug the New Orleans office of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), the Times-Picayune is reporting.

From the paper:

FBI Special Agent Steven Rayes alleges that O'Keefe aided and abetted two others, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan, who dressed up as employees of a telephone company and attempted to interfere with the office's telephone system.

...

A witness from Landrieu's staff said O'Keefe was present in the office and claimed to be "waiting for someone to arrive."

The fourth person is Stan Dai, accused of aiding Basel and Flanagan. The AP is reporting that Flanagan is the son of acting U.S. Attorney Bill Flanagan in Shreveport.

The ACORN stings that made O'Keefe's name were posted on Andrew Breitbart's Big Government Web site. Reached by TPM this afternoon, Breitbart said: "I need to find information on this. I'm out of the loop on this. I will make my determination then on when to comment."

Said Landrieu spokesman Aaron Saunders: "Because the details of yesterday's incident are part of an ongoing investigation by federal authorities, our office cannot comment at this time."

Politico has posted the FBI affidavit in the case here (.pdf).

Umm, didn't the government wiretap all of our phones? And if you read the story it says nothing about wiretapping, they just tried to make it sound that way, he was trying to record them on a cell phone. Not saying it was right, but what the hell is going on in this country when people get busted trying to get the truth you people are happy about it. Must protect Obama I guess.

I figured there would be in some way you were going to bring Obama into this, there is no need but you always seem to want to do just. Very foolish idea, what was done here is ILLEGAL therefore his arrest nothing more.

I would have no problem with this IF he had planned on taping, bugging, wiretapping a Republican running for office and IF I can recall they can be just as corrupt as any other party. However, we know there's no way in hell he was going to do just that , RIGHT, right!

    From the article:
Each man was wearing blue denim pants, a blue work, shirt, a light fluorescent green vest, a tool belt, and carrying white, construction-style hard hat, when they allegedly asked a staffer to show them to the telephone closet.

that sounds like "he was trying to record them on a cell phone"... you need to get to the telephone closet for that?

Bottom line these guys are idiots who got caught trying to do something clearly illegal. I guess you can justify it with some sort of unrelated anti-Obama comment if you want.

I know it was illegal and I know they should have been arrested. I just think it's funny how all the "Obama Protectors" get all happy and giddy about it. These two did a very good thing by busting certain ACORN agencies and some people are still pissed off about it.

I don't even know why they would attempt such a thing...I mean...with all this transparency, why would we need wiretapping?:lol:

they went about this the wrong way... so many other ways to tap a phone line, you don't need to touch a physical line to do it(I worked as an engineer at a phone company for just over 12 years).

That said, dumb ass got caught.

I do applaud him on his ACORN story though.

You're really being foolish here and it's laughable. YES Bush started wiretapping and Obama has continued it and I don't like the fact that BOTH administration are wrong on this point, so what. Unplug your G-string man.

Who are you ALL the "Obama Protectors?" I hope you are NOT refering to me because if you watch closely on this board I'm critical of Obama, IF i disagree with something, anything he porposes I feel is wrong or will not work. I for one am not giddy over some idiotic group doing something illegal. I'm pretty sure though you were probably giddy as you say, when the Republican Brown won in my home state of Massachusetts. Get your facts straight and get off your assumption bandwagon please.

An odd thing here I watched Fox News with the Shepperd Smith fellow and I did NOT here a word mentioned about this on his show. Waitng now to see if Bill O'Reilly will mention it...... "Fair and Balanced" I'm sure though if those people had come up with something on tape, it's fair and balanced to say they would've surely mentioned it.

Chris Matthews on the other on MSNBC had a piece on the subject with interviews.

What this piece all boils down to is that these two people busted the Obama sponsored affiliate called ACORN and you're all pissed off about it so much that when they do something like this your all worked up. How come nobody fucking cared when they showed what ACORN was really like? How come Chris Matthews didn't give a shit about that but he cares about this? Shows how fucking one-sided suck ass MSNBC really is. By the way, there ratings are like 1/8 of Fox's ratings. I don't watch Fox, figured i'd point that out because to all of you it's going to look like I am sticking up for them, just stating the facts. Don't you see how fucking stupid this is? These two people were on your(our) side when they brought down ACORN, why does that bother you people? And I know it does or else you wouldn't all be gloating about this. But whatever...if your all about corrupt government and you want to protect that then......that's how you roll I guess.

Why is this always about ratings, I don't give a shit about that. I just wanted to see if they were going to mention it and so far to the end of Bill O'Rielly they didn't. Remember they're supposed to be *Fair and Balanced, RIGHT!

I'm not sure what truth you're looking for but the fact is Fox News hasn't mentioned it and atleast MSNBC has and don't give a shit it if the Iatollah was the host. Fox News...NO MSNBC.....Yes that's all man!

Yes, but the real point is that MSNBC will cover this but they wouldn't cover the first scandal.....and you call that fair and balanced. Oh wait, I think they did cover the first scandal......they said they should arrest them(the two making the tape). Liberals have everything backwards.....arrest the two that uncovered the corruption, give terorists rights, arrest the marines that gave the bad guy a fat lip......IT"S A FUCKING JOKE!!!!

what the fuck are you even talking about?

No one here that I've seen is pissed off that these idiots help bust ACORN, and I watch Chris Matthew's show about once a week and I saw several pieces on that story.

Why make this partisan? these idiots tried to somehow wiretap a senator and got caught and look like idiots... i don't care if they did it to Landrieu or Tom Coburn.

you've got some issues man... just cuz you didn't see something covered, doesn't mean it didn't happen. And I'm assuming you are talking about the idiot editorial shows... Maddow and Olberman are partisan hacks just like Hannity and whoever else Fox has that will ignore this part of the story.

Talk about being a spin monkey... somehow you try to turn this thread into an anti-obama, anti-msnbc, partisan thread instead of just leaving it about the idiots that got caught.

Look I don't really watch either station they're both the same just opposite points of view for the side they want to project. At Least MSNBC doesn't try to come off as if it's trying to be fair and balanced to all, it ain't. Are you saying Chris Matthews and others on that station didn't address that ACORN, as far as I can remember they broadcast, interview and showed the story like most other stations?

I find it odd though that Fox news clearly failed to mention this story since just several months ago they had these guys as lauded heroes for what they brought out about ACORN. Now he's arrested for doing something illegal and no mention of it, *fair and balanced* I think not. Even you would object if this matter was reversed, even you.
