It squeaks? Really? What exactly is squeaking? The mashed potato?

When you press the stuff down in the frying pan, it makes this sort of squeeky noise - difficult to describe.

What does the name mean? "Bubble" and "Squeak"....makes no sense to me?

its what it does when its cooking.. it bubbles away and if you listen closely it will squeak

What other veges do people use in it besides potato and cabbage?

As red said the squeak tends to be when it is pressed down in the pan.

We usually make it with left overs from a Sunday roast so will be potatoes and either cabbage or brussel sprouts plus anything from carrots, peas, leeks, broccoli ... whatever! As I'm veggie I usually have cheese and pickles with it ... the others usually have ham, gammon or bacon
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?
  • I think Bubble and Squeak, along with dumplings, is Satan's contribution to the gastronomic world.

It's gonna be a glorious day...

Also, that photo in the OP is missing a cup of coffee and some toast/bread. I really like the seeded loafs of bread you can get in the supermarket. It's great when you get 'em when they're still warm - fresh out of the oven. I like them with either butter by itself, or with marmalade. :)
