Faithful Lyrics
I love this song EXCEPT what the hell were our boys thinking with "Drowned you are,
you are, you are a furry thing And everything is you
Me you, you me, it's all related" ?
Anybody else think this sounds weird?
you are, you are a furry thing And everything is you
Me you, you me, it's all related" ?
Anybody else think this sounds weird?

I don't care what lyrics have been inserted into the booklet or how they appear on various lyrics sites. There is absolutely NO way its "a furry thing". It's an awesome play on words:
You are you are everything
and everything is you
There's no way the real lyrics are "furry thing". It makes no sense and would be ridiculously cheesy by PJ's standards, let alone any band's standards. I think "furry thing" was meant as a joke because of how Ed pronounces it. Kind of like "Breakerfall" = "Break Her Fall", etc.
If you take it as "You are everything and everything is you" the whole wordplay makes sense and no-one can convince me otherwise.
Sorry for the rant. It just really bugs me when people insist on the whole "furry thing" lyric.

I believe it is "ev-ery-thing"

With respect to your opinion, the line stays in context with the theme of the album and the sentiments reflected in Ishmael.
I absolutely agree that it could be a word play, but in this instance, I believe he says, "Furry Thing".
Cheers,

edit...as pissbottleman has referred to above
While I have heard that argument too, I still disagree. Just because Ishmael is about a gorilla, does not mean Faithful refers to a "furry thing". I can see themes in Ishmael that coincide with Yield. That I agree with, and Ed has mentioned that he was a big fan of the book around that time.

Belief in the game controls that keeps us in a box of fear
We never listen
Voice inside so drowned out
Drowned you are, you are, you are a furry thing
And everything is you
Me you, you me, it's all related
To me, this challenges the idea of faith. When you boil it all down, we are all one in the same...in the game scheme of life, it's all relative.

Ed was more than a "big fan."
He's suggested that the text of Ishmael could be the complete liner notes for "Yield."
I understand where you are coming from. There are examples of Ed intentionally writing the "wrong" lyrics in liner notes ("get out of my lucky face.")
The difference here is that, not only does Ed write "a furry thing" in the liner notes ... he sings "a furry thing" on the record. I mean, listen to it. He isn't singing "everything" there.
for the least they could possibly do
I still disagree
"e-ver-y-thing"

My wife and I were just talking about this the other day. I called her a furry thing.
Great ending lyrics to a great song IMO
I think it challenges the existence of a higher being in that bible is a myth (lie) and that people live their lives according to it and fear the wrath of "god" while our inner voice (nature) is muted by the fear of not following the bible - the furry thing (Ismael) advocates this...and of course how can man survive without gorilla - it's all related (it's evolution, baby!)
I also think there is a great deal of sarcasm in this song. It's not so much about believing in god...it's more Why do you believe in god when a lot of the "teachings" go against nature??
Faithful
Lyric in question:
furry thing
Answer:
It's about Man's best friend, his dog.
Just a guess
The song is a direct connection not to Ismeal but actually to Vonnegut's tome Galapagos.
During the making of Yield, Eddie said, in that year's ten club magazine, that he finally got to see Vonnegut read live.
Galapagos has to do with evolution from human to seal (and parting from religion in a sense).
cheers!

and we are mistaken, misguided, faithfully believing we are better than/other than furry things...
I took the lyric not to mean Ishmael the gorrilla, but the listener of the song
I am proud to be a furry thing (as well as everything)
I'm just not hearing it, on the studio version. If so, ed has REALLY gone out of his way to make "everything" sound like "furry thing" ... To me, if it says "furry thing" and it sounds like "furry thing," well ...
I could claim Ed is really singing "do the apple-lution," but just making is *sound* like "evolution." Doesn't make it true ...
What I will concede is this:
Ed has a history of writing lyrics that could be sung in different ways -- "violins" vs. "violence" in Daughter, "innocents" vs. "innocence" in I Am Mine.
That could be what he's doing here. But on the studio version of this song ... it sure sounds like "furry thing" to me ...
for the least they could possibly do
But who am I to say. I got into an argument with Ed here over his own lyrics to Unemployable.. See the Letterman Webcast. Speech right before Present Tense. I was one of a few who thought it was "scared of life". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwamCGQU7_s
me you, you me IT'S ALL RELATED
this is what I'm going with....note the capitalized portion, which, to me, explains the first line.

–adjective, fur·ri·er, fur·ri·est. 1. consisting of or resembling fur: a deep, furry rug in front of the fireplace; the furry undergrowth of the forest.
2. covered with fur; wearing fur: Many furry animals are in danger of becoming extinct.
3. obstructed or coated as if with fur: a furry voice; a furry tongue.
4. Slang. terrifying; hair-raising.
Just a guess, but it's probably a bad guess.
And Furries are those people who like to dress up as animals (mascots) and have sex with each other, right? Thank goodness the only mascot I ever had to be was a helicopter (but it was a furry thing)...

Ha, I've been going back and forth as I go through the thread probably 4 or 5 times. I always thought it was furry too for Ishmael. But now I have switched over. Any other arguments to convince me otherwise? This argument wins in 5..4..3..2..1...
