I do think Jerry was the backbone of AIC. Layne gave them a chrismatic singer with an amazing voice and that propelled them to the next level.
I thought bogey depot had some good songs. I thought Degradation Trip was fantastic and jerry's best work since Dirt.
Jerry's solo stuff never did well because of a lot of reasons. Much if it having nothing to do with the music.
It is very cool if someone is not down with William being in AIC. That is your thing. I think you are missing out on some good new music and a chance to hear some old favorites live. That being said you are also not in my way when i'm getting tickets either so no big deal.

I honestly believe that Jerry made a conscious effort for his solo stuff to not sound like an AIC album. I'll never understand why artists will "save" stuff for certain projects, but it's kind of how Billy Corgan's solo album was utter horseshit but if he puts stuff under the name Smashing Pumpkins it's totally different.
I'm not saying Jerry's solo stuff was a huge departure, but my best defense is to simply listen to the new album. It sounds like AIC and it's because it was time for Jerry to realize that it was okay to move on and make another kickass album.
This is a fucken joke, oh and I'm also curious to know who wrote the lyrics to there songs, cuz I assumed it was Layne and those fucken lyrics moved me a hell of a lot more than jerrys guitar

Jerry wrote most of the songs and lyrics.
Wasn't there an interview that pointed out that it came to a point that jerry and layne were talking about how to sing the lyrics because layne was not quite getting the feeling Jerry wanted from the lyrics he wrote and layne said you should sing them yourself....
I seem to remember something like that and it is part of the reason why they do so much harmonizing in the music.
I might be "misremembering" that but i coudl swear i remember reading something like that about 16 years ago.

Ok all u AIC genious, if jerry was "the band" then I'm just curious to say why didn't ANY of jerrys solo albums turn out great. But I bet u guys will say his work was the shit. Whatever, this can go back and forth and hey everybody knows everything about music and they're all right and no ones wrong. All I'm pissed about is them calling themselves AIC, that's bullshit and all u fuckers know it. Come on already, how can u call ur self AIC when ur fucken original frontman died???? I loved AIC more than pj when they all came out and I'm fucken pissed that they would call themselves AIC and that people on this board actually tell me that they lstened to aic cuz of jerrys riffs and not that fucken mesmorizing voice of Layne... Give me a fucken break... Hey I got an idea, let's have Dave and Kris hire me as a singer cuz I really do sound like curt and we can break out the new nirvana!!!! I'd invite everyone on the board for the show, shit I even look a little like curt too so what the hell, bring all the bands back and we can have a go at it again.
While arguing your point, you made one for the other side. Jerry IS the creative force behind AIC, much like Cobain.
Nobody is tryin to take anything that Staley was away from him, he's just not as big a part of the AIC sound as you think.
I'm not a huge AIC guy, but touring as AIC, or other bands touring under the full band name when the singer dies does sound a bit unkosher. I'd love it if bands chose a twist their band name or music.
EG:
Grateful Dead = The Other Ones or The Dead
Alice In Chains = Alice's Chains or "AIC"
Pearl Jam (should it happen one day) = Jamming Pearl or something
It is odd seeing a band fronted by a completely different person than the original, but who is hired for their ability to sound like the original frontman. In the same way it's odd to see Journey touring as "Journey", even though their singer history was so unusual. They started with:
Steve Perry:
then egos got in the way, so they hired another singer who looks and sounds just like Steve... and his name also was Steve:
then Steve (the second one) was having some throat problems, so the band "eh... let's replace him too", and they did with Jeff Scott Soto:
the band then decided "what the fuck... lets get another singer"... and so they did. They scoured YouTube and hired Arnel Pineda
...also, in 2008, Journey re-recorded a number of their classic songs like "With Open Arms"... not for any musical changes, but to cut Steve Perry out from any royalties, having Pineda replace him on vocals - but recorded to sound identical.

Jerry wrote 8 out the 13 tracks on dirt, he wrote or co wrote 11 out of the 12 tracks on AIC self titled. Layne wrote one song (Head creeps), Jerry composed almost all the music. I dont want to criticize Layne to beef up Jerry. The fact you dont know who wrote the songs is testiment to the fact that your not that up on the music. If you were then you would have reached for your extensive collection and checked before hand.

You don't seem to be able to get past the point that bands continue on with the same name even though individual members may die or leave.
It allows them to tour AND GET AN AUDIENCE with the songs of that band.

I love the old AIC as much as the next person but is it really necessary to get this upset over a band name? Its just a name. As several people have said, if its that big of a deal to you, then don't listen to it. You'll be missing out on some great music but that's your choice.
As for the whole Jerry vs Layne thing, I agree with most that Jerry was the driving force behind the band but it was the combination of the two that made the band so special. Jerry was / is a mean creative force and Layne brought the voice and so much raw emotion,

On Facelift Layne only wrote lyrics on a few songs, one of them was "Man In The Box." That album was mostly Jerry musically/lyrically. On Dirt Layne wrote the music/lyrics for "Hate to Feel" and lyrics on around 5 tracks, but Jerry did a lot of it. Layne's lyrical input grew a lot on Jar of Flies and self-titled. He wrote lyrics on 4 of the 6 songs (not counting the instrumental) on Jar of Flies. On self-titled Layne sang all of his own lyrics, any song where Layne is on lead vocals he wrote the lyrics. Jerry wrote the radio songs though Grind, Heaven Beside You, and Over Now. I think if Layne had overcome his addictions and they'd made more albums he'd have become an even bigger part of the band creatively, probably 50/50 with Jerry, but that never got to happen unfortunately. Jerry was unquestionably a bigger creative force behind AIC than Layne, keep in mind Layne is my 2nd favorite singer of all time. I'd say Layne was a huge part of the band, but the band do have the right go on without him. I don't think they could have gone on without Jerry, no way. Jerry is the mastermind behind AIC. Layne was integral to the band though, if he was still with them they'd be able to headline festivals on their own and probably play bigger venues.
Layne is an amazing talent in his own right. Layne's lyrics/voice on the Mad Season record are stunning. I'm sure he would have had a mind blowingly amazing solo career had he not been a total recluse in the late 90's. It's a shame he didn't release any solo albums, I don't get why he didn't. Sometimes it angers me how he just totally wasted his talents. He had a home studio and literally just stayed home for 5 years, I wish he'd have recorded a record or two. So sad how he just wasted away and didn't use his talent at all during those years, outside of the two brilliant "Music Bank" songs he recorded with AIC in 1998.
I have see Alice in Chains twice this year and was blown away both times!
As the true fans have said Jerry is Alice in Chains, no question! He waited a long time to reform, has talked a lot to Layne's family, and really gone about it in the best way possible, why should he let the music die because Layne did?

The new singer cannot compare to Layne. The Staley/Cantrell harmony is undeniably the best in rock EVER. But with two original members and the third practically an original, the band has every right to carry on as AIC
and???they will stop making music?they will not try?william is not Layne..so what?...he is William ,a great artist, great on scene and needs respect..i prefer them like this than NO AIC at all

So he was part of Alice in Chains, wrote songs for Alice in Chains and performed songs with Alice in Chains.
I think your questioning of him using the band name falls a bit flat, in that respect.
