I grew up a fan of one college team and then went to their main rivals school. Obviously had to switch team allegiance. Was kind of split the first year but you don't bust your ass for four years and not root for your school and not want them to crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

i think you can be a 'fan' of a different team and keep total and absolute allegiance to your primary club. i was born a south sydney rabbitohs fan but became fond of the cronulla sharks back in the 70s when they lost a grand final against a hated team. ever since i have had a soft spot for those losers*... HOWEVER.. when they play the bunnies have no doubt, they are the enemy and the bigger the loss inflicted on them the better.

    * they finally won the GF last year after 50 seasons of trying. .

Had a guy who used to work for me that did that. He, however, would not pull for the school he attended for 4 years. I never understood that.

That's got to be tough but you did the right thing.

I went to a non d1 school where nobody gave a shit about the teams pretty much. So I've always rooted for the d1 school I grew up near (Nova). I do also root for Penn State for football though.

I'm not really a hockey fan but I grew up in Columbus, so I was originally "on" the blue jackets....when they went out, I got on the pens...now, they look like shit so I'm thinking oilers.

It all depends on the ferocity of your rooting.  If you are fully adopting the team and publicly boasting, and numerous 'look at me' posts on social media.... then it is lame.  If you are watching with a rooting interest for entertainment... it is fine.

For me, it always seems to come down to rooting against teams, especially in the NHL and NFL.

Loosely related...the phrase, "Act like you've been there before." Probably the worst cliche/sports phrase of all time, especially when used by fans, right? Yeah, I thought so.

I'd say "Good teams find a way to win" is the worst.  It's such a cop out.  Break the plays down, tell me why they worked. Tell me what both sides of the play are seeing? Tell me why it worked for one team and not the other. Give me the strategy, what each side is thinking in anticipation.  "Good teams find a way to win" is for dummies.

And mostly used by fans who couldn't throw a spiral if their life depended on it.
