John Mayer on Pearl Jam's fame
"It's so interesting how success hits people and how they react to it. I remember reading Pearl Jam saying that after Ten, "I wish we hadn't gotten this big." I read that, and I go, "Well, then give it back. Someone else will use it." The idea that phenomenal success is something to wish away... I don't understand it. I hope I sell 100 billion trillion copies of whatever I put out, but if you're that guy, then next time out, don't write a hit song."

I do know he is a HUGE Pearl Jam fan and that makes him ok in my book. I don't know him personally so I can't be a personality judge.
he might be tolerable if he was a guitar player in a band rather than a solo act. Just play guitar and shut up.
he may be a douche
but the boy can play
Now, the photos of him a while back in a "Borat"-style bathing suit were pretty damn funny.
Get some fresh air people.
Guys that he half assedly apes are amazing. ie Clapton and SRV
The guy gets popular with a guitar strapped on and jams with a few legends and that makes him a great guitarist?
Get some fresh air people.
thanks but I don't need fresh air. He talks way to much about everything. I isn't just his PJ comment, but he has to talk and talk about everything.

Seems a bit harsh. Some people are uncomfortable with fame, or at different periods of their life aren't ready for it. I like to play drums. Been playing for about 25 years, and I'm pretty good at it. Was in maybe 4 or 5 bands in high school. But I don't like to play live... but I still like to create music. I guess I'm thinking about an artist who is very shy, but brilliant. I think there's room for them too.

Why??
The interview would be pretty dull if he didn't respond to the questions.
It is not just interviews, the guy NEVER shuts up.
not really.
i think one can be a a huge fan of the music, but still question the comments of band members. he's saying he doesn't understand the mentality of it, also seems like he just doesn't *get* it. i guess there are many people out there who would not get it. seems he handles his career and his private life in a VERY different way than pearl jam (vast understatement ) so really, it's unsurprising he doesn't get it. he is an extremely talented musician tho, no doubt....all the rest, well honestly...just don't give a shit. however, i do see what he's saying. i don't agree with it, but i understand his pov. many, many musicians can only wish for the kind of huge success pearl jam had/has...right outta the gate.
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow
kind of like our favorite front man? it's ok for eddie to ramble about everything because you like him?
john mayer owns people on guitar. that's a fact. look it up.
Fair enough.
Of course, he's coming from a place where he was writing more-or-less pop music which was a gradual incline to his success. PJ was writing more troubling music, and suddenly, boom - they are the biggest band on the planet... plus the differing personalities. So, I suppose I see how he is looking at it from a different angle.
