I'm with Ed on this one.

I am shocked that so many people own a gun purely for the highly rare case that you might be threatened.

Instantly living in fear, and bingo - bad guys have already won.

  • I enjoy shooting for the fun of it too. Try to go to the range every month. I'm very careful and follow all protocols. Keep them locked in the safe at home 100% of the time. If you know what your doing, and check and double check and check again, shooting is a fun sport.

    Point 4:
Do think I would stand alone and if the government comes after me I have protection and if the government doesn't come after what have I lost? Also its protection against foreign invasion. In Switzerland every person gets to keep their gun so they can raise an army in a matter of hours.

Foreign invasion? What country do you live in? Because if it's the US, then the chances of foreign invasion are close to, if not completely zero. Who's going to invade - Canada? Mexico? Please. Switzerland is slap bang in the middle of a continent that has seen two world wars last century, and suffered from almost continuous warfare in the sixteenth, seventeeth and eighteenth centuries.

As for the government coming after you (unless you are a criminal), well, that's an equally ludicrous concept for Americans to consider. Another poster mentioned the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms as a form of protection against government. In 1791 (the year the 2nd amendment was adopted), the practicalities of a democratically elected government, ruling for the people on behalf of the people were still evolving. The US had broken from the general European trend of absolutist and monarchist government. Europe was also in the midst of the French Revolution - where one opppressive regime was replaced by another. The idea of protection from government was not outlandish, given that the US was a new country which had evolved from a general European tradition of governmental repression.

Secondly, militias (self-armed civilian forces) were vital for the protection of the population, given that the professionalisation of police forces was a long way off. That is not the case now.
When we found the things we loved,
They were crushed and dying in the dirt.
We tried to pick up the pieces,
And get away without getting hurt,
But they caught us at the state line,
And burned our cars in one last fight,
And left us running burned and blind,
    Chasing something in the night.
  • If I was a criminal, breaking into your house, I'd feel a hell of a lot safer knowing that you didn't have a gun.

But, as it is, if you break into MY house... Maybe I have a gun, maybe I don't... Give it a try and see how it goes.
  • I know it's a fictional film, but this is always what I think of when my friends expresses an interest in buying guns for protection.

I don't know why people have to see this is as such a black-and-white issue.

    How about a compromise?

Legal, law-abiding citizens with good mental health can own fire arms, but are subject to registration, background checks and tough penalties for misuse.

A ban is put in place for the purchase and sale of automatic weapons, large clips, sniper rifles and other items that are clearly meant to kill many people.

Each state can determine their own carry laws.

Oh, and these rules should be ENFORCED.

    well?

Not sure what's up with the gossipy threads that have been appearing recently but we're a music site and another read-through of the Posting Guidelines could help a few members to reaffirm what we're about. Again, the band's personal lives are private and speculation about someone else's life is just that, speculation...and gossip. Whether it's gossip about the band or each other...it isn't pretty and isn't ok here. Thanks for cooperating, luvs.
